My husband loves the great outdoors and occasionally he drags me and the kids out with him.
Now my husband is not that fussy about comfort, but the rest of the family are. We don't stay in
hotels or B and B's, this gets very expensive and we like the freedom of staying off the beaten
track anyhow.
We tend to be on a budget when the whole family get away. So we invested in a tent trailer which
is a great alternative to motels and much more comfortable than a normal tent. Basically we are
talking about a glorified tent on wheels here. So we can stay warm, dry and comfortable but still
feel we are sleeping under canvas close to nature which, is something the whole family enjoy,
especially my husband.
When we first invested in a Popup Camper, we looked carefully at the facilities each make and
model came with and eventually went for a Jayco Tent Trailer which had everything we wanted.
These trailers are reasonably priced and come with good sized beds, kitchenette, fridge, shower
and toilet and very importantly air conditioning. We also looked at other makes of camper
including the Coleman Tent Trailer. Colemans are a very good alternative to Jayco. Both Jayco
and Coleman have quite an array of models and specs. to choose from.
Tent trailers can feel quite cramped so we did not go for the smallest in the range. In the end we
chose the Jayco Baja, partly due to the larger size, but we also liked the fact that we can take a lot
more toys with us due to it's hard core bike port deck which can carry a load of up to 1,500
pounds.
There is a safety issue to consider. Tent trailers certainly award more protection than the humble
tent. We go to some fairly remote areas so there is extreme weather conditions to contend with at
times and not forgetting the wildlife to protect yourself from. I must admit I do feel quite secure in
my tent trailer.
Most trailers are foldable. This makes them very convenient to transport. They are fairly
lightweight and low when towing which makes them less cumbersome when in transit. When
considering buying a tent trailer, you can opt for used models to save money. You must get a
guarantee when buying a used model and of course inspect it carefully. If even this is out of your
budget at the moment, or you just want to try one out, you can also rent. If you are unlikely to
make a lot of use of your camper then renting is highly recommended. The other advantage with
renting is that you don't have to maintain the tent trailer which needs to be done carefully when
you own your own. If you do own one, when storing always make sure it is bone dry otherwise the
camper will soon take on that familiar damp musty smell that those who camp in tents a lot are
well accustomed to.
