Retinal photomicrographs of transgenic rats carrying the rhodopsin mutation S334ter. (A) S334ter untreated eye, (B) NTC-200 parental cell–treated eye, and (C) NTC-201 cell–treated eye. The cells were injected on P9 and the experiment was terminated on P20. Brackets denote ONL. (A) ECT-CNTF–treated versus (B) nontreated eyes

The researchers tested single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) for association of AMD in a region of 14 million base pairs on chromosome 1q25-31 where a gene for AMD had been previously localized in families with multiple persons affected with AMD. Using two independent case-control populations, the researchers found that possession of at least one copy of histidine at position 402 of complement factor H (CFH) increased the risk of AMD almost three-fold.

A funduscopic picture of MPGN II–associated retinal changes (A) as compared with a normal retina (B). The longterm risk for visual problems caused by drusen in MPGN II is approximately 10%. There is no correlation between disease severity in the kidney and the eye.
Laser scanning confocal : drusen with immunoreactivity for complement C3b fragments that are markers of complement activation sites. RPE lipofuscine autofluorescence is shown in red. iC3b immunoreactivity (green) identifies vesicular like structures in drusen. Some appear to be composed of either concentric rings or a coiled structure (C). (D° Double immunolabeling of a drusen with monoclonal anti-iC3b and polyclonal anti-C5 antibodies. C5 labeling (dark blue) is diffusely distributed throughout the drusen. Light Blue labelling of vesicular profiles (arrows) indicates colocalization of the Cy2 (green) labelled anti-iC3b antibodies with the Cy5 (blue) labelled anti-C5 antibodies. E à G labelling of the same vesicular structures with a monoclonal antibody that recognizes C3b, iC3b and C3dg (green).
