Disaster Preparedness Project

Project Duration
 Eight (8) months initially, Then Extended for additional four months.
started from July 2008-June 2009.
Project Goal
 To strengthen the level of Disaster preparedness at Community-and
District levels in Muzaffarabad and Bagh District, AJK.
Selected Area
District Muzaffarabad
 Phagwan Dupatta UC Hattian Dupatta
 Komi Kot UC Komi Kot

 Kharal Abbassian UC Islam Nagar
 Kharal Maldialan UC Islam Nagar
 Malteser International is involve in reconstruction of four BHU’s in
these selected areas with the implementing partner IBC (Turkish)
NGO.
Result 1
 The local authorities, and the local population are able to prepare for
and respond to natural disasters
Result 2
 In the event of an earthquake, the population of four selected
location (reconstruction of BHUs under Malteser International
Management) is enabled to seek safety before the shockwaves
cause damage and endanger lives by the alarm of pre-warning
system. This pre-warning system is called “Secty” which alarm
before one minute of earthquake and its can be hear in 5km of
radius.
Activities for Result 1
 Training of relevant government agencies in concept of Disaster
Preparedness and Risk Reduction.
 Establishment of Disaster Risk Management Committees (DRMC)
at union council level (total of 4 UC’s) and village level.
 Total numbers of DRMC are 25 including 4 on UC and remaining 21
on village levels depend on population of village.
 15-20 members are in UC DRMC and 12-15 members are in
V.DRMC.
 Total number of volunteers in 4 UC’s are 329.
 Training of selected members of the committees in Dip (TOT) to
then train local committees, in:
 Concept of Disaster Preparedness & Risk Management
 First Aid
 Search and Rescue (SAR)
 Provision of First Aid training & Equipment to the local
committees
 Provision of SAR training & Equipment to the local
committees
 Drawing up a Hazard maps of the selected area & providing
map to be use for the Developmental and Disaster
Management plans at UC levels.
Activities for Result 2
 Installation of Earthquake pre-warning system ( 1 each in a total of 4
BHUs)
 Instruction of BHU staff and DRMC's at village level in use and
maintenance of the systems
 Training of the local population in the proper reaction to an
earthquake warning, by organizing an earthquake simulation.
