6. Dilation Stage The cervix will start contracting every ten minutes for about 30 seconds and then towards the end the contractions will come every 2-3 minutes for about 60 seconds. When the cervix has dilated to about 10 cm. then it is time for the second stage.
7. Expulsion stage The woman will start to push and usually her contractions are further apart to help aid in some rest between the pushes. During this time, the physician my request that there be an episiotomy done which is basically a cut to prevent too much damage from natural tearing.
8. Placental Stage The uterus will begin to contract again and my require minimal pushing. This stage is typical around five to ten minutes long which ends in the separation and delivery of the placenta.
