Jesus left so the Spirit could come.
•Why?
•What is the work of Christ?
•The Spirit?
•What help will you be needing this
week?
Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is
expedient for you that I go away: for if
I go not away, the Comforter will not

Let us pray to the Lord:
Lord, have mercy.
1. With boldness and
confidence, let us come before
our Father‘s throne and offer our
prayers for the Church and all
people in need through Christ,
our Lord.
2. For the Church, that God‘s
Word may be proclaimed boldly
and clearly among all nations and
that His Sacraments be properly
administered and received to the
joy of God‘s children...
3. For pastors, teachers and all
God‘s people, that the Holy Spirit
may be upon them to strengthen
them in fear and love of God, to
open their lips to confess Christ‘s
name and His resurrection
victory, and to move their hands
to works of mercy...
4. For those battling illness or
recovering from surgery
[especially___________], that
the Great Physician may restore
them to heath according to His
kind will, and that the Holy
Spirit, our constant companion,
may ease their burdens and fill
their hearts with the love of God
in Christ...
5. For the enemies of Christ‘s
church, that God provide for
their needs of body and soul, that
the Holy Spirit may turn them
from evil and bring them to faith
in Jesus, and that we may be
moved to love them in Christ,
trusting solely in God‘s wisdom
and mercy...

6. For our national, state and
local officials, all who work in
government, all who serve in
our armed forces, and all who
contribute to our general
welfare, health and safety, that
God grant them wisdom and
temperance and give them
grace to protect all who are
placed in harm‘s way...
7. For artists and musicians
and all whose work enriches
our lives, advances culture and
glorifies our Father in heaven,
let us give God thanks and
praise and ask that through
their work we may experience
the beauty of God through
many senses and give Him
glory...
8. For all who commune at
the holy altar this day, that
receiving Christ‘s body
and blood in repentant
faith, they would rejoice to
join in the Church‘s
unending hymn of praise...
--OPEN PRAYER--
9. Join our prayers and praises
with those of Your faithful
people of every time and place
and unite them in the ceaseless
petitions of our great High
Priest, Jesus Christ, until He
comes in power and great glory
as victorious Lord of all.
Through Him, with Him and in
Him all glory and honor is
Yours, almighty Father, with
Your Holy Spirit, now and ever
and to all ages of ages. Amen.
LSB 556:All
1 Dear Christians, one and all, rejoice,
With exultation springing,
And with united heart and voice
And holy rapture singing,
Proclaim the wonders God has done,
How His right arm the vict'ry won;
What price our ransom cost Him!
Women:
2 Fast bound in Satan's chains I lay;
Death brooded darkly o'er me.
Sin was my torment night and day;
In sin my mother bore me.
But daily deeper still I fell;
My life became a living hell,
So firmly sin possessed me.
Men:
3 My own good works all came to
naught,
No grace or merit gaining;
Free will against God's jugment
fought,
Dead to all good remaining.
My fears increased till sheer despair
Left only death to be my share;
The pangs of hell I suffered.
ALL:
4 But God had seen my wretched
state
Before the world's foundation,
And mindful of His mercies great,
He planned for my salvation.
He turned to me a father's heart;
He did not choose the easy part
But gave His dearest treasure.
Solo:
5 God said to His beloved Son:
"It's time to have compassion.
Then go, bright jewel of My crown,
And bring to all salvation.
From sin and sorrow set them free;
Slay bitter death for them that they
May live with You forever."
Women:
6 The Son obeyed His Father's will,
Was born of virgin mother;
And God's good pleasure to fulfill,
He came to be my brother.
His royal pow'r disguised He bore;
A servant's form, like mine, He wore
To lead the devil captive.
Men:
7 To me He said: "Stay close to Me,
I am your rock and castle.
Your ransom I Myself will be;
For you I strive and wrestle.
For I am yours, and you are Mine,
And where I am you may remain;
The foe shall not divide us.
Women:
8 "Though he will shed My precious
blood,
Me of My life bereaving,
All this I suffer for your good;
Be steadfast and believing.
Life will from death the vict'ry win;
My innocence shall bear your sin,
And you are blest forever.
Men:
9 "Now to My Father I depart,
From earth to heav'n ascending,
And, heav'nly wisdom to impart,
The Holy Spirit sending;
In trouble He will comfort you
And teach you always to be true
And into truth shall guide you.
All:
10 "What I on earth have done and
taught,
Guide all your life and teaching;
So shall the kingdom's work be
wrought
And honored in your preaching.
But watch lest foes with base alloy
The heav'nly treausre should destroy;
This final word I leave you."

Jesus Promises to Send His
Holy Spirit, the Helper
Isaiah 12:1-6
The LORD Is My Strength and My
Song
12 You will say in that day:
―I will give thanks to you, O LORD,
for though you were angry with me,
your anger turned away,
that you might comfort me.
2 ―Behold, God is my salvation;
I will trust, and will not be afraid;
for the LORD GOD is my strength and
my song,
and he has become my salvation.‖
3 With joy you will draw water from the
wells of salvation.4 And you will say in
that day:
―Give thanks to the LORD,
call upon his name,
make known his deeds among the
peoples,
proclaim that his name is exalted.
5 ―Sing praises to the LORD, for he has
done gloriously;
let this be made known in all the
earth.
6 Shout, and sing for joy, O inhabitant of
Zion,
for great in your midst is the Holy
One of Israel.‖
James 1:16-21
Testing of Your Faith
16 Do not be deceived, my beloved
brothers. 17 Every good gift and every
perfect gift is from above, coming down
from the Father of lights with whom
there is no variation or shadow due to
change. 18 Of his own will he brought
us forth by the word of truth, that we
should be a kind of firstfruits of his
creatures.
Hearing and Doing the Word
19 Know this, my beloved brothers: let
every person be quick to hear, slow to
speak, slow to anger; 20 for the anger of
man does not produce the righteousness
of God.21 Therefore put away all
filthiness and rampant wickedness and
receive with meekness the implanted
word, which is able to save your souls.
John 16:5-15
The Work of the Holy Spirit
5 But now I am going to him who sent
me, and none of you asks me, ‗Where
are you going?‘6 But because I have
said these things to you, sorrow has
filled your heart.7 Nevertheless, I tell
you the truth: it is to your advantage
that I go away, for if I do not go away,
the Helper will not come to you. But if
I go, I will send him to you. 8 And
when he comes, he will convict the
world concerning sin and righteousness
and judgment: 9 concerning sin,
because they do not believe in me; 10
concerning righteousness, because I go
to the Father, and you will see me no
longer;11 concerning judgment,
because the ruler of this world is
judged.
12 ―I still have many things to say to
you, but you cannot bear them now. 13
When the Spirit of truth comes, he will
guide you into all the truth, for he will
not speak on his own authority, but
whatever he hears he will speak, and he
will declare to you the things that are to
come. 14 He will glorify me, for he will
take what is mine and declare it to you.
15 All that the Father has is mine;
therefore I said that he will take what is
mine and declare it to you.
Psalm 66:1-8
How Awesome Are Your Deeds
To the choirmaster. A Song. A Psalm.
66 Shout for joy to God, all the earth;
2 sing the glory of his name;
give to him glorious praise!
3 Say to God, ―How awesome are your
deeds!
So great is your power that your
enemies come cringing to you.
4 All the earth worships you
and sings praises to you;
they sing praises to your name.‖
Selah
5 Come and see what God has done:
he is awesome in his deeds toward
the children of man.
6 He turned the sea into dry land;
they passed through the river on foot.
There did we rejoice in him,
7 who rules by his might forever,
whose eyes keep watch on the
nations—
let not the rebellious exalt
themselves. Selah
8 Bless our God, O peoples;
let the sound of his praise be heard,
FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER (Cantate)
Isaiah 12:1–6
James 1:16–21
John 16:5–15
Jesus Promises to Send His Holy Spirit, the Helper
Though Jesus has departed from us visibly to the right hand of the Father who sent Him,
yet this is to our advantage. For Jesus—who is Lord over all creation, who intercedes for
us before the Father, who is preparing a place for us in heaven—has sent the Helper, the
Spirit of Truth (John 16:5–15). ―Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above,
coming down from the Father of lights‖ through Jesus Christ (James 1:17). The Holy Spirit
helps us by taking what is Christ‘s and declaring it to us. In the Word of truth, the Spirit
works repentance and delivers to us the forgiveness of sins, the righteousness of Christ,
and victory over the devil. For the ruler of this world is judged and defeated by the cross.
Through the ministry of the Holy Spirit, we have been brought forth to new life in Him
who is the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. Confident of our resurrection with
Christ we confess, ―Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid‖ (Is.
12:2).

Prayers Because of Jesus

Redeemed of the LORD Say So

John 16:23-33; Psalm 107:1-9
Numbers 21:4-9
The Bronze Serpent
4 From Mount Hor they set out by the way to the
Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom. And the
people became impatient on the way. 5 And the
peoplespoke against God and against
Moses,―Why have you brought us up out of
Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no
food and no water, and we loathe this worthless
food.‖ 6 Then theLORD sent fiery serpents
among the people, and they bit the people, so that
many people of Israel died. 7 And the people
came to Moses and said, ―We have sinned, for we
have spoken against the LORD and against you.
Pray to the LORD, that he take away the serpents
from us.‖ So Moses prayed for the people. 8 And
the LORD said to Moses, ―Make a fiery serpent
and set it on a pole, and everyone who is bitten,
when he sees it, shall live.‖ 9 So Moses made a
bronze serpent and set it on a pole. And if a
serpent bit anyone, he would look at the bronze
serpent and live.
1 Timothy 2:1-6
Pray for All People
2 First of all, then, I urge that supplications,
prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be
made for all people, 2 for kings and all who are
in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful
and quiet life, godly anddignified in every way. 3
This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God
our Savior, 4 who desires all people to be saved
and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 5 For
there is one God, and there is one mediator
between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6
who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is
the testimony given at the proper time.
James 1:22-27
22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers
only, deceiving yourselves.23 For if anyone is a
hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a
man who looks intently at his natural face in a
mirror. 24 For he looks at himself and goes away
and at once forgets what he was like. 25 But the
one who looks into the perfect law, the law of
liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who
forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in
his doing.
26 If anyone thinks he is religious and does not
bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this
person's religion is worthless. 27 Religion that is
pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this:
to visit orphans and widows in their affliction,
and to keep oneselfunstained from the world.
John 16:23-33
23 In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly,
truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father
in my name, he will give it to you. 24 Until now
you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and
you will receive, that your joy may be full.
I Have Overcome the World
25 ―I have said these things to you in figures of
speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer
speak to you in figures of speech but will tell you
plainly about the Father. 26 In that day you will
ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I
will ask the Father on your behalf; 27 for the
Father himself loves you, because you have loved
me and have believed that I came from God. 28 I
came from the Father and have come into the
world, and now I am leaving the world and going
to the Father.‖
29 His disciples said, ―Ah, now you are speaking
plainly and not using figurative speech! 30 Now
we know thatyou know all things and do not need
anyone to question you; this is why we believe
that you came from God.‖31 Jesus answered
them, ―Do you now believe? 32 Behold, the hour
is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be
scattered, each to his own home, andwill leave
me alone. Yet I am not alone, for the Father is
with me. 33 I have said these things to you, that
in me you may have peace. In the world you will
havetribulation. But take heart; I have overcome
the world.‖
Psalm 107:1-9
Book Five
Let the Redeemed of the LORD Say So
107 Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good,
for his steadfast love endures forever!
2 Let the redeemed of the LORD say so,
whom he has redeemed from trouble
3 and gathered in from the lands,
from the east and from the west,
from the north and from the south.
4 Some wandered in desert wastes,
finding no way to a city to dwell in;
5 hungry and thirsty,
their soul fainted within them.
6 Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble,
and he delivered them from their distress.
7 He led them by a straight way
till they reached a city to dwell in.
8 Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast
love,
for his wondrous works to the children of man!
9 For he satisfies the longing soul,
and the hungry soul he fills with good things.

  • 5. LSB 556:All 1 Dear Christians, one and all, rejoice, With exultation springing, And with united heart and voice And holy rapture singing, Proclaim the wonders God has done, How His right arm the vict'ry won; What price our ransom cost Him! Women: 2 Fast bound in Satan's chains I lay; Death brooded darkly o'er me. Sin was my torment night and day; In sin my mother bore me. But daily deeper still I fell; My life became a living hell, So firmly sin possessed me. Men: 3 My own good works all came to naught, No grace or merit gaining; Free will against God's jugment fought, Dead to all good remaining. My fears increased till sheer despair Left only death to be my share; The pangs of hell I suffered. ALL: 4 But God had seen my wretched state Before the world's foundation, And mindful of His mercies great, He planned for my salvation. He turned to me a father's heart; He did not choose the easy part But gave His dearest treasure. Solo: 5 God said to His beloved Son: "It's time to have compassion. Then go, bright jewel of My crown, And bring to all salvation. From sin and sorrow set them free; Slay bitter death for them that they May live with You forever." Women: 6 The Son obeyed His Father's will, Was born of virgin mother; And God's good pleasure to fulfill, He came to be my brother. His royal pow'r disguised He bore; A servant's form, like mine, He wore To lead the devil captive. Men: 7 To me He said: "Stay close to Me, I am your rock and castle. Your ransom I Myself will be; For you I strive and wrestle. For I am yours, and you are Mine, And where I am you may remain; The foe shall not divide us. Women: 8 "Though he will shed My precious blood, Me of My life bereaving, All this I suffer for your good; Be steadfast and believing. Life will from death the vict'ry win; My innocence shall bear your sin, And you are blest forever. Men: 9 "Now to My Father I depart, From earth to heav'n ascending, And, heav'nly wisdom to impart, The Holy Spirit sending; In trouble He will comfort you And teach you always to be true And into truth shall guide you. All: 10 "What I on earth have done and taught, Guide all your life and teaching; So shall the kingdom's work be wrought And honored in your preaching. But watch lest foes with base alloy The heav'nly treausre should destroy; This final word I leave you."

  • 8. Isaiah 12:1-6 The LORD Is My Strength and My Song 12 You will say in that day: ―I will give thanks to you, O LORD, for though you were angry with me, your anger turned away, that you might comfort me. 2 ―Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid; for the LORD GOD is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation.‖ 3 With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.4 And you will say in that day: ―Give thanks to the LORD, call upon his name, make known his deeds among the peoples, proclaim that his name is exalted. 5 ―Sing praises to the LORD, for he has done gloriously; let this be made known in all the earth. 6 Shout, and sing for joy, O inhabitant of Zion, for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel.‖
  • 9. James 1:16-21 Testing of Your Faith 16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. 17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. 18 Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures. Hearing and Doing the Word 19 Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; 20 for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.21 Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
  • 10. John 16:5-15 The Work of the Holy Spirit 5 But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‗Where are you going?‘6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer;11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. 12 ―I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

A Psalm. 66 Shout for joy to God, all the earth; 2 sing the glory of his name; give to him glorious praise! 3 Say to God, ―How awesome are your deeds! So great is your power that your enemies come cringing to you. 4 All the earth worships you and sings praises to you; they sing praises to your name.‖ Selah 5 Come and see what God has done: he is awesome in his deeds toward the children of man. 6 He turned the sea into dry land; they passed through the river on foot. There did we rejoice in him, 7 who rules by his might forever, whose eyes keep watch on the nations— let not the rebellious exalt themselves. Selah 8 Bless our God, O peoples; let the sound of his praise be heard,
  • 12. FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER (Cantate) Isaiah 12:1–6 James 1:16–21 John 16:5–15 Jesus Promises to Send His Holy Spirit, the Helper Though Jesus has departed from us visibly to the right hand of the Father who sent Him, yet this is to our advantage. For Jesus—who is Lord over all creation, who intercedes for us before the Father, who is preparing a place for us in heaven—has sent the Helper, the Spirit of Truth (John 16:5–15). ―Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights‖ through Jesus Christ (James 1:17). The Holy Spirit helps us by taking what is Christ‘s and declaring it to us. In the Word of truth, the Spirit works repentance and delivers to us the forgiveness of sins, the righteousness of Christ, and victory over the devil. For the ruler of this world is judged and defeated by the cross. Through the ministry of the Holy Spirit, we have been brought forth to new life in Him who is the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. Confident of our resurrection with Christ we confess, ―Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid‖ (Is. 12:2).

  • 15. Num. 21:4-9; 1 Tim. 2:1-6; James 1:22-27; John 16:23-33; Psalm 107:1-9 Numbers 21:4-9 The Bronze Serpent 4 From Mount Hor they set out by the way to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom. And the people became impatient on the way. 5 And the peoplespoke against God and against Moses,―Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we loathe this worthless food.‖ 6 Then theLORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many people of Israel died. 7 And the people came to Moses and said, ―We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD and against you. Pray to the LORD, that he take away the serpents from us.‖ So Moses prayed for the people. 8 And the LORD said to Moses, ―Make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole, and everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live.‖ 9 So Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on a pole. And if a serpent bit anyone, he would look at the bronze serpent and live. 1 Timothy 2:1-6 Pray for All People 2 First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, 2 for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly anddignified in every way. 3 This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time. James 1:22-27 22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. 24 For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. 25 But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing. 26 If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person's religion is worthless. 27 Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneselfunstained from the world. John 16:23-33 23 In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. 24 Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full. I Have Overcome the World 25 ―I have said these things to you in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech but will tell you plainly about the Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; 27 for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. 28 I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now I am leaving the world and going to the Father.‖ 29 His disciples said, ―Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not using figurative speech! 30 Now we know thatyou know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that you came from God.‖31 Jesus answered them, ―Do you now believe? 32 Behold, the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home, andwill leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. 33 I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will havetribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.‖ Psalm 107:1-9 Book Five Let the Redeemed of the LORD Say So 107 Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever! 2 Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom he has redeemed from trouble 3 and gathered in from the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south. 4 Some wandered in desert wastes, finding no way to a city to dwell in; 5 hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted within them. 6 Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. 7 He led them by a straight way till they reached a city to dwell in. 8 Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! 9 For he satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills with good things.
