2. What is Hip Hop?
• Hip Hop is a cultural movement that began in the
Western Countries during the 1970’s among the
African and Latino origins.
• Hip hop has four main parts:
rapping, DJing, graffiti writing, and
b-boying (breakdancing).
• Other elements include beatboxing, hip hop
fashion, and hip hop slang.
• These different parts showed what city life was
like.
8. • Hip hop gave young people of minority groups a
voice to let their issues be noticed.
• Early hip hop has often been credited with helping
to reduce inner-city gang violence by replacing
physical violence with dance and artwork battles.
People used to break-dance against each other
instead of fighting.
• Hip hop culture became an outlet and a way of
dealing with the hardships of life as minorities
within Western Countries, and an outlet to deal
with violence and gang culture.
9. • Since first emerging in the Bronx and Harlem, the
lifestyle of hip hop culture has spread around the
world.
• However, as Hip Hop has become more popular,
the meaning and messages have changed to
include negative things.
