2. Rahim - Migrating Coastlines
-Buildings should respond to more than just the perceived context? We should attempt to engage with the e.g. social
and economic issues of the context in which we are designing? Emergence allows us to draw upon these aspects in a
deeper way than usual
- We can create architecture (like Rahim) that challenges conventional ways of valuing space (for residential), not just
conventional 2 bedroom etc, we can place a greater value on architectural quality of space rather than just the floor
space
- We can also use out buildings to direct attention to new areas and use our buildings to create new opportunities
(like how Rahim’s building opens up to the desert – new land)
DAB510 - EMERGENCE WEEK 12 JOSH KIM 8304548
3. -Last weeks Issues to resolve:
1 - Needed to resolve outer skin – material and
structure
2 - Design of the interior – stairs spaces, feature
spaces like the forum
3 -Refined brief (adding realistic service spaces etc)
4 - New space planning
Resolving Design
DAB510 - EMERGENCE WEEK 12 JOSH KIM 8304548
4. Resolving Design – Outer Skin
-Sketched a rough view from the
city side of the building
- Realised I wanted a transparent
effect with the outer skin
- with the lines of the structure
accentuated
- wanted the transparency to vary
with the facets
- (can’t use glass)
DAB510 - EMERGENCE WEEK 12 JOSH KIM 8304548
5. Resolving Design – Outer Skin
- Want to use a perforated panels
(lightweight metal?)
- Varying levels of perforation
could filter the light favourably
and maximise views – some
panels towards the river will be
glass
-Would not need to brace and
support panels as much as glass –
building wouldn’t absorb as much
heat as if it was glass
DAB510 - EMERGENCE WEEK 12 JOSH KIM 8304548
6. Resolving Design – Inner Skin
- Then thought about the interior structure
– originally all transparent as well
- Realised I could add structure to both
sides adjacent to line of site and open it up
on the back face and front face looking out
to the river and city
- Could also include minor cut outs in the
roof to filter the light
- Could use a steel truss system with
concrete columns to support the levels
(and roof of inner skin)
Looking at over the
river
DAB510 - EMERGENCE WEEK 12 JOSH KIM 8304548
7. Resolving Design – Inner and Outer Skin
- Now had some structure in the
inner skin to hold up interior
space and maybe enough to
support or ground the outer skin
to it
DAB510 - EMERGENCE WEEK 12 JOSH KIM 8304548
8. Coll-Barreu Arquitectos
Note the Internal structure
- Could group the external skin
to inner building the E8 building
except the inner skin is not as
heavy or as supported as glass
and the inner structure is not as
solid as a four sided concrete
structure
Resolving Design – Inner and Outer Skin
DAB510 - EMERGENCE WEEK 12 JOSH KIM 8304548
9. -Started sketching what I wanted for
the interior
- Came up with the idea of a stair
that would wrap around the feature
forum space and be semi enclosed
(levels of transparency relevant to
concept of layers )
Resolving Design - Interior
DAB510 - EMERGENCE WEEK 12 JOSH KIM 8304548
10. Resolving Design - Interior
-Idea of wrapping around the main forum space and travelling up
DAB510 - EMERGENCE WEEK 12 JOSH KIM 8304548
11. Resolving Design - Interior
-Could travel up and meet
the inner skin – concept of
layers and how there need to
be a connection between all
the layers
- Stair finishes at 3rd level
above ground, geometry
continues in a tapering
fashion
