English as a Second Language (ESL)
Student Requirements The assessment of English as a Second Language includes listening, speaking, reading, and writing.  Once the student is enrolled, the school has four weeks to conduct a home language survey.  This is to determine what language is predominately spoken at home.  After the Home Language Survey is completed, it is then presented to the Language Proficiency Committee for evaluation. Once the results are finalized, the committee determines the educational plan.
Instructional Requirements All educational personnel are required to ensure appropriate instruction for LEP students.  Bilingual or ESL certified instructors may form teams with other teaching or support personnel to develop supplementary programs for LEP students.  all differentiated lesson planning, the LEP students’ program must modified to accommodate language and academic abilities in all subjects. Districts should adopt state-adopted textbooks to accommodate ESL students.
Teacher Specific Requirements .  To ensure a quality education to students that do not speak English, the State of Texas requires teachers to become ESL certified.  ESL certified does not involve being able to speak a second language, but it does involve knowing how to modify subject material to accommodate all learners.

ESL Student and Teacher Requirements

  • 1. English as a Second Language (ESL)
  • 2. Student Requirements The assessment of English as a Second Language includes listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Once the student is enrolled, the school has four weeks to conduct a home language survey. This is to determine what language is predominately spoken at home. After the Home Language Survey is completed, it is then presented to the Language Proficiency Committee for evaluation. Once the results are finalized, the committee determines the educational plan.
  • 3. Instructional Requirements All educational personnel are required to ensure appropriate instruction for LEP students. Bilingual or ESL certified instructors may form teams with other teaching or support personnel to develop supplementary programs for LEP students. all differentiated lesson planning, the LEP students’ program must modified to accommodate language and academic abilities in all subjects.   • 4. Teacher Specific Requirements . To ensure a quality education to students that do not speak English, the State of Texas requires teachers to become ESL certified. ESL certified does not involve being able to speak a second language, but it does involve knowing how to modify subject material to accommodate all learners.
