What is Ethical Consumerism?

We all think we are principled shoppers, right ? We buy the green paper towels
and pick up local strawberries when we see them. Yet , according to proponents
of Ethical Consumerism, we could be doing more and saying more with our
purchasing power.

More than a few organic tomatoes in the grocery cart, ethical consumerism is a
lifestyle choice. Essentially, it means buying things only when they are actually
needed and only purchasing from brands or suppliers whose business practices
are clear and do no harm. Doing no mischief includes fair pay practices, not
exploiting humans, animals or nature and working to keep sustainable materials
and business practices as the core business model. Ethical consumerism also
supports the use of the ethical boycott, or refusing to buy items from companies
who do not live up to these standard.

Here is a clear disconnect between what consumers reveal matters to them when
choosing a product to obtain and how those people react when it comes to the
crunch. One of the important findings of the study is that most consumers are
unwilling to produce any trade-off in order to accomplish an ethical buy . Those
who claimed they cared about an issue would not go out of their manner to
source or be eager to pay more for it and the manner consumers justified the
disconnect was equally distinct. In the instance where sweatshop labour had been
used, people perceived the exploitation of workers to be an issue that was many
times not just geographically distant, but also was far removed from their sphere
of impact. In such situations, people accepted it as just a place that is widely
frequent in which particular choices matter little.

But in spite of these arguments, the a number of advantages of good
consumerism are tough to beat:

    environmental sustainability
 superior working conditions for the workers
   reduced greenhouse gas emission
   total enhancement of the community by choosing only goods made ethically

The current need is to bear ethical consumerism to the fore so that more
consumers across the globe start shopping for products that are ethically
produced. There has been a rapid development in the rate of fair trade purchases
and consumer behavior also seems to be changing in view to ethical
consumption. thus, numerous companies have been encouraged to revolve green.
This is being done in order to encounter the consumer demand for more
transparency in production methods. Companies have also changed their
marketing strategies to support ethical consumerism.

The government is taking care that ethical consumerism be implemented on a
broad scale. But it is a collective liability. The complexity of any market, along
with the social and environmental impact of any changes to that market means
the road to a fairer system is never going to be a regular one, and requires
people at all levels, at all point along the chain from farm to fork to have a
equivalent target in mind.
