When did you first decide to start the duo/band ? Jason: We didn’t really ever decide, were friend because we’re so similar, our passion is music. Jacob: yeah we spend all our time together so it was inevitable that we would play together. And our taste in music has always been the same.
How long have you been in music together? Jacob: well as long as we've been friends so…… Jason: around 7 years. Where did you get your name from? Jason: ahhh well it did take us a while… Jacob: and a lot of arguments… Jason: but we knew we wanted to be known for our music, not for our style, not for what we get up to, what we believe in… Jacob: So then it was obvious! We wanted to be known for the basics we do, ‘The Basic's’ seemed to fit.
What genre of music do you consider your work to be? Who are your major influences? Jason: we’re mainly punk/ rock with a touch of indie. Jacob: yeah we try and be different... what’s the point of being like someone else....you won’t stand out. Jason: we listen to bits of most things to get inspired; Green day, Florence and the machine, arctic monkeys, kings of Leon.... i could go on for ages.
*Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs? Do you think these topics will change over time? Jason: we both do, if one of us has an idea the other will add input, it helps hearing other people’s opinions. Jacob: we write our songs about what we know, our experiences, what we think about things and things that capture our attention. Jason: that’s what makes it our own it’s all about us. If people don’t like it or get it we’re not bothered, everyone has crazy different tastes.
*Could you briefly describe the music-making process? Jacob: well our process may be different from other bands. We write when we have ideas, and then show it to out manager.... Jason: it goes from he tells us what he thinks and whether it should be recorded properly to go on our album or not. That’s how we’ve made it.
*What are your rehearsals generally like? Do you have a set time each week in which you practice or are rehearsals more spontaneous? Jason: we’re always either singing or strumming so it’s like we’re constantly rehearsing. So I’d have to say spontaneous. Jacob: we don’t want to look to rehearsed otherwise it loses meaning and is fake, if you can’t perform on the spot then you shouldn’t be performing.
*What's your ultimate direction for your band? Are you seeking fame and fortune? Jason: I’m not fussed about the money iv always lived on the basics and been cool with that, being recognised would be good then we know it’s all worthwhile. Jacob: speak for yourself, I agree with the worthwhile stuff, but I would love the money. Living on the basics is fine but it would be nice to rich it up a bit.
*How can fans-to-be gain access to your music? Do you have a website with sample songs or a demo CD? Jason: we have facebook and myspace which our manager updates regularly. To find them just type in our name. Its F*** easy to find.It has some tracks from our last album for people to listen to or buy.
