Common Core Standards
• Complex texts are a cornerstone of the Common Core
  State Standards. (Standard 10)
• Students must be taught to do an independent close
  reading of a text using strategies. (No over-scaffolding.)
• Students must persists despite the discomfort inherent
  in analyzing complex text- a Socratic approach to
  understanding.
• Interventions are to focus on vocabulary and syntax of
  complex sentences so students can be independent.
• Go beyond “text-to-self” connections (Instructional time,
  equity, rigor). What is the text saying?
