Mental Attitude: Link Between Facebook Use & Depressive Symptoms. The results of two new studies that included a total of 332
participants indicate a link between spending a lot of time on Facebook, comparing oneself to others, and depressed feelings. Study
leader Dr. Mai-Ly Steer explains, "This research and previous research indicates the act of socially comparing oneself to others is
related to long-term destructive emotions. Any benefit gained from making social comparisons is temporary and engaging in frequent
social comparison of any kind may be linked to lower well-being." Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology, April 2015
Health Alert: Gestational Diabetes Drug Can Raise Complication Risks for Baby. Infants born to mothers who were given the
medication glyburide to treat gestational diabetes during pregnancy have a higher risk of respiratory distress, the need for intensive
care, low blood pressure, being too large at birth, and birth injury when compared to infants born to gestational diabetic mothers
treated with insulin. These findings are concerning as the number of women who develop gestational diabetes in the United States has
more than doubled over the last 20 years. Lead researcher Dr. Michele Jonsson Funk comments, "Doctors and patients need to be
aware that although glyburide is easier to use than insulin, not all women may be good candidates for management with this
medication. We need to better understand which women can be treated effectively with glyburide, considering not only the short-term
but also the long-term effects that these treatments may have on the health of their newborns." JAMA Pediatrics, March 2015
Diet: Benefits of Omega-3 Fatty Acid Consumption During Pregnancy. After monitoring the fish consumption of expectant
mothers during the second and third trimesters of their pregnancies, Iranian researchers found that those who consumed the most
servings of fish per month were the least likely to deliver underweight babies, go into pre-term labor, or experience the pregnancy
complication pre-eclampsia. The Journal of the Pakistan Medical Association, December 2014
Exercise: Vigorous Exercise Could Lengthen Your Life. Regular vigorous physical activity may be the answer to boosting
longevity. A new study that followed over 204,000 people over age 45 for six years found that the death rate during the course of the
study for those who said up to 30% of their physical activity was vigorous was 9% lower than those who reported no vigorous activity.
Participants who reported that over 30% of their exercise was vigorous were 13% more likely to survive the study than those who
performed no vigorous exercise. Examples of vigorous activity include jogging, aerobics, and competitive tennis. Study author Dr.
Klaus Gebel did caution that "for those with medical conditions, for older people in general, and for those who have never done any
vigorous activity or exercise before, it's always important to talk to a doctor first." JAMA Internal Medicine, April 2015
Chiropractic: Shoulder Pain and Type 2 Diabetes. Among a group of 236 type 2 diabetics, researchers found nearly two-thirds
(63%) suffer from shoulder pain and/or disability. Compared with healthy controls, the diabetics in the study demonstrated substantial
reductions in shoulder range of motion, shoulder strength, grip/pinch strength, and sensation and joint mobility in the hand.
Physiotherapy, September 2014
Wellness/Prevention: New Score Predicts Heart Disease & Stroke Risk. Scientists have developed a new risk score that can
predict the ten-year risk of developing heart disease or experiencing a stroke in individuals 40 years or older anywhere in the world.
The new score is called Globorisk and unlike previous risk scores, it can be updated to fit local conditions and risk factor levels in
different countries. Globorisk measures cardiovascular risk by factoring smoking status, blood pressure, diabetes status, and total
cholesterol levels, while also adjusting for the effects of sex and age on cardiovascular disease between countries. Lead author Dr.
Goodarz Danaei explains, "Globorisk can be used to identify individuals at high risk of developing cardiovascular disease who are
most likely to benefit from lifestyle changes or preventive drug treatment." The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology, March 2015
