Second Step – A Violence Prevention Curriculum
WHY? One of the strategic goals of Irving Park is to implement and sustain a school wide – evidenced based social emotional learning program. Second Step is one of the premier kits and also the easiest to implement in the classroom and add your own personal flair and pizzazz to what you are already teaching. This  should be an ADDITION to your classroom climate and gives IP consistent verbiage throughout the building.
What Should it do? – Improve School Climate Social emotional learning skills help students form healthy relationships they need for school and life success Socially competent children and youth get along better with their teachers, who tend to like them  and provide them with more support – which improves their school performance. Students with good relationships with peers and teachers are also more connected to school and then they are more motivated to succeed academically, have higher test scores, and behave well.
Classroom Management School connectedness is also stronger for students in organized and well managed classrooms where they feel supported and respected. Classroom management at IP starts the first day the children enter the building.  The better you manage and set limits and expectations at the beginning – the faster your form a cohesive and safe place for learning. Management of your rooms is a much easier task with children who are socially and emotionally competent.

Teaching Strategies Lessons are highly interactive and use a variety of teaching strategies to engage students interest.   Strategies include class discussion; individual, partner, and small group activities; and skill practices. The inclusion of skill practice in the program is grounded in social learning theory.  Students observe and rehearse social skills in the context of interacting with a group or partner.  Teachers model, cue and reinforce the behaviors practiced in program lessons.

Parents/GuardiansFriend or Foe?
We need to love & respect them Parents/guardians are the ones that have chosen for their child to attend IP – we are a school of choice. Parents (most) want their children to succeed academically, socially, behaviorally and emotionally. While we CANNOT control what happens outside of school  - we CAN control our environment. You CAN make the difference by establishing and modeling healthy social emotional well being.
How does this happen? Make sure that you are healthy, emotionally and physically – everything in moderation, checking your own baggage at the door, and prepared. I know, sometimes this is hard – that is why we are here for you What are some things that you do to stay healthy?
SEL Wednesday  School wide – SEL will be implemented on Wednesdays.  Each classroom is devoted 30-45 minutes each week to either your second step lesson or “re – teaching” the lesson that you have already implemented in your morning meeting. Morning meetings are invaluable.  They set the tone of the day – expectations are clear and we ALL start out positive. Mrs. Heiman has materials to lend to make your morning meeting magnanomous!
Community Meeting  Ms. Mandel and I have designed the CM to be in alignment with your SEL teachings in your classroom.  Again, everyone in the building being taught the same message – in an age appropriate manner.
SEL Mission & Vision Statement At CICS Irving Park, students, staff, and families work together to create a caring community of learners. Our goal is to ensure that every student is instilled with a sense of belongingness and a love of learning; we strive to ensure that each member of our school community feels safe, welcome, and valued.  By teaching essential life skills, building caring relationships, and modeling respectful behavior, Irving Park team members create a context for learning that supports the development of all students as empathetic, self-aware, and socially-responsible citizens.

  • 2. Second Step – A Violence Prevention Curriculum
  • 3. WHY? One of the strategic goals of Irving Park is to implement and sustain a school wide – evidenced based social emotional learning program. Second Step is one of the premier kits and also the easiest to implement in the classroom and add your own personal flair and pizzazz to what you are already teaching. This should be an ADDITION to your classroom climate and gives IP consistent verbiage throughout the building.
  • 4. What Should it do? – Improve School Climate Social emotional learning skills help students form healthy relationships they need for school and life success Socially competent children and youth get along better with their teachers, who tend to like them and provide them with more support – which improves their school performance. Students with good relationships with peers and teachers are also more connected to school and then they are more motivated to succeed academically, have higher test scores, and behave well.
  • 5. Classroom Management School connectedness is also stronger for students in organized and well managed classrooms where they feel supported and respected. Classroom management at IP starts the first day the children enter the building. The better you manage and set limits and expectations at the beginning – the faster your form a cohesive and safe place for learning. Management of your rooms is a much easier task with children who are socially and emotionally competent.

  • 7. Teaching Strategies Lessons are highly interactive and use a variety of teaching strategies to engage students interest. Strategies include class discussion; individual, partner, and small group activities; and skill practices. The inclusion of skill practice in the program is grounded in social learning theory. Students observe and rehearse social skills in the context of interacting with a group or partner. Teachers model, cue and reinforce the behaviors practiced in program lessons.

  • 10. We need to love & respect them Parents/guardians are the ones that have chosen for their child to attend IP – we are a school of choice. Parents (most) want their children to succeed academically, socially, behaviorally and emotionally. While we CANNOT control what happens outside of school - we CAN control our environment. You CAN make the difference by establishing and modeling healthy social emotional well being.
  • 11. How does this happen? Make sure that you are healthy, emotionally and physically – everything in moderation, checking your own baggage at the door, and prepared. I know, sometimes this is hard – that is why we are here for you What are some things that you do to stay healthy?
  • 12. SEL Wednesday School wide – SEL will be implemented on Wednesdays. Each classroom is devoted 30-45 minutes each week to either your second step lesson or “re – teaching” the lesson that you have already implemented in your morning meeting. Morning meetings are invaluable. They set the tone of the day – expectations are clear and we ALL start out positive. Mrs. Heiman has materials to lend to make your morning meeting magnanomous!
  • 13. Community Meeting Ms. Mandel and I have designed the CM to be in alignment with your SEL teachings in your classroom. Again, everyone in the building being taught the same message – in an age appropriate manner.

Our goal is to ensure that every student is instilled with a sense of belongingness and a love of learning; we strive to ensure that each member of our school community feels safe, welcome, and valued. By teaching essential life skills, building caring relationships, and modeling respectful behavior, Irving Park team members create a context for learning that supports the development of all students as empathetic, self-aware, and socially-responsible citizens.
