1. Question 2 – How does your product
represent particular social groups?
By Katie Wright
2. Representing age
• Within our film opening, there are various
iconographies that support the conventions of
particular age groups.
• The prop used in the medium close-up of the
laptop supports the stereotype about
teenagers.
• Teenagers are typically associated to be “lazy”
and “modern”.
3. Representing age
• Laptops are modern and typically used for
leisurely activities such as video games.
• The background shows a group of teens at
prom, which then links the laptop with that
particular social group
which supports the
stereotypes connected
with teens.
4. Representing age
• The costumes used in our film opening also
support the stereotypes associated with
teenagers.
• In this mid shot, we can see a young male
wearing a hoodie with a backwards cap.
• Hooded teens are often
seen to be deviant and
threatening, which relates
back to the ideology of t
teens being violent.
5. Representing age
• The props used in the film opening subverts
the stereotypes associated with middle aged
people.
• In this mid shot, a tall middle aged man is
holding an axe in an unsafe manner.
• This subverts the ideology of
middle aged people being
responsible and sensible, as
the antagonist is mistreating
the use and purpose of the
axe.
6. Representing age
• The setting used subverts the stereotypes of
teenagers.
• In this mid shot, the surrounding area of this
young character is
woodland/countryside.
• But conventionally
you’d expect to find
teens in urban areas.
• This also subverts the
ideology about teens
being lazy or unfit as he
is out walking in the countryside.
7. Representing gender
• The film opening both supports and subverts the
archetypes associated with males.
• The camera angle used supports the archetypes about
males.
• This low angled shot shows a
male in a dark coat + an axe sharp axe.
• The low angle supports the
archetype about males being
dominant and strong, as it has
been structured so audience
appear to be looking up to him,
which suggests he has more
power.
8. Representing gender
• This same shot, however, could subvert the
archetypes associated with males.
• The makeup in this shot can be used to disprove
this.
• In this low angled mid shot,
we can see the antagonist
has long hair.
• This subverts archetypes
associated with males as long
hair is a trait that is
conventional for females.
