 What is a Project?
 What characteristics do all projects have in
    common?

 What is Project Management?
 What skills must a Project Manager possess?

 A project is a series of activities aimed at
bringing about clearly specified objectives by
producing a set of precisely defined
deliverables within a defined time period,
within a defined budget and within defined
    quality constraints

    A. 1 man to build the walls (3 days)

 The wider, longer term development goal.
 The desired state where a needs or problem
no longer exists or is significantly improved .
 The project will contribute towards this long
term impact, but will not achieve it itself.
 This might be a government objective or UN
    MDG.
      Example:
Decreased incidence and impact of diarrheal diseases

                                           © 2012 Sheila Ash 16
 What change of benefit do we want the
    project to achieve?
 Try to include both material benefits and
positive social change in the purpose
    statement
 There should be only one.
 If you have >1 purpose, split the project into
2 projects sharing the same goal
     Example:
Increased access to, and use of, safe water in the region

                                             © 2012 Sheila Ash 17
 What outputs are needed to achieve the
purpose? i.e what will the project deliver?
 The project team has control over outputs
 Typically 3-6

     Example:
        Improved sources of safe water

                                         © 2012 Sheila Ash 18
 How will we deliver the outputs?
 Likely to be a long list of activities to carry
    out
 Activity statement should start with an active
    verb
     Example:
        Upgrade current wells
        Construct new wells

                                 © 2012 Sheila Ash 19

 Monetary Resources - ₦
 Material Resources - Bricks, Cement, Paper,
    Pens, Fuel etc
