About INDA
  International Program in Design and Architecture
  at Chulalongkorn University


•  INDA program was initiated in 2006 within
   the oldest university in Thailand

•  Undergraduate Bachelor of Science in
   Architecture degree (BSc) offered in
   4 years including summer programs

•  Students are given a fundamental
   background in architecture while
   exploring connections between design
   and various career paths

•  Global perspective with local action

•  New playground for a community school in
   central Thailand

•  Design based on analysis of several local
   and international playground examples

•  Students presented project to community
   stakeholders for feedback prior to
   construction

•  Project was built by students and instructors
   during a five day construction period

   several academic institutions to serve
   communities alienated by local development

•  Design integrates solar panels and water tanks
   due to lack of resources near the site

•  Prefabricated components and modern
   vernacular materials allow for efficient, cost
   effective construction

•  Students constructed a house for an
   underprivileged family

•  Part of a long-standing relationship with
   the Habitat for Humanity organization

•  Construction experience taught students
   conventional building methods

•  Students proposed alternative
   construction details using recycled
   materials as part of a counter-design

   Akha Village, Mae Sai Province

•  Creates a public gathering space for
   agricultural community at foot of Doi Nang
   Non mountain range

•  Floor deck and roof follow the topography of
   the site

•  Building materials combine bamboo, local
   hardwoods that are naturally resistance to
   pest and rot

•  Planting and water canals along steep slope

  • 1. DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION FOR COMMUNITIES International Program in Design and Architecture Faculty of Architecture | Chulalongkorn University Bangkok, Thailand

About INDA International Program in Design and Architecture at Chulalongkorn University •  INDA program was initiated in 2006 within the oldest university in Thailand •  Undergraduate Bachelor of Science in Architecture degree (BSc) offered in 4 years including summer programs •  Students are given a fundamental background in architecture while exploring connections between design and various career paths •  Global perspective with local action

Design and Construction for Communities International Program in Design and Architecture at Chulalongkorn University •  Enhances architectural training with hands-on construction experience •  Projects are designed and constructed under direct supervision of experienced faculty •  Students work with members of local community while creating meaningful projects throughout Thailand

Design and Construction for Communities International Program in Design and Architecture at Chulalongkorn University •  Partnerships with private and public donors are crucial to continued success of projects •  INDA has collaborated with government agencies, NGO s, and private businesses •  Projects are designed and built within a precise schedule during summer months •  INDA and Chulalongkorn University welcome opportunities for new collaborations

Knowledge Hut Ban Klong Pa-Mai, Rayong Province •  Indoor reading space and library for a rural community in Southeastern Thailand •  Project design integrates large shaded porches as a public amenity •  Construction methods helped to educate about possible improvements to local homes Project Date: 2007-2008 Partners & Supporters: Baker & McKenzie Ltd. Su Rau Keo Playground Ban Bua Thong, Nonthaburi province •  New playground for a community school in central Thailand •  Design based on analysis of several local and international playground examples •  Students presented project to community stakeholders for feedback prior to construction •  Project was built by students and instructors during a five day construction period Project Date: 2008 Partners & Supporters: The American Chamber of Commerce in Thailand (AmCham) Size: 50 square meters
  • 12. PHI PHI COMMUNITY RESOURCE CENTER Location : Leam Tong, Phi Phi Island Partners & Supporters: Round Square, The Regent s School Thailand,Fah Diow Foundation, The Faculty of Architecture at Chulalongkorn University Size: 500 square meters

Phi Phi International Community Resource Center Leam Tong, Phi Phi Island •  Collaboration between a local NGO group with several academic institutions to serve communities alienated by local development •  Design integrates solar panels and water tanks due to lack of resources near the site •  Prefabricated components and modern vernacular materials allow for efficient, cost effective construction Project Date: 2007-ongoing Partners & Supporters: Round Square, The Regent s School Thailand, Fah Diow Foundation, The Faculty of Architecture at Chulalongkorn University Size: 500 square meters
  • 14. HABITAT FOR HUMANITY Date: July 2010 Sponsors & Partners: Petroleum Authority of Thailand, Exploration and Production Public Company Limited PTTEP Size: 36 square meters
  • 15. Habitat for Humanity Khlong Five Community, Pathumthani Province •  Students constructed a house for an underprivileged family •  Part of a long-standing relationship with the Habitat for Humanity organization •  Construction experience taught students conventional building methods •  Students proposed alternative construction details using recycled materials as part of a counter-design
  • 16. reSALA Location : Summakorn Village, Bangkok Date: May-July 2010 Partners & Supporters: Cornell in Rome Program Size: 64 square meters

San Kred Thong Pavillion Akha Village, Mae Sai Province •  Creates a public gathering space for agricultural community at foot of Doi Nang Non mountain range •  Floor deck and roof follow the topography of the site •  Building materials combine bamboo, local hardwoods that are naturally resistance to pest and rot •  Planting and water canals along steep slope to address issues of soil erosion •  Includes Solar-powered lights since village lacks electricity Location : Akha Village, Mae Sai Province Date: July 2010 Size: 50 square meters and garden

  • 32. Once Upon a Tree School Improvements, Songkhla Province •  The kindergarten for 181 young students lacked adequate toilet or cooking facilities. " " •  natural ventilation, outdoor work space, encouraging hand washing for children and potential for future expansion for classroom buildings. " " •  The project was naming to remember a tree that once stood on site."
