Dear Readers:
PSI Process and Equipment a leading
manufacturers’ Rep Company focused
on addressing the area’s most
challenging water issues, has been
awarded contracts to supply all
stainless steel NOVA Disk Filters for the
tertiary treatment of wastewater prior to
ultraviolet (UV) disinfection at two New
Jersey wastewater treatment plants.
The
new
NOVA
Disk
Filters
manufactured by Water Technologies
of Tampa Florida, are key to the
success of the facilities to meet the
local regulatory limits for discharge.
The NOVA Disk Filter uses the
patented concept of ‘dynamictangential filtration,’ an innovative
approach to applying disk filter
technology for tertiary treatment. This
product filters effluent from the plant
process in order to remove suspended
solids. Through the patented process
the filter’s disks are in continuous
rotation forcing the filtration to occur at
angles less than 90°, allowing for
higher capacity and efficiency. The
Ultrascreen® Disk Filters were
selected based on NOVA’s smallest
footprint, all stainless steel media
instead of fiber/cloth, less than 1%
reject, operator friendly design, longer
life, lower maintenance, and local PSI
commitment to service and support.

2. NOVA DISK FILTERS
Nova Disk Filters are used for the tertiary treatment of
wastewater, water reuse, polishing, Total Suspended
Solids reduction (TSS) and primary effluent. PSI is the
authorized distributor in the New York/New Jersey area,
providing engineering support, start up, and service.
collection well and exits through the outlet pipe. The wet
edge of each disk is sealed to form a positive barrier to
prevent filtered effluent from mixing with the influent. The
integrity of the effluent is assured. Another benefit of the
Ultrascreen® is performance optimization. Rotational
disk speed, wash cycle timing, and the level of fluid in
the feed zone are all variable. The Ultrascreen® is
therefore the right choice for all types of treatment plants
and operating conditions. Performance optimization like
this is unique to the Ultrascreen Disk Filter. Installation of
the new Nova Disk Filter systems in New Jersey began
in 2013 with both facilities planned to be in operation
before summer 2014.
Two New Jersey facilities planned to be in operation
before summer 2014.

When the influent level in the feed box rises to a preset
limit, a sensor actuates operation of the backwash
system, with no interruption to the filtration process. Each
disk has a dedicated spray header for efficient washing.
The backwash reject from each set of disks is collected
in a common 304 or 316 stainless steel trough, it then
exits the filter through a stainless steel drain and returns
back to the head of the plant or to the biological process.
Typically, less than 1% of the
filter influent flow is rejected.
The Ultrascreen® also uses
precision woven stainless
steel as a filtration medium,
thus eliminating the need to
change filter cloths. The
stainless steel weave also
allows the Ultrascreen® to
handle higher hydrostatic heads which translates into
more efficient use of the total available filtering surface,
and lowering the overall footprint. The influent flows into
the filter between each pair of disks, then the flow passes
through the media. Next, the filtered water freefalls into a

PSI Process and Equipment provides support to the
New Jersey Water Environment Association Mini
Workshop Committee for seminar entitled “Conserving
your Wastewater/Potable Water Budget Dollars” on Jan
14-15, 2014. There are three locations, one each in
North, Central and South New Jersey. There are a total
of 12 hours TCH credits for all “S”, “C”, “T”, “W”, &
“N”NJDEP Licenses. Mr. Denis Rehse, Mr. Roger
Parkhurst and Mr. John Corkery will be presenting Disk
Filter Technology “Dynamic-Tangential Filtration,” an
innovative approach to applying disk filters for tertiary
treatment of plant effluent. Contact the NJWEA web site
to register.
PSI Process and Equipment will be exhibiting at the New
York Water Environmental Association’s 86th Annual
Convention Feb 4-6, 2014 located at the NYC Marriott in
Times Square, New York City.
