Audience Research Analysis By Chloe Robinson
Question 1: What gender are you? I asked this question to determine the gender of my respondents, to see if answers to my questions varied depending on the gender.  However, to make my findings more accurate, I should have ensured that I had asked a equal number of male’s and females. 4 people ticked that they were male, and 11 people said that they were female.
Question 2: What age category are you? The options I gave were ‘11-15’, ‘16-21’, ‘22-25’, ‘26-30’ and ’31+’. I asked how old my respondents were, so I could again see if my answers vary, this time depending on age.  The majority of my respondents fell into the age category of 16-21. 2 people were aged between 11 and 15, and there was one person for each of the other categories.  To make my results slightly more fair, I could have ensured that I had an equal  amount of respondents for each category, but as music video’s tend to target a younger audience, I think that asking a majority of teenagers was appropriate.
Question 3: Do you watch music videos? I gave the options of ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ because I needed to know whether there was point in my audience completing the rest of my questionnaire.  If one of my respondents ticked ‘No’ they would not have to carry on answering my questi0nnaire. Luckily, only two people ticked ‘No’ so I will still be able to easily analyse the answers from the rest of the questions, from the 13  people that ticked ‘Yes’.
Question 4: How often do you watch music videos? I gave the options of ‘Everyday’, ‘3-5 times a week’, ‘Once a week’, ‘Less than once a week’, and ‘Hardly ever’. I asked this question to help me decide how much music videos appeal to my audience. For example, somebody who said that they watched music videos everyday, may like music videos more than someone who watches them once a week.  4 people said that they watch music videos everyday, 6 people said that they watch them 3-5 times a week and 3 people said that they watch them once a week. However, nobody said that they watch them less than once a week, or hardly ever, which may suggest that music videos are very popular to those who watch them.
Question 5: How do you watch/listen to music? I asked this question because I wanted to know how people prefer to watch music. I gave the option of ‘Music channels’, ‘Internet’, ‘iPod/mp4’, ‘Mobile phone’ and ‘Other (please specify)’. From looking at my answers, I can see that the most popular way that people watch music is on television on music channels, because 10 people ticked this option. ‘Internet’ was ticked 8 times, and ‘iPod, mp4’ was ticked 3 times. To make my results more accurate, I could have asked that only one option was ticked.
Question 6:What is your preferred genre of music? I gave the options of ‘Pop’, ‘Rock’, ‘RnB’, ‘Dance’, ‘Indie’, ‘Rap’ and ‘Other (please specify)’.  I wanted to know more about the kind of music that appeals to people, and to see what most people’s preferences are. ‘Pop’ was ticked seven times, ‘Rock’ was ticked four times, ‘RnB’ was ticked 5 times, ‘Dance’ was ticked 5 times, ‘Indie’ was ticked 3 times, ‘Rap’ was ticked 3 times and one person put a range of music in ‘Other’. From looking at these answers I can see that, to my audience, Pop music is the most popular, and Indie and Rap are the least popular. However, these results don't really mean anything, as I only received answers from a small amount of people.
Question 7:Do you think that music videos are a crucial part to the success of a song? I gave the options of ‘Yes’ and ‘No’. I wanted to know whether people thought that music videos are important in selling the song, or whether they think that a song can be a success without a music video to support it.  12 people ticked ‘Yes’ and only 1 person ticked ‘No’.
Question 8: Do you prefer music videos that follow a narrative story in relation to the lyrics? I gave the options of ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ again here, but I also added underneath the tick-boxes, ‘If so, why?’ which gave the opportunity for people to say why they prefer these videos. 2 people ticked ‘’No’ and everybody else said that the prefer videos that have a narrative story. The people that said that they prefer these kinds of music video gave a range of reasons why, such as; ,[object Object]

  • 20. Continued... I also noticed that most people that I asked prefer music videos that have a narrative story in relation to the lyrics. This is because they find that illustrational music videos have a meaning, they are memorable, interesting, and they find that it helps to understand the lyrics. However, other people also said that they prefer videos hat appear to have no apparent link to the lyrics and are completely abstract, because they are more interesting, and they are entertaining to watch. I also learnt that people enjoy dance, choreography, the story and performance in music videos, and this could be what most people expect from a music video, as these are regular features.
