2. BIOGRAPHY
Karol Jozef Wojtyla, known as
John Paul II since his election to
the papacy in October 1978, was
born in Wadowice, a small city 50
kilometers. of Krakow, 18 May
1920. He was the youngest of
three children of Karol Wojtyla
and Emilia Kaczorowska. His
mother died in 1929. His eldest
brother Edmund (doctor) died in
1932 and his father (army officer)
in 1941. His sister Olga died

3. He was baptized by the priest
Franciszek Zak on June 20, 1920 in
the parish church of Wadowice, at 9
years made his First Communion and
was confirmed at 18. Upon graduation
from high school in Wadowita Marcin

1938 at the Jagiellonian University in
Krakow and in a drama school.

closed the university in 1939 and
young Karol had to work in a quarry

seminary of Krakow, newly opened,
and the Faculty of Theology of the
Jagiellonian University, until his
priestly ordination in Cracow on

in the clandestine seminary of

8. In 1948 he returned to Poland and
was vicar of various parishes in
Cracow as chaplain for the university
until 1951, when he resumed his
studies in philosophy and theology. In
1953 the Catholic University of Lublin
a thesis on "evaluation of the
possibility of founding a Catholic ethic
on the basis of the ethical system of
Max Scheler". Later he became
professor of moral theology and social
ethics in the major seminary of Krakow
and in the Faculty of Theology of
Lublin.

9. On July 4, 1958 by Pope Pius XII
named Titular Bishop of Olmi and
auxiliary of Krakow. He was ordained
a bishop on September 28, 1958 at
the Cathedral of Wawel (Krakow),
from the hands of Archbishop
Eugeniusz Baziak.
On January 13, 1964 he was
appointed Archbishop of Cracow by
Pope Paul VI, who made him a
cardinal June 26, 1967, under the
title of San Cesareo in Palatio,
elevated pro illa vice Diakonia to

10. Besides taking part in Vatican Council
II (1962-1965), with a significant
contribution to the elaboration of the
Constitution Gaudium et spes,
Cardinal Wojtyla took part in the
assemblies of the Synod of Bishops
before his pontificate.

of 2000] and the millions of faithful met
Pope during pastoral visits made in Italy
and elsewhere. We must also remember
the numerous government personalities
that are encountered during 38 official

13. His love for young people prompted
him to start in 1985 the World Youth
Days. In the 19 WYDs held during
his pontificate brought together
millions of young people around the
world. In addition, attention to family
revealed in the World Meetings of
Families, which he initiated in 1994.
John Paul II promoted dialogue with
Jews and representatives of other
religions, he several times invited to
prayer meetings for peace,
especially in Assisi.

14. Under his guidance the Church
prepared herself for the third millennium
and celebrated the Great Jubilee of
2000, along the lines indicated by him in
the Apostolic Letter Tertio Millennio
Adveniente, and then faced the new
epoch, receiving his instructions in the
Apostolic Letter Novo Millennio Ineunte,
which showed to the faithful their future
path. With the Year of Redemption, the

Eucharist, he promoted the spiritual
renewal of the Church.

15. John Paul II died on April 2, 2005, at
21.37, while finishing on Saturday, and

Easter and Divine Mercy Sunday.
From that evening until April 8, the day
held the funeral of the late Pontiff, more
than three million pilgrims paid tribute
to John Paul II, even 24 hours in line to
