Gabrielle: Alumnae Director at Springside School. Remembers being the “channel changer” for her family televisions until she was a teenager. Didn’t have her own email address until high school. I have more fond memories of me with my boom box and my walkman and then my iPod, which I didn’t purchase until after I graduated from college. Gabrielle graduated with a degree in political science and a minor in art history. Being the adventurous learner, she lowered her GPA by taking one elective course in computer science and management, which landed her a B-. Joel: Webmaster and Information Manager at Friends’ Central School. learned to read from LP album covers, had a television where you had to sit in a certain way for it to look good, amassed over 250 tapes of one band’s live performances, parents still have a rotary phone in their house (amongst plenty of digital technology), parents got cable for the first time a year ago, grew up playing with tinkertoys and lincoln logs, knows how to use a mimeograph machine, was one of the last of his friends to get a cell phone (2003), has rolled film by hand in a darkroom. has a degree in psychology and education (with elementary teaching certificate) Rachel: Webmaster and Director of Data Operations at The Shipley School. Remembers when her mom purchased the family’s first microwave - it was about the size of the oven and my mom swore she wouldn’t use it. First used the Internet in Sophomore year of college. Has a degree in communications -- not computer science.
Lead: Rachel As Dr. Ofer Zur and Azzia Zur discuss (in 2009), not all digital immigrants are technologically inept, as they fall into a number of categories; Avoiders, Reluctant Adopters and Eager Adopters. Avoiders may only have a minimal amount of technology involved in their lives and households (Ex. A landline phone and a television). Reluctant Adopters often see ways that technology might be needed in their lives, but they try to avoid it when possible. Eager Adopters have enthusiasm or a talent for technology that makes them very similar to Digital Natives. Similarly, not all digital natives are comfortable with technology.
