Important AmericanSymbols By: Alexis Her
The American Flag The American Flag represents America, the flag was created to represent the Grand American Army and the 13 original colonies. The red and white stripes on the flag stand for the 13 original colonies. The stars on the flag stand for the 50 states in America.
The Great Seal The Great Seal is a great detailed symbol that represents our country. The seal is found on passports, money, medals, and important documents. In the front of the Great Seal, it shows our national bird, the bald eagle, holding an olive branch with 13 berries and leaves in the right talon. They represent the 13 original colonies. In the left talon it’s holding 13 arrows. This represents the power of peace and war. Our nation’s motto is “E pluribus Unum” meaning “out of many one”. “Aunit coeptis” which means “it has favored our undertakings” is on top of the unfinished pyramid behind the Great Seal. “Novus ordo seplorum” means “a new order of the ages” is below the unfinished pyramid. The backside of the Great Seal is an unfinished pyramid that represents that more states can be bedded in the U.S.
The Liberty Bell The Liberty Bell is a symbol for peace, it was originally made in England. In 1753, the Liberty Bell hung in the bell tower of the state house in Pennsylvania. The last time it was rung was in 1846, in honor of George Washington’s birthday. Today it is now standing at the Liberty Bell center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The 4th of July Our nation’s birthday is July 4, 1776. On this date the Declaration of Independence was approved. Thomas Jefferson drafted the Declaration of Independence. This important document explained why the 13 colonies wanted to be separated from England. We now celebrate our nation’s independence by celebrating it with fireworks at night time.
The Statue of Liberty The Statue of Liberty is a symbol of freedom and liberty throughout the world. France gave the statue of Liberty to the U.S to celebrate the 100 years of American independence and the friendship between the 2 countries. The Statue of Liberty sits in the New York harbor.
Our National Anthem The national Anthem is called The Star Spangled Banner. Francis Scott Key wrote our anthem. Our National Anthem was originally a poem called “The Defense of Fort McHenry”.
