RESPIRATORY SYSTEM

2. WHAT IS A RESPIRATORY INFECTION?
A Respiratory infection is any infection that is
located in the respiratory tract.
Symptoms of Respiratory infections
•Shortness of breath
•Shortness of breath on exertion
•Syncope
•Dyspnoea
•Chest pain
•Tachycardia
•Tachypnoea
•Fatigue

3. THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
• The respiratory system extends from the nose to the
pulmonary capillaries inside of the lungs. It performs
the essential function of gas exchange between
the body, and its environment. In other words, it
takes in oxygen and expels carbon dioxide.

4. Drugs used to improve respiratory symptoms are
available in inhalation. and systemic formulations.
These drugs include:
Classification
1. Antibiotic – Kills bacteria caused by a upper respiratory
infection.
2. Antihistamine – Blocks the effect of the histamine that has
been released by the body during an allergy attack.
3. Antitussive – Relieves the urge to cough.

5. CIPRO
Brand Name(s): Cipro
• What is Cipro?
Cipro (ciprofloxacin) is an oral medication, that is classified
in the antibiotic in a group of drugs called
“fluoroquinolones.” It is used to fight bacteria in the body.
Cipro is also used to treat different types of bacterial
infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
• Did You Know?
This antibiotic treats only bacterial infections. It will not
work for virus infections (e.g., common colds, and the flu).

6. SIDE EFFECTS
• Nausea
• diarrhea
• dizziness
• lightheadedness
• Headache
• trouble sleeping
• severe/persistent headache
• vision changes
• shaking (tremors)
• seizures
• severe dizziness
• fainting
• fast/irregular heartbeat
• mental/mood changes (e.g., anxiety, confusion, hallucinations,
depression, and rare thoughts of suicide).

7. ALLEGRA
Brand Name: Allegra
Generic Name: fexofenadine
• What is Allegra?
Fexofenadine is an antihistamine that works by
blocking a certain natural substance (histamine) that
your body makes during an allergic reaction.

8. SIDE EFFECTS
• Cough
• fever
• Upset stomach
• rash
• Itching or swelling (especially of the face, tongue,
and throat)
• severe dizziness
• trouble breathing

9. HYCODAN
Brand Name(s): Hycodan, Tussigon
• What is Hycodan?
This medication is used to relieve a dry cough usually
caused by the common respiratory cold. Relieving a cough
helps you get more rest and sleep.
• Did you know?
This product contains 2 medications, hydrocodone and
homatropine. Hydrocodone is a narcotic cough suppressant
(antitussive) that works on certain centers in the brain to stop the
urge to cough. Homatropine belongs to a class of drugs known
as anticholinergics.

10. SIDE EFFECTS
• Lightheadedness
• dizziness
• drowsiness
• vision changes
• vomiting
• constipation may also occur
Nausea commonly occurs with the use of
hydrocodone and usually goes away after the first
few doses.
