The Anti-Music Piracy Projekt By: Justin Schlener
This presentation is to inform you more on music piracy and the effects it has on the industry, so hopefully after viewing this you will have a better piece of mind on the subject at hand. The information contained here has been retrieved from various locations which I will provide for you at the end of this presentation. Thank You for your support and enjoy! Introduction
Limewire and other software programs like this one re make it real hard for the striving artist and this presentation will tell you why….. This is the leading illegal download software
Music piracy can be defined as the stealing of music.  One scenario could be borrowing a friend's CD and burning a copy for yourself.  Also, downloading music from the Internet if the song's royalties are not paid. Piracy is the illegal copying of copyrighted material.  This can be, but is not limited to music, games, and videos. What is Music Piracy?
In the past 3 years, unit shipments of recorded music have fallen by 26 percent from 1.16 billion units in 1999 to 860 million units in 2002 within the US(based on units shipped). In the terms of sales, revenues are down 14 percent, from 14.6 billion dollars in 1999 to 12.6 billion dollars last year(based on US dollar value of shipments). The music industry worldwide has gone from a $39 billion industry in 2000 down to $32 billion industry in 2002. Computer users illegally download more then 2.6 billion copyrighted files (mostly songs) every month. At any given moment, more then five million users are online offering an estimated one billion files for copying through various peer to peer networks. Releasing an album with major distribution costs a record label at least $1 million; of thousands of new titles released each year by major labels, fewer then 10 percent are profitable. North American sales of blank CD's shot up by more than 30% in 2002-outstripping sales of music CD's by more than 2-to-1 margin. At the same time, sales of MP3 players jumped 56 percent(International Recording Media Association) According to a November 2002 survey by Peter D. Hart Research, by a 2-to-1 margin, most consumers who say they are downloading more music report that they are purchasing less. The same survey found that the main reason teenagers are not buying more music is that they get alot of what they want for free by downloading or copying it. Among 12-to 18-year olds, 35 percent will download a new song they like versus just 10 percent who will buy it. Among 19-to 24-year olds, 32 percent download vs. 9 percent who will buy it. Facts about Music Piracy
The RIAA stands The Recording Industry Association of American which is the trade group that represents the U.S. recording industry. Its mission is to foster a business and legal climate that supports and promotes our members' creative and financial vitality. Its members are the record companies that comprise the most vibrant national music industry in the world. The RIAA(R) members create, manufacture and/or distribute approximately 85% of all legitimate sound recordings produced and sold in the United States. In support of this mission, the RIAA works to protect intellectual property rights worldwide and the First Amendment rights of artists, conducts consumer, industry and technical research; and monitors and reviews state and federal laws, regulations and policies. The RIAA(R) also certifies Gold(R), Platinum(R), Multi-Platinum(R), and Diamond sales awards, as well as Los Premios De Oro y Platinoi(R), an award celebrating Latin music sales. Who is the RIAA?
However, the protection of copyright holders is only half of the story. The other side is that users of creative works are entitled to reasonable access to them. This concept of fair use permits academic and other commercial users to make copies of parts of copyrighted works for personal use and also for purposes of analyzing them in classrooms, in academic publications, or in artistic work, so long as they do not diminish the market for the works. Protecting Consumer Rights
RipBlock is a new anti-piracy service aimed at independent music labels.   RipBlock is currently working with a rapidly growing number of labels, and has proved to be an efficient, cost-effective and valuable service. RipBlock essentially tackles piracy from the root of the problem, by conducting ongoing comprehensive scans of any blogs, forums and/or file share sites that are hosting or providing links to illegal downloads of your release. RipBlock’s service includes: Scanning the web for your release Reporting any illegal content and monitoring its removal Compiling a full report every two weeks, detailing all removed content and all offending usernames A standard scan lasts for two weeks and costs from £50 / 53 euro / $78 per release. In addition, Ripblock offers extended scanning tailored to your label’s requirements. WHAT WE DO We actively scan search engines, known MP3 linking sites, blogs, forums and file hosting servers for our clients' copyright content. Once the copyright content is located, it is then reported to the file hosting companies' abuse teams for removal. We have been developing relationships with all major file hosting companies, with the aim of working side by side to speed up the removal processes. Additionally, we are in the process of collecting user information on offending uploaders of copyright content. These users will be added to our 'Known File Sharer Database', which will be freely available to our clients to cross reference against promo pool, online retailer and user databases to locate and take action against active offenders. As a label manager for a large music publishing company, I grew increasingly tired of “the problem is too vast to tackle” attitude. We must take action in any way possible to remove the spread of our content via MP3 linking sites and file hosting websites. There are methods available to us all which have proved to be highly effective in preventing the spread of content over the web. The trend for offenders is to firstly upload copyright content by abusing legal file hosting websites such as Rapidshare, Megaupload and Upload.to. They then post links to these files on illegal MP3 linking sites providing the public with an opportunity to download the copright content for free. Using this method, the offender can spread the link very simply across a vast array of websites, blogs and forums. By removing the files at the root of problem, we can significantly reduce the spread of copyright content over the web, and with continued active scanning, we believe we can start to eradiacte the source of the problem. We can also remove content from numerous torrent sites. New Technologies against Music Piracy
This label is becoming more and more common within CD covers along with the ripblock, all efforts to stop piracy as much as possible. Law enforcement agencies have becoming more aware of the situation and have taken more action against it over the past years. Anti-Piracy Warning
A positive consequence of stealing music is that you get free music for your own personal enjoyment.  You can also profit from piracy.  However, more often than not, piracy will result in the negative consequences.  Caught pirates are sued and occasionally served with jail terms.    In the Constitution, there is a clause that empowers Congress "to promote the progress of science and useful arts, by securing for limited times to authors and inventors the exclusive right to their respective writings and discoveries." (Article 1, Section 8)  This is the basis for patents. The Copyright Act states that only the copyright owner has the right "to reproduce the copyrighted work in copies or phonorecords."
