Teaching,
                                              Ireland
                                              Historical
Did you know that in Ireland, a long time ago, it was
against the law under English rule for an Irish man or
woman to be a teacher? But, the Irish have always had
a love of learning, so they did whatever they could to
educate their children. They created secret places
where teachers could teach their students in safety.
These became known as "Hedge Schools" because
they were often tucked away under hedges in the
countryside. Other secret places were under ruined
walls, in dry ditches by the roadside, or in old barns.
Most of these schools didn't have books, paper or
pencils, so the children learned their lessons by
listening to the teacher and then repeating the words of

history, traditions, mathematics, even languages such
                                              as Latin and Greek!

Broken Heart
                                              Universal
                                              Present/Past
How long will it be before you can get through your
daily routine without feeling the wave of pain sweep
over you, without sensing that knot in the pit of
your stomach, without dwelling on what went
wrong? If these are some of the questions you are
asking yourself, you are not alone. A broken heart
can cause such an intense reaction that many of us
feel our lives have been completely stripped of
meaning. Jobs, hobbies, and friends no longer hold
any joy for us. In fact, some even experience
physical pain with a tight chest, nervous stomach,

we have all heard over the years, but do you really
have to wait for time to heal these wounds?
Absolutely not. There are exercises that you can do
to experience remarkable relief to your pain. They
were developed by people who have been in this
pain and sought a better way to heal.

Prostitution

Prostitution was not a crime in the 19th century, and

after battles and offer their services to the generals
as nurses. The “nursing,” however, frequently

                                               female help.
The slang word for prostitute, hooker, is generally
thought to have originated during the Civil War. For
generations, rumors claimed that Union Gen.
“Fighting Joe” Hooker had inspired the nickname

Flintstones
                                              Hollywood, USA
                                              1960-1966
The Flintstones is an animated American television
sitcom that ran from September 30, 1960 to April 1,
1966 on ABC. Produced by Hanna-Barbera
Productions, The Flintstones is about a working class

Joseph Barbera disavowed these claims in a separate
interview, stating that "I don't remember mentioning
"The Honeymooners" when I sold the show, but if
people want to compare "The Flintstones" to "The
Honeymooners," then great. It's a total compliment.
"The Honeymooners" was one of the greatest shows
ever written."[1] Its popularity rested heavily on its
juxtaposition of modern-day concerns in the Stone Age
                                              setting.[2][3]

Storytelling
                                              Ireland
                                              Present
Ireland is famed throughout the world for the art of
storytelling. The seancaithe and scéalaí, the Tradition
Bearers and Storytellers, passed the old stories down
through the generations. Today, in the 21st Century,
there has been a revival of the ancient art. Founded in
2003, Storytellers of Ireland / Aos Scéal Éireann is an
All-Ireland voluntary organisation with Charitable Status.
Our aim is to promote the practice, study and
knowledge of oral storytelling in Ireland through the
preservation and perpetuation of traditional storytelling
and the development of storytelling as a contemporary
art. We aim to foster storytelling skills among all age
groups, from all cultural backgrounds. We also aim to

explore new contexts for storytelling in public places –
in schools, community centres and libraries, in care
centres and prisons, in theatres, arts centres and at
festivals throughout the entire island of Ireland.
Storytelling is an intimate and interactive art. A
storyteller tells from memory rather than reading from a
book. A tale is not just the spoken equivalent of a
literary short story. It has no set text, but is endlessly re-
create in the telling. The listener is an essential part of
the storytelling process. For stories to live, they need
the hearts, minds and ears of listeners. Without the
                                              listener there is no story.

from a room in a Capel Street building belonging to
Dublin City Corporation. It all started when it was
awarded a 2 week licence during the celebrations of
Dublin’s first 1000 years. Run by a group of people
headed by radio enthusiast Fergus Lynch it quickly
became very popular for its mix of programmes which
were varied. Many personalities from the world of
entertainment, journalism and politics hosted their own
half hour and one hour programmes. Nell McCafferty’s
programme comes to mind as one of the funniest of its
kind with “sisters doing it for themselves”
The group then looked for a longer licence and was

playing live. There was a very popular two-hour

Shannon began her own recording career in 1989,
working with producer John Dunford and musicians
such as Adam Clayton, Mike Scott and Steve Wickham.
The work with Scott and Wickham led to Shannon's
joining their band, The Waterboys. Shannon was with
the band for eighteen months, and contributed both
accordion and fiddle to their Room to Roam album. Her
first world tour was with The Waterboys. Like Wickham,
she left the group when Scott and group member
Anthony Thistlethwaite wanted to move the band back
to a more rock and roll sound.

The Story Of Ireland
                                              O'Brien Press
                                              Present
We are going on a long, mysterious journey to find out
what we can about the island of Ireland.
The Story of Ireland begins ‘After the Ice’ and lasts
9,000 years. It tells the story of the whole island and its
                                              people.
The book’s 27 chapters chronicle invasions, wars,
Christianity, famine and a divided island, mixed with
tales of Celtic head hunters, mysterious stone tombs,
the Vikings, the black death, life in castles, the Titanic
tragedy, music, mobiles and computers. When it ends a
                                              new story is just beginning.

and visual jokes on each page, the history of Ireland is
presented in an engaging and readable manner.
The Story of Ireland recounts the entire history of
Ireland from the ice age to the present day, ties in with
the school curriculum, and is excellent for school
projects - this is one book that no library or classroom
                                              should be without.

Irish generally prefer direct eye contact. People who
avoid eye contact may not be perceived as trustworthy.
The Irish are enthusiastic conversationalists and
debaters. A wide range of topics may be open to
discussion, including religion and politics. The best
policy, however, is to wait for your Irish companions to
bring up these two subjects; be prepared to hear very
strong and often confrontational opinions and be aware
that both subjects are highly contentious in Ireland due
to the country's history of invasion [see Introduction to

they are sincere and informed. If they're not, you could
be seen to be arrogant. The Irish are extremely proud of
their history and expect visitors--particularly the
English--to appreciate their years of suffering, conflict
and victory as a Republic. If you are English, be
prepared sometimes for a frosty welcome, though this
can usually be overcome with sincerity and good
conversation. The Irish do not stand for arrogance of

                                              Past and present
Ireland has been inhabited since 8000 BC when the
climate had become more hospitable following the
retreat of the polar icecaps of the latest ice age.
Celtics started coming to the island in the 6th century
BC, where language and cultural exchanges were made
                                              in Ireland.
In the year 432 AD, St. Patrick arrived and transformed
Irish society by introducing the Roman alphabet, and by
                                              converting the Irish to Christianity.
Ireland was invaded by the Vikings in the 8th century
AD who remained for two hundred years. It was the
Vikings who founded Dublin in the year 988.

many areas remained in Irish hands until the 16th
                                              century.
A great famine occurred in Ireland between the years
1845 and 1847. During that time 1.5 million Irish died,
and about one million emigrated to the United States,
                                              France, Switzerland and Canada.
In 1922, 26 Catholic counties of Ireland gained
independence from the United Kingdom. The remaining
six counties remained in the UK and became Northern
                                              Ireland, which was mostly Protestant.

Storytelling
                                              Worldwide
                                              Ongoing
Since people began to communicate with each other,
"Tell me a story" has been a request of both children
and adults. Storytelling is one person telling others of
something. The story can be of a real event or it can be
made up. Storytelling is often a part of our everyday
                                              conversations.
It is one of the earliest forms of folkart, it probably first
consisted of simple chants that praised the dawn,
expressed the joy of being alive, and were used to ease
the drudgery and boredom of laborious tasks. Later the
storyteller became the community entertainer by
combining their stories with poetry, music, and dance.
The storyteller also evolved into the group historian.

This was the beginning of professional storytelling
Storytelling during the Middle Ages was expanded into
the art of the traveling troubadour, who journeyed
across the land. They were welcomed in castle, court,
and market place. They gathered the news, conveyed
the best tales, and were expected to know the favorites
in each region. The invention of moveable type and the
development of the print publishing business led to
reading replacing listening, and the decline of
                                              storytelling..

through a person to person communication involving
storytelling and demonstration. In order to learn one
must be a competent listener. One must be able to pay
attention to what is demonstrated, remember what has
been shown or told, and then practice to gain functional

There are pack horses, pack mules and pack llamas.
                                              But how about pack goats?
Goats are perhaps the newest trend in hiking and
backpack-carrying animals, and Utah is leading the
                                              pack in their promotion.
Clay Zimmerman operates High Uinta Pack Goats,
renting goats for public use. He started using pack
goats about 10 years ago and believes their usage has
quadrupled in Utah in that time. There are at least a
dozen active goat packers in Utah, from Logan to St.

"Goats are about the friendliest animal you can get,"
Zimmerman said. "Some goats will even rest their head

He said you can forgot all those stereotypes about
goats being stubborn, stinky and unmanageable.
Goats are as friendly as dogs, if trained right, and he
believes they make great hiking companions.

that they also sell shoes in large sizes and wide fittings.
Similarly to their clothes, sizes are generous, so if you
usually take a size 9, an 8 may do you here. Wide sizes
are marked 9W etc. Not all branches do shoes, and
there is not a huge selection in those that do. The Henry
Street branch stocks most of the range as far as I know.
Prices are not great considering the quality and the
sterling conversion is dodgy, but in the last sale, I
picked up 2 pairs for less than € 30!

                                               From the devastating earthquakes in
                                               Haiti, the educational institutions
were destroyed. It will take time to
                                               rebuild and reestablish the country.
This horrible disaster has not only

                                              Dublin, Ireland,
                                              2010
SCIENTISTS at Trinity College Dublin have
discovered how two proteins interact to guide
                                              connections between brain cells.
The proteins were known to be involved in brain
wiring, and the Trinity and Oxford study has now
identified how they bind in order to tell brain cells to
avoid connecting with each other. Understanding
how brain cells make connections is important,
according to one of the study’s authors, Dr Kevin
Mitchell, a senior lecturer at the Smurfit Institute of
Genetics and the Institute of Neuroscience at TCD.

“The brain may have thousands of different regions
that have different functions, and they have to be
wired up together in a very specific way,” he said.
“If genes that specify how nerves connect up to
each other are mutated you can end up with
conditions like schizophrenia, autism or epilepsy.

   way,” he said.
“If genes that specify how nerves connect up to each
other are mutated you can end up with conditions like
                                              schizophrenia, autism or epilepsy.
“So by trying to understand the normal processes , and what
happens when they go wrong, the hope is we can get to a point
where we understand those disorders at a detailed biological
level.” The new study, published in the scientific journal Nature ,
looked at a “semaphorin” protein, known as Sema6A,
which has a role in putting the brakes on brain cell
connections and stopping excessive nerve growth.

  • 5. Teaching, Ireland Historical Did you know that in Ireland, a long time ago, it was against the law under English rule for an Irish man or woman to be a teacher? But, the Irish have always had a love of learning, so they did whatever they could to educate their children. They created secret places where teachers could teach their students in safety. These became known as "Hedge Schools" because they were often tucked away under hedges in the countryside. Other secret places were under ruined walls, in dry ditches by the roadside, or in old barns. Most of these schools didn't have books, paper or pencils, so the children learned their lessons by listening to the teacher and then repeating the words of Click

available for a price. Women often would show up after battles and offer their services to the generals as nurses. The “nursing,” however, frequently became an open door to those less honest and caring, and when armies experienced theft, prostitution and other less traditional forms of nursing, generals sometimes rejected offers of female help. The slang word for prostitute, hooker, is generally thought to have originated during the Civil War. For generations, rumors claimed that Union Gen. “Fighting Joe” Hooker had inspired the nickname by his amorous relationships. 07/10/10

Produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions, The Flintstones is about a working class Stone Age man's life with his family and his next door neighbor and best friend. Critics and fans alike agree that the show was an animated imitation of The Honeymooners with rock puns thrown in. William Hanna admitted that "At that time "The Honeymooners" was the most popular show on the air, and for my bill, it was the funniest show on the air. The characters, I thought, were terrific. influenced greatly what we did with "The Flintstones"...."The Honeymooners" was there, and we used that as a kind of basis for the concept." However Joseph Barbera disavowed these claims in a separate interview, stating that "I don't remember mentioning "The Honeymooners" when I sold the show, but if people want to compare "The Flintstones" to "The Honeymooners," then great. It's a total compliment. "The Honeymooners" was one of the greatest shows ever written."[1] Its popularity rested heavily on its juxtaposition of modern-day concerns in the Stone Age setting.[2][3] . 07/10/10

explore new contexts for storytelling in public places – in schools, community centres and libraries, in care centres and prisons, in theatres, arts centres and at festivals throughout the entire island of Ireland. Storytelling is an intimate and interactive art. A storyteller tells from memory rather than reading from a book. A tale is not just the spoken equivalent of a literary short story. It has no set text, but is endlessly re- create in the telling. The listener is an essential part of the storytelling process. For stories to live, they need the hearts, minds and ears of listeners. Without the listener there is no story. 07/10/10

The Irish are enthusiastic conversationalists and debaters. A wide range of topics may be open to discussion, including religion and politics. • 18. Story through pictures Ireland Past and present Ireland has been inhabited since 8000 BC when the climate had become more hospitable following the retreat of the polar icecaps of the latest ice age. Celtics started coming to the island in the 6th century BC, where language and cultural exchanges were made in Ireland. In the year 432 AD, St. Patrick arrived and transformed Irish society by introducing the Roman alphabet, and by converting the Irish to Christianity. Ireland was invaded by the Vikings in the 8th century AD who remained for two hundred years. It was the Vikings who founded Dublin in the year 988. In 1922, 26 Catholic counties of Ireland gained independence from the United Kingdom. The remaining six counties remained in the UK and became Northern Ireland, which was mostly Protestant. 07/10/10

  • 19. Storytelling Worldwide Ongoing Since people began to communicate with each other, "Tell me a story" has been a request of both children and adults. Storytelling is one person telling others of something. The story can be of a real event or it can be made up. Storytelling is often a part of our everyday conversations. It is one of the earliest forms of folkart, it probably first consisted of simple chants that praised the dawn, expressed the joy of being alive, and were used to ease the drudgery and boredom of laborious tasks. Later the storyteller became the community entertainer by combining their stories with poetry, music, and dance. The storyteller also evolved into the group historian. Click

that they also sell shoes in large sizes and wide fittings. Similarly to their clothes, sizes are generous, so if you usually take a size 9, an 8 may do you here. Wide sizes are marked 9W etc. Not all branches do shoes, and there is not a huge selection in those that do. The Henry Street branch stocks most of the range as far as I know. Prices are not great considering the quality and the sterling conversion is dodgy, but in the last sale, I picked up 2 pairs for less than € 30! 07/10/10
