Strictly Financials 2014: Decoding Financial Statements by Gary Trennepohl
RECOMMENDATION Honorable Karen C. Umberger
1. A RECOMMENDATION for Jill Burrows
Jill Burrows is a remarkable woman. She arrived in North Conway, New Hampshire in July of 2010 and
began to immediately make a difference in her new community. In addition to her outstanding work at
Memorial Hospital as vice president, Marketing and Development, she became a respected member of the
community. She joined the Rotary Club of North Conway, is the secretary of the Mount Washington Housing
Coalition, a member of the Board of Directors of Mountain Top Music, M&D Productions, White Mountain
Musical Arts and a Deacon at the First Church of Christ, Congregational. These nonprofit organizations all
provide a much needed services to the community in a variety of venues. It is obvious that Jill is interested
in music and art. Her commitment to ensuring her community and its programs touch both those in need as
well as the young and old. Her forte is publicity and she has demonstrated time and again the added value
she brings to any nonprofit organization, by improving their access to the community through publicity in
newspapers and on the radio. She is definitely the go to person who always is in the forefront of any
organization that she joins or serves.
I believe it is essential for any employee in a leadership position to demonstrate to the community that they
care about the community. They need to demonstrate that they want to be an integral part of that
community and not just a by stander who takes rather than gives. This is an extremely admirable trait and
not one you often find when looking for someone to fill a key role in any organization. Jill’s unique ability to
become part of a new community makes her even more valuable as an employee. It marks the organization
she works for as being interested in all aspects of the community and raises the level of awareness of that
organization throughout the community. A positive image in the community, as represented by an
employee, reflects well on any organization.
Jill’s skill in marketing and development resulted in two highly successful events in which I participated. The
first was the 100th
anniversary celebration of Memorial Hospital’s founding. She led a team of volunteers
who worked throughout the surrounding communities to obtain stories from the past and present about the
many people who had served Memorial Hospital over the last 100 years. It started from the initial donation
to build the hospital by Helen Bigelow, who had the vision that our community needed a hospital to serve
the numerous summer visitors as well as the full time residents to our hospital today which serves as a focal
point for health care within a fifty mile radius. A time capsule was prepared by one of our local business and
stuffed with items which represent what the hospital accomplishes today. There is no doubt when the time
capsule is opened in 100 years the folks will exclaim how backward the delivery of medicine was in 2011.
Jill prepared numerous articles for the local paper and the hospital website explaining to both the longtime
resident and the newcomer the important role that Memorial Hospital has played in health care delivery to
our community. The celebration culminated with a well-attended program featuring hospital employees,
local dignitaries, and the Chairman of the Memorial Hospital Board of Directors and Jill speaking about the
past, present and future of Memorial Hospital. A smashing success!
The second major event was the first annual Memorial Hospital Legacy Gala, a black tie affair which was
the talk of the community. Jill once again led a group of community volunteers who planned and organized
the event. It started with photographs when you entered, a fantastic dinner and an amazing line up of local
entertainment. Everyone who attended was truly excited to have been able to participate. This event truly
demonstrated Jill’s leadership ability and her ability to motivate volunteers to spend countless hours in
planning an event on such a large scale. Kudos to her team!
Jill’s resume is filled with numerous accomplishments in every position that she has held because of her
leadership ability and her willingness to step up and get the job done. You will not find a more dedicated or
accomplished person.
Sincerely,
Karen C. Umberger
