A. Introduction and Motivation (7 minutes)
Ask: Do you watch drama series on television? Have
you felt disliking the characters because of their
wrong decisions or actions they have done?
Okay, that is because just like real people, they are all
vulnerable and imperfect. As persons we have
weaknesses and flaws. And we can only say few of the
many situations that prove that. How about you? Do
you also have the traits of such characters?
Other than our imperfection as a person, there’s
always this one thing that causes our problem. And
that thing can be found in the situations below. Do
you know what it is?
• The homeless child stole a toy from his
playmate.
• Oliver carries thirty sacks of rice to the
granary to earn P100.
• People hate Noel who shouts and frowns at
every people he met.
• Two friends became lovers and ran away from
their families.
• Lee trains wild elephants for a living.
• Indians die from hunger and sickness.
• The cyclist broke his leg from joining races his
age could not bear.
• Terry doesn’t have a religion.
*Clue: Arrange the underlined letters to find out
what is present in all the situations given.
Very good Robert, now what do you know about
the word conflict? What does it mean?
B. Lesson Proper (12 minutes)
In chorus: Yes ma’am...
Shiela: Sometimes I don’t like Mara because she
let Clara abuse her...
Joshua: I don’t like how Superman wears his
costume ma’am...
Jeselle: Yes ma’am and we’re also vulnerable.
The students try to answer the puzzle or
question on the board, and they will come up
with the word CONFLICT.
Robert: The answer is CONFLICT ma’am.
Arthur: It means a clash ma‘am, a problem or a
disagreement.
In chorus: No one ma’am...
2. Thank you Arthur, do you think we also experience
these conflicts in real life? Who among you has never
experienced even a single conflict in his/her life?
Well now, as we consider conflict as a common
experience, we can identify them into two types and
four kinds. The two kinds are: internal and external.
What is your idea of an internal conflict? How about
external ones?
Definitely Floyd. The internal conflict as the name
suggests occurs inside the person, his or her problem
lies within himself not anything else, while the
external conflict are caused by outside forces, things,
or persons.
Under those two types, we have more specific types
of conflicts. Will you read for us the types of conflict
Georgia? Frederick? John Robin?
Thank you. So those are the more specific
identification of conflicts. Do you have questions so
far?
Now class, we are to read and discuss the story of
Miss Brill who is also troubled by a conflict, let’s try to
find out what kind of conflict she is experiencing in
the story Miss Brill. Before we start, we have some
vocabulary words to learn. We will unlock their
meaning through context clues.
Now, we’ll read the episodes of Miss Brill’s story
silently and I will ask you some questions after each
episode okay... Are you ready? Let’s read the 1st
Episode.
SILENT READING OF EPISODE I (3 minutes)
Questions:
What is Miss Brill asking herself on the first
paragraph?
What is she doing every Sunday? Why do you think
she intends to listen to other people’s conversation?
SILENT READING OF EPISODE II (3 minutes)
Questions:
What is her usual perspective in watching at people?
Are they positive or negative thoughts? Can you cite
some of her positive/negative thoughts?
Is Miss Brill longing for something already gone?
What is it? Or what are those? What things is she
missing?
SILENT READING OF EPISODE III (3 minutes)
Jerci: I think no one has never experienced a
conflict because it’s a proof that we are truly
human.
Amer: I agree with her ma’am, we encounter
problems because of our imperfections,
shortcomings and weaknesses or vulnerability.
Floyd: An internal conflict ma’am I guess is
experienced by a person within himself... while
the external conflict is caused by other things
outside oneself.
Georgia: Yes ma’am. Man vs. Man....
Frederick: Man vs. Circumstances...
John Robin: Man vs. Society...
Students ask questions or clarifications.
Students guesses the words through arranging
the jumbled letters and through the context
when it is used in a sentence.
In chorus: Yes ma’am...
Probable Answers:
Asking what’s happening or the changes in her.
She is listening to other’s conversation and
watch people go to and fro.
She intends to listen because she doesn’t have
anyone to talk to.
She sees negative things about people, criticizing
them from small details.
Yes, her youth, when she was an actress on a
stage and everybody quite knows her.
They’re laughing about Miss Brill’s fur, and her
3. Questions:
What are the two young couple laughing at about
Miss Brill? How did that conversation affect Miss Brill?
Why do you think Miss Brill wears her old red
eiderdown? Do you think she finds it hard to forget
about her past life?
POST-READING (7 minutes)
If that is her problem, then what kind of conflict does
she have? What can you advice for Miss Brill’s
situation?
Do you also compare the life that you had before and
the life that you have now? Is that healthy? Why?
