“Kava”
By Kava_Girl on July 22nd, 2013
What is the history of “KAVA” in the
Western World?
In 1900 “kava” extract appeared in the Sears Roebuck catalog
as a “temperance wine”, an alternative to the demon drink.
If you purchased th extract then you were gifted a free tea
set. Until the late 1950s “kava” was registered in the U.S.
Pharmacopoeia, the official anthology of approved medicines,
for the treatment of gonorrhea and nervousness.
Pope John Paul partook of “kava” in Fiji, as well as many
diplomats and politicians. In 1996, a “kava” boom occurred,
fueled by the media, and sales of “kava” products sky-
rocketed in the US and Europe. Many human clinical studies
demonstrated the anti-anxiety effects, mostly conducted in
Europe, and seemingly overnight popularity increased. Being
tagged as “the natural Xanax” did wonders for the economy of
South Pacific island cultures.
Duke University Medical Center conducted two studies on
“kava”,in 2001. One study showed that “kava” is safe for the
liver, creating no real problems. The second study revealed
that “kava” is as effective for the treatment of anxiety as
the benzodiazepine class of drugs(Xanax,Valium),without the
hazards caused by these medicines.
One week before the release of the Duke findings, a European-
based report declared, contrary to all previous known medical
science, that “kava” had caused liver toxicity in 21 people.
This began the crash in “kava” popularity, European health
regulators over-reacted, and the South Pacific islanders took a
huge financial hit. Several years and many medical teams with
dedicated efforts finally established the “kava” liver toxicity
report to have no merit.
It seems as though the favor is back on the “kava” side. Not
only is the ritual alive and well in Vanuatu, but many people
are enjoying the drink here in the states. The market tides
are steadily shifting back in favor of the natural tranquility-
promoting root.
In other words, “Kava” is here to stay. For a non-alcohol, non-
drug based relaxing drink…you can’t be “Kava” for it’s benefits
and effects. Visit any of Kavasutra’s 4 South Florida locations
