http://www.telfair.k12.ga.us/home.aspx County Mission Statement : Telfair County Schools will prepare students to be productive members of society by fostering a caring environment with meaningful experiences and high expectations for all. Telfair County High School Mission Statement : Our mission is to develop adaptive students who will be producers of and contributors to a complex, life-long learning society. The Telfair County High School media center staff has adopted the school’s mission statement as their mission statement.
Telfair County High School will continually strive to produce students who are able to excel in all of life’s endeavors. The staff of the Telfair County High School media center has adopted this statement as their vision statement.
School Data: Telfair County High school was built in 1959, and originally housed grades 8-12. In 1975, a new section of the high school was constructed to house grades 9-12. The old section became the middle school. Although the two schools are side by side, they function as separate campuses. In 1990, the high school was renovated to add a new wing of classrooms and to update the existing structure. In 2007, the high school experienced its biggest remodel to date. The entire school was gutted and rebuilt! New classrooms were added, athletic facilities were added, a new band room was built and covered walkways connecting the entire facility were added. A new and improved media center was also constructed at this time. The high school houses a student population of 475 students. The largest class is the freshman class, totaling 147 students. 46% of the student population is African American, while 48 % of the population is Caucasian. 6.0% of the student population is Hispanic, and 1.0% of the population in multi racial. 21 % of the student population are students with disabilities. The school is staffed with one principal and one assistant principal. Helping the administration are 50 faculty and staff members.
Come on in Ya’ll! Picture #1 shows the hallway leading to the media center from the high school. The door shown at the very end of the hallway is the door leading to the network/server closet. The door to the media center is on the right. A door leading outside is on the left. Picture #2 shows the door to the media center. Picture #3 shows the outside door seen in picture #1. Students can access the media center from the outside commons area. 1. 2. 3.
Pictures 1 and 2 show the outside entrance to the media center from the middle school. Picture 3 shows the same blue door from the inside of the media center. 1. 2. 3.
Media Center Information: This media center is 5,200 square feet in size, including all office space and storage areas. The large conference room is 832 square feet. The facility is fully staffed with one certified media specialist and one full-time paraprofessional. They serve 865 students from both the high school and the middle school. These two schools are attached to the media center by either a hallway or a breezeway. There are over 10,000 books in the media center collection. In addition to books, the media center has several hundred videos in stock. These videos can be checked out by faculty members.
Media Center Technology: The TCHS/MS media center is equipped with a portable laptop station, a SMART Board in the conference room, and several document cameras. There are three computers: one in the conference room and two at the circulation desk. There is a computer area for student use. However, since the renovations, this area has not yet been completed. There will be seven computers in this area. Also coming soon is a presentation area which will include a large projector screen and a state of the art sound system. Computer Area
This is the school’s computer lab. The lab is in a separate location from the media center; however, the media specialist coordinates the sign up schedule for the lab.
Media Center Technology Continued.. Televisions with VCR/DVD players, classroom response systems, overhead projectors, video cameras, digital cameras and portable laptop labs are available for the staff to check out when needed. The media center uses a barcode check out system.
Current Media Center Floor Plan
Say Cheese! This is the view from the circulation desk looking towards the high school entrance. The bookshelves on the left going down towards the door house the nonfiction books. The reference section begins at the bookshelves on the left. The media center’s electrical outlets are located along the walls and are also attached to the poles in the center of the room.
These two pictures show the section of the media center housing the fictional books. The entrance to the middle school is just off the right side of picture #2. Picture #1 shows the circulation desk. Notice the strange pole in the middle of the work area. Notice the empty shelf space and the empty floor space! 1. 2.
The is the circulation desk. The electrical outlets are attached to the lovely pole in the center of the work area.
Computer Station Circulation Desk Work Room Middle School Entrance
This is the work room located just behind the circulation desk. The laminating machine and die-cutting machine are housed here.
Picture #1 shows the media specialist’s office. Picture #2: This is the view of the outside of the office. The work room is just off to the right of the picture. 2. 1.
This is the inside of the small conference room. This room is sometimes used for small faculty meetings or testing. At one time this long, narrow room was two rooms divided by a folding wall. Each room had its own entrance. Now the wall has been removed, but the two entrances remain.
These pictures show the TV/Media room. Videos, televisions, and Channel 1 equipment are housed in this room. 1. 2.
This is a picture of the small storage room just off of the main storage room.
This picture shows the main storage room. The desk and computer at the end of the room are used by the technology personnel. At one time, the computer lab was in this room. The lab is now housed in another section of the school. The door to the right of the desk leads to the camera/server room.
Caution! Do Not Enter! This room houses the camera system and the network server for the school.

Media Specialist Survey I surveyed both the media specialist and the paraprofessional. Both agreed that a security system at each entrance would be beneficial. Both agreed that computers were needed for student use. Both agreed that a flexible schedule benefits student literacy. Both agreed that a media room could be helpful. Both agreed that an audio/visual room would be useful for the students.
