      p. 155-157
“Formal” Outline
Uses sentences; includes title, thesis, general &
specific purposes, & sentence outline

  Specifies support types & where to put them

  Include intro & conclusion completely
  written out

Forces ideas to be fully developed

  Balances freedom to speak off the cuff but
  also gives access to exact wording
Speaking Outline
 (also called “working” or “performance”)

Used most often

Written on 3”x5” cards/cardstock/paper

Easily handled & convenient

Less distracting
Hints for Working Outlines

1. Legibly write/type info with visible font from
  arm’s length. Multi-task speaking and shifting
  card to bottom of stack.

2. Include small amounts of info on each card. If
  subject matter is known, use main & subpoints or
  use 1 card for each point.

3. Use only one side

 4. Number-order cards - be organized.

 5. Limit number of cards - abbreviate & use key
   words when possible.

 6. Highlight, underline, or color-code info. Mark
   as reminder form emphasized points.

     Easier to follow, shows connection
