JasonDover,directorof product line management,KEMPTechnologies,looksathow startupsand
microservicesare shakingupthe worldof enterpriseITandhow the traditional industryplayer are
responding.
In today’stechnologyecosphere,small,nimble service andproductconsumptionmodelsare
becomingmore commonplace.Thisongoingindustryshiftopensthe doorforhungryupstartsto
come in andshake up the space – where transparency, agilityandtrue value propositionare prized
above all.So,howcan these up-and-comingenterpriseITcompaniesharnessthismomentumand
adapt to thisrise of microservicesarchitecture?
Well,let’slookatwhere thisisalreadyplayingout.Mostrecently,HewlettPackardsplitits
operationsintotwoseparate corporate entities.HPEnterprise will be focusingonserver, software,
storage,networking,andassociatedservicessales,while HPInc.will sell printersandPCs.
Speculationisthatthisunbundledapproachatthe businesslevel will helpHPtobe more nimble by

PayPal alsopartedwaysearlierthisyeartoallow bothcompaniesto,“have a sharperfocusand
greaterflexibilitytopursue future success”,while Symantecismovingaheadwithitsspin-off of
VeritasintotwopubliclytradedcompaniesbyJanuary2016.
A recentsurveybyMuleSoft, whichinvolvedseveral hundredITdecisionmakers,revealedthat66
percentof respondentsfoundthatmicroserviceswillbe “important”or“veryimportant”to their
businessstrategyinthe next12 months.Clearly,disaggregationorunbundlingisbecomingmore
commonplace forlegacyorganisationsattemptingtomaintaina competitivestance withstartups,as
the days of monolithicapplicationsuitesandnetworksolutionsofferedbylegacyvendorsare
numbered.
There are three core reasonswhyenterprise ITisinthe midstof great disruption:
* IT agility –Modularityand just-in-time deliveryof servicesare increasinglyseenasessentialsin
allowingforthe optimal use of technologytomaintaincompetitiveedge.
* Simplifiedscalability –The abilitytoadapt to customergrowthandneeds – whetherrelyingona
traditional datacentre approach,publiccloudorsoftware-as-a-service(SaaS) –basedonreal time
data helpsbusinesseswininthe marketplace.
* Deploymentflexibility –Providingthe bestenvironmentandsupportingelementsforanindividual
applicationorcustomeruse case withoutbeingfetteredbythe infrastructure orinflexiblevendor
modelsenablesdifferentiatingservicedelivery.
Breakingthe moldof vendorlock-inanda one-sizefitsall approachwithinthe modernITlandscape
isproducingtechnologiesthatcanbe consumedina more flexibleandopenmanner,asCIOsand
technologydirectorsremainunderimmense pressure tokeepefficiencyhighwhile still harnessing
technologytodrive the businessforward.Accordingly,Ianticipate thatthe companieslistedbelow
will be catalystsforthistrendand will likelyseelargerfuture fundingrounds:
2. * Docker– Poisedtobe the monolithicenterprise hypervisorkiller,Docker’sopenandapproachfor
deliveringandrunningdistributedapplicationsputsthemina positiontocontinue disruptingthe
marketand enablingmore efficientclouddesigns.
* MuleSoftandAppDynamics –Asmicroservicesarchitecturebecome more prevalent,solutionsthat
allowforthe visualisation, trackingandgovernance of these will alsobecome arequirementforan
increasingnumberof enterprises.Companiesthatidentifythese opportunitiesasnew modelstake
shape,like MuleSoftandAppDynamics,will have anopportunitytocontrol theirownfate.
* Hortonworks – Thisisan OpenEnterprise Hadoopsolutionthatreliessolelyonopensource
componentsandonthe opencommunity,asopposedtoproprietaryextensions,allowingcustomers
to benefitfromthe latestcommunityinnovationsandavoidlockinto vendor-specificanalytics.
In the end,start-ups,youngcompaniesandevenoldercompanies,are reallybestpreparedmoving
forwardif theyemphasize creatingvalue,havingflexibilityanddrivinginnovation.Theseare the
traitsthat will continue tocharacterise today’sbusinessesandare re-imaginingthe waythatthey
deploytheirITinfrastructure. And,forthose CIOsandnetworkadministratorswhohaven’tyet,now
isthe time toget onboard.
