Habitat #1- Masai Giraffe
  giraffa camelopardalis
Maintenance
• The exhibit of the giraffe will be located outside
  to create a more natural setting
• A combination of solid walls and sturdy wood
  fencing will be used to surround the perimeter
  of the enclosure. Giraffes tend to lean against
  the fences to reach the plants
• There are several, very tall wooden poles (2m-
  3m off the ground) placed throughout the
  habitat that contain barrels of hay for the
  animals to eat
Maintenance (cont.)
• The ground is firm, dry, and is no steeper
  than 40 degrees for the safety of the
  animals
• The surrounding plants are made sure to
  be non-toxic
• Water troughs are placed ground level
  throughout the exhibit for their water
  source
Maintenance (cont.)
• The hay barrels are
  rotated and emptied
  on a weekly basis to
  keep fresh
• Water troughs are
  washed out and
  scrubbed daily
• There is a
  fresh, clean water
  supply at all times
  for the nourishment
  of the giraffes
Medical Treatment
• Preventative medicine programs are used
  to prevent diseases
• Regular faecal collection is for
  indentifying and treating internal and
  external parasites
• Weighing and taking blood of the animals
  is done year round

• Daily health checks include observing
  appearance, physical state, normal
  urination and defecation, and food intake
• Routine health checks such as
  injections, oral administration of
  drugs, hoof work, and rectal and vaginal
  examinations are done to prevent any
  diseases
Public Viewing
• There is an
  elevated viewing
  platform for safe
  public viewing and
  feeding of the
  giraffes
• Zookeepers are
  carefully
  monitoring for the
  safety of the
  humans as well as
  the animals
Handicap Accessibility
• All buildings and exhibits are accessible
  for the handicapped, including the
  giraffe exhibit
• There is a ramp located for wheelchair
  accessibility for the elevated viewing
  ground
Severe Weather Conditions
• The exhibit is equipped with a house for
  the giraffes for shelter from inclement
  weather
• The house provides area for the animals
  to be fed and roam around
• The house contains a smooth paneling
  and no bolts or screws for the safety of
  the giraffes

Maintenance
• The exhibit of the elephant contains an
  outdoor and indoor area
• The outside area is 2,000 square miles
  and no more than 8 elephants are kept in
  an exhibit provide sufficient space for the
  animals
• The ground is a combination of
  concrete, that reduces foot/toenail
  growth, and sand for dust bathing
Maintenance (cont.)
• A man-made pool, the slope no greater
  than 30° is available to the elephants for
  cooling and bathing purposes
• There are no vertical slides and no-slip
  surfaces for the safety of the animals
• Diagonal bars outline the perimeter of the
  exhibit to prevent the elephants from
  escaping
Maintenance (cont.)
• Manual back-up of the gates is provided
  in cases of emergency
• The elephants eat 125-175 pounds and
  are fed small portions throughout the day
• The majority of their diet is hay but are
  also given fruits
• The elephants drink from the pool to stay
  hydrated

  located in the house
  for filling and cleaning
  from outside the
  enclosure
