3. Acts 13:44-48 TNIV
Key Passage 44 On the next Sabbath almost the whole city gathered
to hear the word of the Lord. 45 When the Jews saw the
crowds, they were filled with jealousy. They began to
contradict what Paul was saying and heaped abuse on
him.
46 Then Paul and Barnabas answered them boldly: "We
had to speak the word of God to you first. Since you reject
it and do not consider yourselves worthy of eternal
life, we now turn to the Gentiles. 47 For this is what the
Lord has commanded us:
" 'I have made you a light for the Gentiles,
that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.'
"
48 When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and
honored the word of the Lord; and all who were appointed
for eternal life believed.
4. “Since you reject it…”
-- Acts 13:46
It is easy to find fault with
those who rejected Christ in
the Bible, but what about us?
Today we will examine
HOW WE KILL (reject) JESUS
5. Commitment Lord, I know that
sometimes I nudge you
out of the mainstream of
my life. Acquaintances
might not know that I love
and follow you. Help me
to keep you central in my
life. Convict me when I
refuse to identify with you
for fear of being rejected
or thought to be weird. I
love you and want that to
be known.
8. Newly
Converted, Paul Takes
His First Missionary
Journey
● Northern coast…above Palestine
● Out to the island of Cyprus
● On up to Asia Minor
● Jewish Synagogue
9. Paul Goes To ‘Church’
● Goes to where the people
are
● Listens to the reading of
the Law and the Prophets
● Invited to speak. He
speaks
10. The Familiar Story
of the Coming Messiah
● Time line of Hebrew history
● Our people prospered in Egypt
● He led them out into the desert
● He overthrew the 7 nations of Canaan
and gave the land to his people
● All of that took about 450 years
● In Canaan we had judges, then prophets
and finally kings, starting with Saul
● His son, David, succeeded Saul, and was
generally obedient to God
● From David‟s descendants came our
Savior, Jesus, as promised
12. And now! This message has come to us!
● The people of Jerusalem did not recognize
Jesus, but condemned him to death.
● Without legal grounds they had him executed, as
was prophesied.
● But God raised him up and we are witnesses of this.
● What God promised our fathers he fulfilled in our
time.
● Here is the core of the message: Through Jesus you
can have forgiveness.
● The law of Moses could not justify a person. But
through Jesus everyone who believes is justified.
13. The Prophets
Warned Us About
Listening to this
Message:
“Look you scoffers
Wonder and perish
For I am going to do
Something in your days
That you will never believe
Even if someone told you.”
--Habakkuk 1.5
14. The Next Day, By Invitation,
Paul Continued His Preaching:
Since the intended audience
rejects this word,
we turn to the Gentiles.
“I have made you a light
For the Gentiles
That you may bring
Salvation to the ends of
The earth.”
15. THE RESPONSE
WAS TERRIFIC!
“When the Gentiles heard
this, they were glad and
honored the word of the
Lord and all who were
appointed for eternal life
believed.”
--Acts 14:48
22. NOW THE QUESTIONS REMAINS FOR US:
DO WE RECOGNIZE JESUS?
WILL WE CONFESS THAT HE IS THE
PROMISED ONE OF GOD?
WILL WE GLADLY FOLLOW HIM OR DO
WE „CRUCIFY THE SON OF GOD ALL
OVER AGAIN AND SUBJECT HIM TO
PUBLIC DISGRACE‟?
(Hebrews 6:6)
23. WAYS TO KILL JESUS
● Reject his claims and authority
● Hide your witness
…put your candle under a basket.
● Take credit for the good stuff that
comes your way.
● Indifference
● Not giving God credit
● Non-recognition of Jesus
● Hearing, but not doing, what you
know to be right
● Diluted loyalties (Spiritual
Adultery)
24. CONSEQUENCES
OF ‘KILLING’ JESUS
● Throw away your key
to heaven‟s gate
● Squander the
greatest offer you‟ll
ever receive
● Go to hell
25. THE ALTERNATIVE TO KILLING JESUS
● Confess him as Lord
● Communicate your confession to others
● Give God the credit for blessings and strength
● Include him in conversations about real life
● Keep in touch
● Honor his body, the church
28. Commitment Lord, I know that
sometimes I nudge you
out of the mainstream of
my life. Acquaintances
might not know that I love
and follow you. Help me
to keep you central in my
life. Convict me when I
refuse to identify with you
for fear of being rejected
or thought to be weird. I
love you and want that to
be known.
29. Go and bless others.
Because, God can do anything, far
more than you could ever imagine
or guess or request through you
toward others.
