This study analyzed attacking phases from 5 games of the 2010 FIFA World Cup to determine characteristics of optimal attacking phases. The duration, location won, and speed of phases were compared to scoring outcomes and team ranking. Results showed no relationship between duration and scoring but trends for goals within 11-15 and 21-25 seconds. More goals resulted from phases starting in the attacking third. Higher ranked teams had significantly faster phases than lower ranked teams. The study provides some support for pressing defenses and attacking in advanced zones to increase scoring success.
