Notas do Editor

  1. Over the last two decades the robotics industry has exploded! Seeing innovation in from the battlefield to our own living rooms. Robotic development and deployment has a base in not only technical know how, but also in customer acceptance of the product. This has made it very critical for robotics companies to understand the key end users and influences within their markets.Within the manufacturing force robotics has changed the face of assembly for cars , electronics and more. Even more recently the Robot Baxter has been trying to break down the high cost barriers that have been preventing smaller manufacturing processes to be automated. After products are manufactured robots provide fulfillment of shipping and warehouse management. This trend can be confirmed by Amazon’s recent acquisition of Kiva robotics for $775 M, showing that this is a market and will only expand more.An of course we cannot forget the industries somewhat obsession with humanoid robots….
  2. But what has been suprising is increasing public perception around robotics. Robots are starting to become “celebrity's” gartnering millions of hits on youtube channels and millions of viewers for competitions suck as FIRST robotics and Combat Roboitcs. For example I am sure that you all remember this video of Big dog by Boston Dynamics. A 4 legged walking robot designed to be a mule for the military. Amazing balance and just the cool factor brought millions of people to see this video and talk about it.
  3. More recently we have seen robotics pop up in business again and get a positive public opinion. Jeff Bezos of Amazon, announced their intent (weather real or not) in amazon prime air earlier this week. The concept is quadrotors that can deliver small packages within 30 mins to people located within a 10 mil radius of distribution centers.Quadrotors have continues to pop up over and over again from the startup taco-coptor in califronia, aiming to deliver tacos to hungry customers by air and now with this amazon prime air. However, the FAA has still failed to figure out the proper regulations for these types of systems. Will public demand be able to push government regulation to react quickly…
  4. Outside of public opinion we have seen a growing movement in the form of Open source. Open source technology is based around the idea that a company can create a basic platform that they share all of the information and development behind it with the public. The public can then choose to utilize this product and create with it. Some of the time these products have seen tremendous growth and have fostered the creation of great communities that exist to support and develop with this open source platforms. The community effectively serves not only as a support structure but also as an R&D development team. However for many of the open source platforms the companys see this community as a way to create new things and gain detailed customer insight without addition costly market research. For example in the technical field we have seen open source technology grown in software, electrical hardware, processors as well as hardware creation.A great example of software open source within the robotics community is the Robotic Operating System or ROS, which is a standardized robotic control system that was developed by Willow Garage for the intent to speed robotic development by reducing the amount of time that would be required to interface different aspects of the robot , sensors, motors, etc. Willow Garage served as creating the original platform and has continued to develop modules for it on the complex PR2 Robot. However, the community around ROS has grown as it has been adopted by startups, colleges and hobbiest alike. New modules are created and shared everyday and the development cycle for many robots is starting to decrease. While ROS has seen success in both the hobby and professional market, we can step back and look at two systems that have expanding the hobby market tremendously. The first of which the arduino created the ability for anyone to learn how to program and control simple devices. They created a basic processing board that also had all of the supporting electronics and software to build on, right out of the box. The community around the arduino has exploded and now there are multiple versions and addons that have been created. These were create within the community and have helped startups grow and inventions become realized. The arduino allows any hobbiest to add electronic control to their ideas and has eliminited that knowledge hurdle that many R&D firms hold so dear. The only issue that we have seen with this open source revolution is that is it not a professional product. It serves perfectly for hobby style devices, but when there is an attempt to move into comercial products there is still a large gap.The other of these two hobby open source systems is the Maker Bot desktop 3d printing system. This started years ago with a completely open source 3d printer that allowed low quality 3d prints to be made at home or in a small office at the fraction of the cost of many larger printers. This has grown into a humongous community that sharts designs for printers and parts to be printed through the makerbots library. This library called the thingiverse has over a million parts on it and is growing every day. The 3d printing market was on lock down, but the creation of the first makerbot broke that barrier and now there are hundreds of hobby grade 3d printers based on its desing. One of which is now even available to be purchased in stapples. Both of these hobby open source devices created a massive community that helped to troubleshoot, develop, support and grow the demand for these products. Even with a lower price tag or not as complex solutions they were able to grow into industry drivers and become common names within the hobby industry. Their brands are so strong that is it hardpressed to find someone who cannot recongize the name.Robots are becoming more visual and easy to get access to, what will be the next step to launch robots into everyday life.
  5. We believe that there is a huge opportunity here to not only foster robotic growth, but foster knowledge growth. The overhead requirements in terms of knowledge, resources and proprietary information for robotics is immense, and while some hobby players are starting to create “robots” for cheaper they simply do not stand up to the test of time/ the environment. As I was once told by my advisor in school for a project, “record every test that you peform, because that one time that it works is all that you need, we don’t need repeatability to prove a theory, just one success”. This just shows that there is a fundamental difference between hobby or academic and company production for the real world. What if hobbyists and academics could learn the real world lessons that companies are struggling with over and over again. We propose a new learning platform created to foster knowledge transfer between educators, hobbyists and comercial application specialists , in order to create an equal playing field for robotics. Without the power of the crowds we will be doomed to recreated and invent every time we try to “use the wheel”. We would like to introduce Robocampus, the collaborate education platform created for the future of robotics and society. With the creation of these educational platform, we also plan to utilize this increased knowledge by having a international Metalympics. We aim to help increase public awareness and excitement about robotics, by offering a unique international competition centered around world problems. We will create standardized intelligent robots and a knowledgebase community, available to any team, in order to lower the barrier to entry into the Metalympics and all for rapid technological innovation.
  6. Robocampus will employ the emergent paradigm of online gaming in a team environment to foster competitive learning. The world will be more complex than world of warcraft, involving a number of complex parts, programming, and problems, in a physics based world where the cost of building a new robot and using it is nothing, since its measurements and functions are all based on a blueprint which is lines of data in a database.Users build teams trying to compete to solve a variety of problems in a virtual world. Community discussion boards.Processes are taught and then the world gives room for a variety of creative applications. The two main functions of this paradigm are learning and building. New builds can be shared or (if the teams or users decide) bought or sold in the online currency. In the real world, a big asset for these builders will be that they get an opportunity to compete for exposure to the big companies of the world, to improve their human capital.
  7. A user creates an account and can choose to join a team (much like a guild). They receive credits and points for completing different basic challenges. An individual “owns” a default human like robot, which is their avatar. They can modify and improve this robot, but it is used primarily to build new robots for their team.Companies issuing challenges. Educators, companies issue challenges on the platform and have their problems crowdsourced by the hive.Over time the challenges increase in difficulty, eventually involving actual programming in game and the ability to build robots of increasing complexity.Teams begin to pick up prestige in this world, and as they advance they are rewarded for teaching their skills and “shortcuts” to new users. What are these rewards? They involve a virtual currency and a record of stats on the users’ profiles which can be viewed by recruiters like a linkedin page. Users can use their currencies to buy new parts, new builds, etc.
  8. A curriculum is to be developed and constantly refined over time, with in game challenges varying and being improved upon based on user experience. This will involve a feedback loop of OODA: observation, orientation, decision, and action. These steps will be based upon user preferences and analytics in the process of global innovation. As the innovation is constantly changing, the curricula will be constantly rendered obsolete and must stay up to date, with increasing levels being added over time to cater to the new levels of genius that will come out of this.Existing experts will continue to add and program options for parts based on global robotics needs and the results of Metalympics. Each year the crowd will add new challenges that need to be tackled at themetalympics and crowdsourced ideas which do not make it to the main competition will be put into online levels. We will have no shortage of ideas that need to be tackled as we get teacher and company buy in. Companies will submit issues that they need to be solved and that can generate demand for them.Kaizen, both in the user interface and in the learning pyramid, must constantly be built up as the general public becomes more and more knowledgeable. The hardest issues will be put front and center for the greatest minds to solve, and every answer will lead to a thousand more questions.
  9. Students are able to be a part of something bigger than themselves. At the very beginning of a typical case, a student will be recruited to be part of a gang. The natural child structure of gangs and teams will foster and compel a group to learn and expand their knowledge. In the third world, kids and adults who would not normally have access to a high level of education will be able to go online and use this platform for free. Finding talent in the third world is a high priority, as at present there is a great deal of genius that remains in obscurity due to a lack of opportunity, and the talent that exists in the first world tends to stagnate due to complacence. Through this platform, the raw talent desperate for an opportunity to innovate will find exposure and be brought to the right resources for massive change. These are also the players who are most familiar with the basic human needs that robotics can solve.Graduate students and the existing communities around higher education will also benefit from this platform in that they will be able to quickly share ideas and gain recognition from professors. Class time will be disrupted and improved, as the teacher learns to foster great new ideas.Companies which want to foster new ideas will be able to use this technology in house to both collaborate with other companies and to keep their thoughts in house. Great talent will move up the ladder as they demonstrate their new ideas. This platform will be used as a funnel toward the metalympics, and elite teams will continue to use it to train for their final builds that will be used in the global competition. Finally hobbyists and local leagues will be enhanced by a virtual platform.
  10. + At first thought one would think that Educators lose out in such anemergent structure that flips the old system, but in reality they will have access to the best students and be able to continue to expand their own knowledge through global networks and low barriers to entry to higher levels of research.+ The platform will need to be pedagogically useful and practical. The stats should be as legitimate as possible and users will need to be checked for cheating. There should be no way to game the system.- The existing structures may be broken up and some teachers may lose their jobs. Luckily these will be the teachers that stink and that only existed thanks to the old ways of hierarchically lodging poor talent in complex bureaucracy and nepotism. These teachers may raise a significant fight, but in the end the best talent makes the money and moves things forward.- The control structures of education in this area are rendered obsolete. Tests and curriculum of the old control structures are broken and have to be thrown away because they are no longer necessary.
  11. Governments and companies will have an HR dream come true. The biggest risk is that newly skilled individuals could develop harmful robots that cause damage efficiently. The same issue as the modern 3d printed weapons issue.
  12. These will be the main driving factor, we will need to pick up critical mass early on by a compelling buzz and charismatic visionary leadership that is contagiousThese designers will have to learn to work with a new paradigm, new code, etc.             The existing educational structures may be superceded and the structures of who is best and worst may be overturned. For instance, the F student may become the most creative and key part of the team.
  13. The pyramid of learning causes a blastoff effect, as the new ideas of yesterday become common knowledge. Everyone moving up the pyramid causes it to have to grow, exponentially faster. Those at the top are constantly teaching and finding shortcuts, refining the learning ladders. Humanity will advance and begin to build more and more systems to solve everyday tasks. As the knowledge baseline of society is changing and becoming more technical, they will be looking for more avenues to test themselves and flap their wings so to speak. The Robocampus will serve as a challenge to society, companies, educators and governments to be better. The ability to work hard and learn creates internal satisfaction, but robocampus has two avenues which push people to try harder. How do we convince ppl to be involved in it, companies not to squash it. People companies, educators, governments.Humanity advances significantly and begins building a large variety of robots to solve everyday tasks. A society of innovators results, fewer manual labor jobs.
  14. How to keep excitementPublic votePublic imageRelease of cool videos etc
  15. Why should companies care?International PRNetworking -meet people -find new employees -salesKnowledge transferShow off alittle
  16. Why do educators care?Free knowledgebaseFree Resources for researchEstablish themselves in fieldRecruit StudentsGenerate PartnershipFree knowledgebase  They will have access and connections to other educators and like the students will be able to move up in the field quickly, gaining respect and income based on their intellectual and pedagogical abilities, unbound by the bureaucratic and unionized structures of the public education system in a control system.Free Resources for researchRecruit StudentsGenerate Partnerships  Educators will have access to new tools and a way to visually lead their teams in a learning environment. The line between them and students will be blurred as students are constantly moving up and teaching other students, therefore the teachers will have access to great human capital for collaboration.Establish themselves in field  Through this field they will have the same opportunity as students to step back and be seen as an example of what it means to be a robotics genius.
  17. So why is this valuable to us.Our company will have access to fresh new talent as it emerges. Think of the value propostions of facebook and google. These are platforms that offered an enormous gift to the world and have capitalized on it immensely. This is about a culture of giving, where we do not demand an immediate return to please stockholders, but are willing to wait and give freely in the expectation that we will be rewarded exponentially in ways that are not immediately quantifiable. In bridging the gap between the relatively effete open source robotics community and the powerful control ecosystem, we are putting ourselves at the center of major change that is due to occur in the world of open source, and are well positioned to ensure the security, profitability, and sustainability of the robotics ecosystem well into the future. This open silo has the potential to go south without a central control that is careful to only interject on creativity when it is harmful. By allowing for this emergent ecosystem to grow and thrive we will also be taking care to keep it from getting out of hand. For instance, if a user begins to acquire the ability to hack and control other robots, or build dangerous killer robots for himself, we will retain the ability to close them out of our system and improve our security based on these breaches.
  18. Our dream team of managers would complement our own skills, which are organizational and executive big picture skills. We are experienced in working with a large variety of different talents and positioning them for optimal business execution. Our managers would have to cover the full spectrum of both leadership talent and specific skills. They would need to be able to pick up the baton and run with it in ambiguous situations involving unexplored combinations of paradigms. They must be fast and effective at turning art into science and refining it as time goes on.More specifically, we would need managers with experience in building and managing engineering teams (such as Lockheed Martin’s Skunk Works projects). These managers would need to be visionary outside of the box thinkers capable of diving down to the minute technical details and managing world class talent. We would need online educational experts who have experience in tutoring and fostering a compelling, competitive, and creative online platform for degree oriented learning. These educators would need to be experienced in psychology to grasp the fundamentals of memory, saliency, and human cognitive development. We would need them to develop learning programs which touched on all the key elements of mental development in each robotic scenario.Another dream manager would be the game developer in charge of fostering team structures in a massive multiplayer online role playing game such as world of warcraft, minecraft, or Zon (an online game for learning Chinese). Such an expert would need to be familiar with robot MMORPGs such as Perpetuum, and know how to relate the educational side with the building side of things. For the rollout and management of the Metalympics, we would covet the talents of a manager in large scale media projects and the sports industry. This project could end up having its own television channel streaming online to live viewers (see Seoul’s channel 46, the Starcraft channel), and we would need to manage the media buzz that would surround the project early on. We would effectively be building our own brand, with a large number of sub brands who are the teams and the players. For the projects to be helpful to the world and incorporate real problems we would bring in experts who have managed humanitarian and political issues around the world and have a firsthand knowledge of the most pressing problems around the world that could be solved by technology and robotics. For instance, an environmentalist familiar with the BP oil spill who is able to explain exactly what the source of the spill looks like and what needs to be done mechanically to seal it off, as well as which species have been affected, etc.Our dream team would get to deal with many cultures and have to understand the way our brand is coming across around the world. Do they see us as an American ploy trying to harvest foreign talent? We want to ensure that our project is shown to be global and is for the good of the planet and humanity as a whole, and therefore we would need eperts experienced in intercultural projects such as the Olympics, and the rules and norms which are carried with such an event.
  19. The age of open source is upon us, money and ideas are being shared across borders like never before and the world communicates in one language. Regardless of what this language ends up being, it will incorporate increasingly complex terms from genetics, robotics, and environmental science into the everyday vernacular. People have more access to more knowledge than ever before. Therefore it is imperative that we catch this wave lest we be crushed under it.By building our platform, we are not only helping to accelerate this trend in the world of robotics, but ensuring that we will be able to take part in it as a central company. There is no reason that people should work on projects which don’t add to the greater good or their own knowledge. Allowing access to more reproducable items will ensure that new projects compliment already existing ideas and are reliable to be built upon.Someday we want to build satellites that will bury us on the moon. There are a large variety of materials in space that could be sold for a high price and put to use in this world. The key to these functions of space travel, subterranean, subaquatic, and subarctic exploration and exploitation lie not in sending humans into dangerous situations but in constructing robots which are repeatable and effective at doing what we want them to and fulfilling our dreams for a better humanity.
