This document discusses quality standards and frameworks. It introduces the justification for quality standards to build customer confidence and access international markets. Key frameworks covered include the 5S methodology for workplace organization, ISO 9000 for quality management systems, PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) for continuous improvement, CMM (Capability Maturity Model) for software process improvement, and KPAs (Key Process Areas) that define maturity levels in CMM. The document promotes applying quality standards and frameworks like ISO 9000 and TQM (Total Quality Management) principles for organizational success.
2. Justification
● Increased market globalisation
● Need of customers to be confident about the
product/service they are buying.
● It builds customer’s confidence.
● Certified companies, icreased their market
opportunities.
● Acceptance in international markets
3. Reasons for implementing the QSS
● Reduce first time failure
● Reduce custo of customer claims
● Get things done right the first time
● Improve service to the customer
● Increase competitiveness
● Pressure from large customers
● To maintain contracts with existing customers
● To use the constraints of the standard to prevent scrap
● To reduce auditing of quality systems by customers
4. Kaizen and 5S
The theory behind the Kaizen and 5S is Workplace
improvement. This is Japanese style of quality
improvement.
● Kaizen is a continuous ongoing improvement involving
everyone in the organization from top management to
staff level.
● 5S is an effective approach of improving out work
environment
5. 5S defined
5S Japanese Word Meaning
1S Seiri Sort out unnecessary
items in the workplace
and discard them.
2S Seiton Arrange necessary items
in good order so that
they can be easily
picked for use. A place
for everything in its
place.
3S Seiso Clean your workplace
thoroughly so that there
is no dust on floors,
machine and equipment.
4S Seiketsu Maintain high standards
of housekeeping at
workplace at all times
5S Shitsuke Train people to follow
good housekeeping
disciplines automatically
6. ISO 9000
ISO is a non-governmental organization established in
1947. The mission is to promote the development of
standardization and related activities in the world with a
view to facilitating the international exchange of goods and
services.
Is the acronym for International Organization for
Standardization.
7. ISO of TQM
● There is a misconception that ISO 9000 certification can guarantee a
quality product or service.
● ISO 9000 is a good foundation on which to apply the TQM principles. Once
ISO 9000 certification is obtained and the current compliance with the laid
down systems and standards are ensured, the PDCA cycle of continuous
improvement can be applied, to reach the higher quality realms of TQM.
● ISO 9000 and TQM are complementary to each other.
● ISO 9000 and TQM are passports to success.
9. BSI Standards
British Standards Institution
● Came from the military after the WWII. As a result, MoD, AQAP, NATO
were born.
● Major automotive industries established their own quality system
standards. In order to control the increase in different types of QSS, BSI
eventually developed the military standards into a series of BS and it has
been used as the source for ISO 9000 series.
10. CMM
Developed by the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) at Carnegie-Mellon
University of U.S.A.
It is a model of 5 levels of organizational ‘maturity’ that determines the
effectiveness in delivering quality software. It is geared to large organizations
such as the U.S. Defence Department.
CMM can be used for:
● Software Process improvement
● Software Process Assessment
● Software Capability evaluation
11.
12. KPAs of different levels of CMM
Key Process areas are focus areas for the process improvement.
Initial Level KPAs
Level 1 does not have any KPAs, Initially an organization gets the job done.
Repeatable Level KPAs
● Requirement Management
● Software Project Planning
● Software Project Tracking and Oversight
● Software Subcontract Management
● Software Quality Assurance
● Software Configuration Management
