Session 1: Problem solving and visualization
Singapore Math focuses on problem solving. Experience lessons using the problem-solving
approach. Examples include lessons that develops new concepts as well as drill-and-practice
lessons using this approach. Also see how visualization is developed in everyday lessons. You
should learn more about how problem solving is an everyday thing and strategies to develop
students' ability in visualization.

Session 2: Teaching of problem solving heuristics
You will solve a few problems with the instructor who will model teacher actions during problemsolving lessons. Based on this experience, we will discuss strategies to teach problem-solving
heuristics. You will learn several problem-solving heuristics and how to teach them.

Session 3: Lesson planning with anchor task for problem solving
In this session, the instruction will work through one example where he will articulate his thinking
during the lesson planning process which is guided by four critical questions. Participants are
invited to deconstruct the process and raise further questions to refine the process of lesson
planning. You will learn the essential components of a problem-solving type lesson plan.

Session 4: Open lesson on problem solving with questioning and differentiation with Grade 2
Observe the types of questions used to enhance student thinking. Strategies for differentiation to
support struggling learners and to challenge advanced learners will be demonstrated. You will
learn how the different components of a lesson come together in a 45-minute lesson.

Session 5: Assessment strategies
There will be a discussion of stages during instruction when assessment is done and the type of
information that has to be collected. Both formative and summative assessment will be discussed.
You will learn about different assessment strategies.
