INTRODUCTION
On-the-Job Training (OJT) is very important to the trainee, as a chance to gain
first-hand experience and to enhance her skills. During the training days, the trainee had
the opportunity to relate and associate the real operations and other corresponding
responsibilities. It further helps her to learn and to appreciate the importance of the
different flow of repairing procedures and policies affecting the management of an
establishment. The student also develops her confidence not only in the school but also
throughout the entire duration of the training (Heathfield, 2012).
The trainee benefits from the OJT because she can gain experience that she can
use in everyday work. OJT is one of the requirements for every college students, it is the
best training method conducted for students. The OJT broadens student’s skills and
productivity. It is, particularly, appropriate for developing proficiency skills that are
unique to the student-trainee, especially for jobs that are highly important. Through this
training, the trainee develops her skills and ability especially in computer maintenance,
2
computer servicing and other computer-related skills.
The training is conducted on April 23, 2013 to May 28, 2013 with the allotted 200
training hours in De La Salle Health Sciences Institute (DLSHSI) in City of Dasmariñas,
Cavite. She is assigned in College of Medical Radiation Technology (CMRT)
Department and is given the opportunity to conduct her training in Multimedia/Audio-
Visual Room at CMRT Department. She renders her working hours from 8am to 5pm
every weekdays and 8am to 12nn every Saturday.

THE LINKAGE INSTITUTION/ENTERPRISE
Background
The De La Salle Health Sciences Institute traces its roots to a group of doctors
from the College of Medicine of the University of the Philippines and the Philippine
General Hospital who, in 1976, decided to establish a medical school to support the need
for a well-trained staff for the newly inaugurated Medical Center Manila. In consonance
with the government policy of dispersing educational facilities outside the capital city and
encouraging the establishment of medical schools in various regions of the country, they
decided to establish a medical school in Dasmariñas, Cavite. Originally named Emilio
Aguinaldo College of Medicine, the school opened in 1979 under the management of the
University Physician’s Foundation, Inc and with the Jose P. Rizal National Medical
Research Center as its initial teaching hospital.
In 1980, the foundation acquired 1.2 hectares of additional property and
construction was started for a 180-bed teaching hospital. The 4-storey hospital, the
University Medical Center, was inaugurated on July 31, 1982. In 1985, the construction
of the second 4-storey Medical Research Building for the College of Medicine started.
In June 1987, ownership and management of the Emilio Aguinaldo College of
Medicine and the University Medical Center were acquired by the De La Salle University
Inc. The College of Medicine was renamed the De La Salle University-Emilio Aguinaldo
College of Medicine and the hospital the De La Salle University Medical Center. Since
the De La Salle Brothers assumed ownership of both the hospital and the college, both
have steadily grown. In 1990, the De La Salle University Medical Center continued its
4
expansion with the inauguration of the WU Building. In 1992, the college was renamed
the De La Salle University College of Medicine. On April 7, 1994, the De La Salle
University Angelo King Medical Research Center was established. In June 1994, the
management of the College of Physical Therapy which was then part of DLSU-
Aguinaldo (now DLSU-Dasmariñas) was turned over to the De La Salle University
College of Medicine. By June 1995, the complex consisting of the College of Medicine,
University Medical Center, College of Physical Therapy and Research Services was
named De La Salle University – Health Sciences Campus or DLSU-HSC under the
ownership and administration of the St. Bro. Miguel Febres Cordero Medical Education
Foundation.
The DLSU Medical center continued to grow with the opening of the ten-storey
Teodorica Favis Vda. De Rivero Hall in 1997 and of the one-storey Jose Sotto Tantiansu
Center Institute in 1988. In January 1999, the Institute of Continuing Education for the
Health Profession (formerly Institute of Graduate Studies) was established.
In October 1999 and July 2003, the De La Salle University Medical Center gained
the distinction of being the first hospital in the Philippines to have been awarded an ISO
9001 Certification and a Certification by the TUV–Rheinland and Berlin– Brandenburg
Group of Companies.
In May 2000, the colleges under the administration of the DLSU-Health Sciences
Campus increased with the transfer of the Colleges of Medical Radiation Technology and
Nursing and Midwifery (formerly under DLSU-Dasmariñas).
Eventually, the institution’s name became De La Salle Health Sciences Institute
upon approval of the Board of Trustees in September 2007.
5
At present, the Institute offers academic programs through its four colleges:
Medicine, Physical Therapy, Medical Radiation Technology, and Nursing and School of
Midwifery.
Vision
De La Salle University-Dasmariñas (DLSU-D) is a Filipino Catholic university
established and managed by the De La Salle Brothers and their lay partners in the historic
province of Cavite in response to the needs of the church and the nation for human and
Christian education, particularly the youth at risk. Guided by the Lasallian values of faith,
service and communion, the university participates meaningfully in the process of social
transformation by forming God-centered, people-oriented, and patriotic persons who
serve as responsible and professionally competent stewards of creation.
Mission
To realize the vision, the university shall strive to become a leading institution
nationally and globally in the integral formation of the youth by offering relevant,
responsive, and community-oriented academic programs, research and extension
services, and promoting a keen sense of history, arts and culture. Following in the
footsteps of St. John Baptist De La Salle, the university shall continue transforming itself
into a caring community guided by Gospel values with a fervent spirit of service, love for
learning and excellence through a holistic formation of its members.
Objectives
De La Salle Health Sciences Institute (DLSHSI) has the following objectives: to
live up to the expectation of the community that DLSHSI is the leading institution in the
6
field of learning and training for students; and to extend the Lasallian values to non-La
Salle students.

their business attires like blouse and skirts or slacks, dress, ladies’ shoes with heels for
girls and collared shirt, slacks and leather shoes for boys. Maong pants, hugging blouse,
miniskirts, sleeveless t-shirts, rubber shoes and clogs are not allowed. The wearing of
11
school while inside the campus premises are always observed. The employees and
trainees need to avoid the use of cellular phones and gadgets while on duty.
12
THE TRAINING EXPERIENCE
Tasks Performed
The trainee was assigned in the Multimedia office to install, upgrade and fix
broken computers. The trainee learned the basic troubleshooting steps like no display on
the monitor, no power, system hang-up or restart, hardware driver installation, display
with bad quality, no sound output, operating system installation problem, and how to set
the optical drive if the first boot windows are not booting continuously. On her actual
training, she learned how to assemble or disassemble the parts like motherboard, Central
Processing Unit, hard disc drive, DVD drive, memory and other parts of the system unit.
She learned how to install the drivers and reformat the computer. The trainee learned a lot
about PC and she developed her knowledge in dealing any kind of problem on system
unit, monitor and other computer parts.
She was also assigned at College of Medical Radiation Technology (CMRT)
office to assist the secretary of the Dean in encoding important documents of the
department. She also improved her self-confidence in dealing with superiors, students
and visitors of the CMRT.
Observations
The trainee was oriented about De La Salle Health Sciences Institute’s highly
positioned managers and staff of every department. The employees also introduced the
tasks, rules and regulations of the department. The management and the employees of De
La Salle Health Sciences Institute were good to the trainees, because they treat them as
13
their co-employees and friend. The trainee was trained to follow and listen to the rules
and instructions given to her.
The College of Radiation Technology (CMRT) Department developed a strong
and excellent service. The tools and equipment in the stock rooms were neat, clean and
organized. The facilities were well partitioned so that trainees and staff can work
effectively.
The employees knew how to build a good relationship with their co-workers and
with the trainees. They had an analytical mind to do their work. The computer technician
was skillful and he taught the trainee very well. The faculty and staff, secretary and office
assistant were optimistic and sociable. Trainees were always happy and comfortable
being with them.
The trainee was very dependable in every task assigned by her superiors. The
technician noticed her efficiency in every instructions especially in dealing with
computer-related tasks. They were not able to notice the weakness of the trainee, yet she
was very nervous when unfamiliar instruction was given to her or when she was assigned
to bring important documents to other departments.
Insights
The trainee faced few problems communicating with her superior. Despite of this,
the trainee overcame her weakness by building a good relationship with her superior and
by asking questions about the task given to her. She also encountered problems in
handling tools and equipment from the department and she resolved it by asking help to
her co-trainees.
14
As the trainee observed, the DLSHSI on-the-job training program would be more
effective if the management of the institution would recognize and give special awards to
the trainees who have shown excellence in the entire duration of the OJT. In effect the
trainee will be encouraged to do their best especially in tasks assigned to them.
The trainee believes that De La Salle Health Sciences Institute is an ideal place
for on-the-job trainees because it can provide good training to the students and will be a
big help for them to develop their self-confidence and communication skills which will
be used in dealing with different types of people. Through this institution, students will
gain an experience that they can apply in their future job.

The student also develops her confidence not only in the school but also throughout the entire duration of the training (Heathfield, 2012). The trainee benefits from the OJT because she can gain experience that she can use in everyday work. OJT is one of the requirements for every college students, it is the best training method conducted for students. The OJT broadens student’s skills and productivity. • 3. 3 THE LINKAGE INSTITUTION/ENTERPRISE Background The De La Salle Health Sciences Institute traces its roots to a group of doctors from the College of Medicine of the University of the Philippines and the Philippine General Hospital who, in 1976, decided to establish a medical school to support the need for a well-trained staff for the newly inaugurated Medical Center Manila. In consonance with the government policy of dispersing educational facilities outside the capital city and encouraging the establishment of medical schools in various regions of the country, they decided to establish a medical school in Dasmariñas, Cavite. Originally named Emilio Aguinaldo College of Medicine, the school opened in 1979 under the management of the University Physician’s Foundation, Inc and with the Jose P. Rizal National Medical Research Center as its initial teaching hospital. In 1980, the foundation acquired 1.2 hectares of additional property and construction was started for a 180-bed teaching hospital. The 4-storey hospital, the University Medical Center, was inaugurated on July 31, 1982. In 1985, the construction of the second 4-storey Medical Research Building for the College of Medicine started. In June 1987, ownership and management of the Emilio Aguinaldo College of Medicine and the University Medical Center were acquired by the De La Salle University Inc. The College of Medicine was renamed the De La Salle University-Emilio Aguinaldo College of Medicine and the hospital the De La Salle University Medical Center. Since the De La Salle Brothers assumed ownership of both the hospital and the college, both have steadily grown. In 1990, the De La Salle University Medical Center continued its
  • 4. 4 expansion with the inauguration of the WU Building. In 1992, the college was renamed the De La Salle University College of Medicine. On April 7, 1994, the De La Salle University Angelo King Medical Research Center was established. In June 1994, the management of the College of Physical Therapy which was then part of DLSU- Aguinaldo (now DLSU-Dasmariñas) was turned over to the De La Salle University College of Medicine. By June 1995, the complex consisting of the College of Medicine, University Medical Center, College of Physical Therapy and Research Services was named De La Salle University – Health Sciences Campus or DLSU-HSC under the ownership and administration of the St. Bro. Miguel Febres Cordero Medical Education Foundation. The DLSU Medical center continued to grow with the opening of the ten-storey Teodorica Favis Vda. De Rivero Hall in 1997 and of the one-storey Jose Sotto Tantiansu Center Institute in 1988. In January 1999, the Institute of Continuing Education for the Health Profession (formerly Institute of Graduate Studies) was established. In October 1999 and July 2003, the De La Salle University Medical Center gained the distinction of being the first hospital in the Philippines to have been awarded an ISO 9001 Certification and a Certification by the TUV–Rheinland and Berlin– Brandenburg Group of Companies. In May 2000, the colleges under the administration of the DLSU-Health Sciences Campus increased with the transfer of the Colleges of Medical Radiation Technology and Nursing and Midwifery (formerly under DLSU-Dasmariñas). Eventually, the institution’s name became De La Salle Health Sciences Institute upon approval of the Board of Trustees in September 2007.
