Senate Bill 1 (SB1), passed in 2009 in Kentucky, requires the state to upgrade its standards for what students will learn to make them shorter, clearer, and better focused on preparing students for college, work, and global competition. SB1 also emphasizes incorporating technology and the Common Core standards. While SB1 stresses the importance of technology and professional development for teachers in technology usage, the text of SB1 does not explicitly mention school libraries.

Statement from Henry County Schools
• Technology a must:
• with the implementation of No Child Left
Behind and specifically Senate Bill 1, in
Kentucky, using technology in our classrooms
is a must. Students of society today are more
tech-savvy and computer literate, so it goes
without saying, that in order to reach
them, we must speak their language--their
“tech” language. . . . Recently, our school
computer lab was updated with new
computers and since has seen a huge jump in
usage.
