Multiplying & Dividing Monomials Written in
Scientific Notation
Before we begin, a mathematical truth to consider.
(2 x 5)( 4 x 5) = (2 x 4) (5 x 5)
Another way to state this is:
Which is, of course,
1
1
(2 x 5)( 4 x 5) = (2 x 4) (5 x 5 )
(2 x 4) (52)
We used both the commutative and associative properties
to rearrange the original problem. As mentioned
before, take what you already know, find similarities, and
proceed.
Let's look at specific problems to solve:
Practice Problems:
Use the associative & commutative
properties to regroup.

Write 14.45 in scientific notation: = (1.445 x 101) x 108

Next, Use the associative property to regroup.
= 1.445 x (101 x 108)

= 1.445 x 109
Practice Problems:
