Men, Part 2

2. An Example of Manhood
Jesus as a man lived a perfect and sin-free life. We all should model
our lives in His example.
God’s standard of being a man is different from the world’s.
1 Corinthians 16:13 ESV (13) Be watchful, stand firm in the
faith, act like men, be strong.
3. Why not encourage our boys to
become Elders or Preachers?
1. How much more godly could our boys become than to become
elders of the Lord’s church?
2. To learn how to grow our boys to men we will examine how to
prepare them to become church leaders.
"I resign the highest
office in the land to
become President of the
United States.”
James A. Garfield, 20th President of
the United States of America
4. 1 Timothy 3:1-7
1Ti 3:1-7 NKJV This is a faithful saying: If a man desires the position
of a bishop, he desires a good work. (2) A bishop then must be
blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, of
good behavior, hospitable, able to teach; (3) not given to
wine, not violent, not greedy for money, but gentle, not quarrelsome,
not covetous; (4) one who rules his own house well, having his
children in submission with all reverence (5) (for if a man does not
know how to rule his own house, how will he take care of the church
of God?); (6) not a novice, lest being puffed up with pride he fall into
the same condemnation as the devil. (7) Moreover he must have a
good testimony among those who are outside, lest he fall into
reproach and the snare of the devil.
5. Sober-minded (Sober KJV, self-controlled ESV)
The original word here means of
sound mind or self-controlled.
Dads how much self-control do you
show in front of your children, your
spouse, work, etc.?
Alcohol or drugs causes one to
loose their sound mind, we must
forcefully instruct our children to
refrain from such.
I contend we can teach our
children to avoid sin.
6. Tit 2:1-7 NKJV But as for you, speak the things
which are proper for sound doctrine: (2) that
the older men be sober, reverent, temperate,
sound in faith, in love, in patience; (3) the
older women likewise, that they be reverent in
behavior, not slanderers, not given to much
wine, teachers of good things— (4) that they
admonish the young women to love their
husbands, to love their children, (5) to be
discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient
to their own husbands, that the word of God
may not be blasphemed. (6) Likewise, exhort
the young men to be sober-minded, (7) in all
things showing yourself to be a pattern of good
works; in doctrine showing integrity, reverence,
incorruptibility,
7. Of good behavior (Respectable ESV)
Literally means orderly.
“‘Orderly’ (kosmios –related to kosmos, a term for the well-ordered
universe) refers to the person who has his life under control – spiritually,
emotionally, and physically. He is not a “scatter-brain.” If one cannot
manage his own affairs in an orderly fashion (e.g., properly maintaining
his finances, being punctual, keeping appointments, etc.) (Jackson,
Wayne. Before I Die. Stockton: Christian Courier Pub. 2007. p 86)
Are we teaching our boys to manage their own affairs, maintain their
finances, to be punctual, to keep their appointments.
8. Hospitable
Literally fond of guests.
Heb 13:1-2 NKJV Let brotherly love continue. (2) Do not forget to
entertain strangers, for by so doing some have unwittingly entertained
angels.
Remember Abraham entertained the three angels in Genesis 18. Lot
had been well-trained.
Are you fond of guests? (Strangers + Christians Gal. 6:10)
A Real man never forgets to show hospitality.
9. Able to Teach (Apt to teach KJV)
Literally apt and skillful in teaching.
We are not just talking about elders.
2Ti 2:24-25 NKJV And a servant of the
Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all,
able to teach, patient, (25) in humility
correcting those who are in opposition, if
God perhaps will grant them repentance,
so that they may know the truth,
To teach requires study. Hebrews 5:11-14.
To be apt requires passion.
10. It’s Important
2Co 5:10-11 NKJV For we must all appear before the judgment
seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the
body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad. (11)
Knowing, therefore, the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but
we are well known to God, and I also trust are well known in your
consciences.
11. Real Men
Real men are self-controlled.
Real men are respectable (orderly).
Real men are hospitable.
Real men are both apt and able to teach.
