HVEM ER JEG?
Jeg hedder Johann M. Kjartansson, men mine venner kalder
mig Jói. Jeg er en 29 år gammel Islænding, nyuddannet
(M.Arch) fra Arkitektskolen i Aarhus. Udover arkitektur
Venlig hilsen
Johann Magnus Kjartansson

JOURNEYS BETWEEN CITY AND HARBOUR
modified it in a way that in general, the city is allowed to grow out to
the harbour space and at 4 specific areas the two enteties merge in
a sequence between the two. In these pin-pointed areas, based on
registrations of structure, flow/volumes, limits and spatial character and
activities on each side, a passage is created where city and harbour
merge in a sequence between the two. The resault is four different
journeys where one experiences a journey between the logic of the
city and the logic of the harbour.
7. Perspective from platform +01
A JOURNEY BETWEEN CITY AND HARBOUR
The structure is seen as a shared harbour surface with the market
on the city side, the cruise docking on the sea side, flanked by the
shared street structure. The harbour courtyard opens up to the city and
creates a new passage between city and harbour. The originial idea
behind the existing customs building, with a covered harbour space,
the docking and the road, is redesigned to merge instead of seperate
the harbour from the city. The city gaines a new courtyard, not a city
courtyard bounded by vertical walls, but a harbour courtyard bounded
by horizontal surfaces.
9. “To approach the coast implies a certain
sense of distance, and maybe arriving

may be in fact the most interesting thing”

OPEN SCRIPT STORYBOARD
The main goal of the Open Script course was to create
an architectural concept from a series of abstract narrations, creating storyboard that would be the base of
the building program. Divided into scripts focusing on
tempo/rhythm, atmosphere and context. Another focus
of Open Script was learning methods of teamwork and
was the whole project created in collaboration with a
fellow student.

THE EXCAVED SCHOOL TO NEST IN
By adapting the concepts and spatial qualities of the
aggregate scripts, a design proposal for a new School
of Architecture in the post-industrial area of the Ceres
factory in Aarhus was created. The gradient grid system
from the atmospherescript model was used to create a
flexible frame for a building and a landscape concept.
The temposcript was used to create an interior void
around a functions core with the buildings main flow
artery, by excaving the 3 dimensional grid system. The
resault is a school with a central public flow, a sculpural
central core visable from everywhere within, and floor
spaces with flexible gradient boundaries that the users
can nest themselves to their specific activities.

14. USER STRATEGY
PERMANENT USERS
The gap is surrounded by
to areas, The IT school and
dwellings, Families and Students
are the main users in the gap.
Our design proposal focuses on
their needs, and performs their
relation to the gap.
INTERMITENT USERS
The second group of users are
the people walking or biking
a long the canal towards the
Metro Station, Schools or Dormitories. As well all the people
that sails in cayaks or skates in
the winter: the main to activities
of the canal.
CANAL ACTIVITIES
Orestad canals are an active part
of the life in the area, out proposal
develops the existing activities, and
proposes new ways of using the
canal.

INTERACTION IN A CITY CANAL SPACE
The canal takes the identity of the buildings that surround it, but by itself is a long stream of water
which doesnt give opportunities for users to interact, in some parts the canal becomes interesting
by buildings that give another atmosphere, but in between them are breaks where nothing happens.
We accept the canal as a void in the city; a long strong perspective space that joins the buildings and
emphasizes the concept of area. Every part of the canal has it´s own character and reacts according to
the buildings and the landscape that surround it.
Plan of Canal proposal
16. PLAYGROUND PLATFORM
The playground platform generates a cross interaction in the canal, the families, kids and visitors of the
dwelling side of the canal are provided with a dynamic and playfull space that is specifically designed
to bring activities and flow towards the water.
IT SCHOOL PLATFORM
Our proposal introduces different devices for
approaching the water, these elements provide accessibility and furbish the existing platform keeping
it´s qualities and improving with shelters which the
IT students can use for, studing, relaxing, sitting, or
hanging around in contact with the water.
