PASSIVE VOICE 
Joaquín Santiago Vázquez
USES: 
● We use the voice passive when we don't know who is the subject or isn't 
important for us. 
● We also use it when we want to give more importance to the action. 
(example)...> All of the cookies were eaten 
● Also the voice passive in English, unlike the Spanish, is frequently use in 
prayers. It's more formal. 
● We don't use passive voice with verbs as: go, arrive, die, because are 
verbs that don't take direct object.
STRUCTURE: 
● Now, frist we are going to see the structure in the active voice and the 
changes in the passive voice. 
● We are going to start with a easy sentence, ¡come on! 
- I drink a big beer (active) 
- A big beer is drunk by me (passive)
SUBJECT: 
● We in the last sentence, the frist change that we have seen is the suject. 
Now we see that the subject “active voice” become to C. agent, and the 
object direct is become to patient subject, ¿ok? Now we will use the 
personal pronouns: 
● (example) my previous sentence ...> I drink a big beer – A big beer is drunk 
by me 
By + -me,-you,-him/her/it,-us,them.
More examples with “by”: 
● We use the by when we write the subject, that is “pacient subject”, 
(examples) 
- Joaquín reads the book 
- The book is read by Joaquín
VERB: 
We have that know other important point for change the active voice and 
passive voice: “the verb”, now we see the formulate the passive 
sentence: 
we conjugate the verb “to be” in the same tense as the active sentense 
Put we should the verb in the past participle form. Past participle is the 
third column, (examples) go - went – gone. This last is of the third 
column. Now some examples to see the change of the verb: 
(examples) structure: “to be” (past form) + past participle 
John wrote the letter (active) 
The letter was written by John (pasive)
THE CHANGES IN THE DIFFERENT 
TENSES: 
Now we are going to see the change each tense: 
- Present simple: 
Active: John writes the letter 
Passive: The letter is written by John 
- Past simple: 
Active: John wrote the letter 
Passive: The letter was written by John
TENSES PERFECT: 
- Present perfect: 
Active: John has written the letter 
Passive: The letter has been written by John 
Past perfect simple: 
Active: John had written the letter 
Passive: The letter had been written by John
NOW, FUTURE WITH WILL AND GOING TO: 
Future with will: 
Active: John will write the letter 
Passive: The letter will be written by John 
Future with going to: 
Active: ohn is going to write the letter 
Passive: The letter is going to be written by John
MODALS VERBS: 
Subject + modal verb + be + participle 
Can: 
Active: Joaquín can dance a song 
Passive: A song can be danced by Joaquín 
Should: 
Active: You should buy a house 
Passive: A house should be bought 
Must: 
Active: Respect must be earned 
Passive: Earned must be respect
EXAMPLES, FIVE PRAYERS ACTIVE AND PASSIVE: 
I buy the toys (active) – The toys are bought by me (passive) 
They made this car in 1963 (active) – This car was made in 1963 
(passive) 
She had read this book (active) – This book had been read by her 
(passive) 
We can solve this problem (active) – This problem can be solved 
(passive) 
Juan will write a love novel (active) – A love novel will be written by Juan 
(passive)
