Over 30 million immigrants came to North America between 1800 and 1970 from around the world and for various reasons. Some key famous immigrants included Alexander Graham Bell who invented the telephone, Albert Einstein who developed the theory of relativity, actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, and Indian independence leader Mohandas Gandhi.

Alexander Graham Bell
• He was born in Scotland
His family immigrated to
Canada. He
experimented sound,
and later invented the
telephone in 1876. He
worked with the deaf
and blind, and he was
friends with Helen
Keller.
8. The greater inventor
Albert Einstein
• He was born in Germany, was a
jew, and left Germany when
Adolf Hitler came to power. He
was recognized as a genius for
his theories of relativity and
gravitation. He settled in New
Jersey, becoming a US citizen. He
heard that Germany was making
an atomic bomb. So he started
working to make the first atomic
bomb. Einstein worked for world
peace much of his life.
9. Actor Arnold
Schwarzenegger
• Arnold was born in Austria.
When he was a teenager he
trained to be a bodybuilder. At
the age of 20, Schwarzenegger
was the youngest ever to earn a
universal title. After immigrating
to the US in 1968, he earned a
college degree and pursued an
acting career. Schwarzenegger, in
2003, was elected governor of
California.

Madeline Albright
• Madeline came to US
when she was eleven
after her father a Czech
diplomat, was accused of
crimes against the state
by the new communist
government in
Czechoslovakia. In 1997
she became the first
woman to serve as
secretary of state.
11. World Peace keeper
Mohandas K Gandhi
• In 1893 Gandhi left his
naive India for South
Africa. He worked for a
Indian lawyer for a year
then came back home. In
fact he stayed for 31
years. Appalled by the
treatment of the white
South Africans, Gandhi
conceived and led a
campaign of
nonviolence.
