Summary Of The Sure Thing By Ted Turner
"The fact that most new businesses fail is hardly a secret"(James Surowiecki). In this quote,
Surowiecki is saying that all entrepreneurs know that when they start a business, it can either
prosper or fail. Building a successful business takes time and money. However, it also takes a lot of
commitment. One has to be focused on his or her goals, and they must do whatever it takes to
accomplish them. The most important characteristic of an entrepreneur is determination because it
can help a businessperson accomplish any goals they set and build a successful business.
Accomplishing one's goals takes time, patience and most importantly determination. Conquering
one's goals cannot be done without being committed to it and willing to do whatever it takes to
accomplish the goal. In the excerpt "The Sure Thing" by Malcolm Gladwell, Ted Turner's
determination is what turns him into a successful businessman. Turner is an intelligent man who
knows his way around the business world. His ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An intelligent bargainer is able to find themselves deals that make them money. Bargainers can also
be able to trick other people into giving them what they want without the other person realizing
what they are giving up. What this argument fails to consider is that determination can bring out the
other characteristics within a businessperson. A determined businessperson will do whatever it takes
to build a business for them. Through this process, they will become self–motivated, intelligent, and
confident. These traits aid in building a successful business. Determination also makes an
entrepreneur into a risk taker who is willing to risk their money in order to build a more successful
empire. There are many other traits that create a successful entrepreneur, but determination is the
key trait that brings out the other characteristics within a

When I first entered high school, I had no intentions of playing football. My friends who played pop
warner had always urged me to play but I always decided to play baseball. One day towards the end
of 8th grade I made the decision to play football. I remember the first day of weights during the
summer, I was so nervous I almost felt sick. I knew a select few of people but had no idea how
much I was about to change my life. When everyone reported that first day, we started off by lining
up and taking attendance. I recall as I was standing there, an older burley man walked up and began
to walk slowly past each one of us. It almost seemed as he was examining us like we were the "fresh
meat". As he walked by me, he looked me up and down, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

We came into the game 10–0 and were playing in the semi–final game in order to advance to the
CIF championship . At half time we were down by twenty–one points and our morale was visibly
down. As we were sitting in the locker room, Coach Hare came in and began to walk around looking
at each one of us. He then started telling us about his surf session from earlier that day. He told us
how epic the break was at Swamis (local surf spot) and the women that were out there. He went on
for 10 minutes describing his time surfing that day. I glanced around the room with a very confused
look as well as everyone else. By the time he finished up everyone was laughing because that speech
made no sense and had absolutely no relevance to our situation. Looking back at his speech, it could
not have been a better time. He took out minds off the bad situation we were in, raised our morale
and allowed us to drive on since giving us momentum. We ended up winning the game and the
championship the next week. In that speech alone, Coach Hare demonstrated duty by motivating us
and raising morale witch was his job as a coach. Throughout my whole high school football career,
Coach Hare demonstrated all of the Army values with his coaching style. He put his plyers before
himself in all situations whether we were struggling in school, football or our personal lives, he was

Testing Is A Sure Anticipation Of Failure
Any IT solution that is implemented without proper method of testing in project is a sure
anticipation of failure. Testing is an ongoing process both formally and informally. Testing happens
in different stages of software development life cycle like in development, actual testing phase and
in post–deployment phase. The Importance of Testing: Without a well–planned testing effort, the
project might face a serious operational and executional behavior of the solution. With a poorly
tested solution, the maintenance and support expenses will shoot upwards exponentially, and the
reliability of the solution will be very tragic. Therefore, project managers must realize the
importance of testing. There are 2 important types of testing: A/B Test: A/B test is also known as
split testing or bucket testing. A/B testing is the method where two version of the webpages or app
against each other to determine which version performs better. In A/B testing two or more variants
of the pages are shown to user at random, and statistical analysis is used to determine which
variation performs better. In A/B test webpage or the app screen is taken and modified to create the
second version of the same page. This change can be simple or be a complete redesign of the page.
Half of the traffic is shown original version of the page and half are showed modified version. As
visitors are served either control or variation, their engagement with each experience is measured
and collected in analytics

David Ives Sure Thing Analysis
The play "Sure Thing" by David Ives is about two people who meet at a small café. They start
talking to each other and each time someone says something wrong, or the conversation goes south,
a bell rings and they start over. In the end, they end up liking each other a lot and have a longer
stretch of uninterrupted dialogue. This play is a challenging piece to work with as a director since
there isn't much to it. However, if one were to look at it from a film–production perspective, more
could be done. To enhance this piece, working with camera angles and background music will be the
best way to go. Since this piece is a lot of dialogue and very little movement, several different
camera angles will be needed to make it interesting. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Of course, music doesn't need to be under the whole thing. But they are in a café and cafés come
with noise, whether that be the machines, radio, or the other customers. Plus it is nighttime and
people are coming in and out of the café, so there is bound to be sound from the traffic and nightlife
filtering in. Music and background noise adds a really powerful aspect to any piece and sometimes
the lack of music makes a scene even more dramatic. However, building up music for intense scenes
can pull the audience in. For example, when Betty and Bill are really going at it and having to start
over several times (Ives 1053), I am picturing the music picking up speed and getting more intense
with each ring of the bell until it's built up to halt as soon as Betty says, "Listen, I was headed to the
movies..."(Ives 1053). This would add a comedic value to the piece that I believe the audience
would enjoy. David Ives left future directors with a lot of wiggle–room when he wrote "Sure
Thing." There are many different directions a director could go in any aspect when taking on a piece
like this. But, with any film, the two most important thing to think about are camera angles and
background music. When those are done properly, everything else will fall into place. It's a sure

Be Sure You Re Right Then Go Ahead Analysis
Sarah Nilsen, in her journal article "'Be Sure You're Right, Then Go Ahead': The Davy Crockett Gun
Craze", considered the way guns were promoted to the youth by television shows. The show she
focuses her attention to is Walt Disney's Davy Crockett series. As the industry for western films
began to slowly grow, the rate of juvenile delinquency became an issue that most parents wanted to
fix. Parents began to question where this violent behavior came from. They started realizing their
kid's interest in toys such as toy pistols. This raised questions whether the media was silently
making guns an acceptable form of everyday life. The inspiration from this issue led Nilsen to
research the topic. Her purpose in the article was to pick apart ... Show more content on

Nilsen did an excellent job making her topic clear. In the second paragraph she specifically states
what the article is about. There is no grey area where you don't understand what point she is trying
to make. She is precise and clear with her word choice. Her writing style is easy to read, which goes
along with her audience. Nilsen's audience are people who want to know more about whether the
media is influencing and blinding families to encouraging aggressive behavior in their kids. Some of
this audience could even include parents. She wants to inform readers that Disney is influencing
kids without their realization. This is why her word choice and audience go hand in hand. It is an
easy read because some of these people are parents who just want to understand the issue, and
perhaps do not particularly want to read a deep scientific article. Nilsen also had a decent quality of
research to back up her work. She properly cited her work and had a two–page work cited section at
the end. Nilsen's research was intriguing, because it is a topic that is still debated today. Her overall
organization was decent, although it felt a little

Short Story Sure Thing By David Ives
The short story sure thing by David Ives, is a play centered on two characters and one setting. The
story is about a girl, a guy, and the ability to make a good first impression. Although, there is a
saying that you never get a second chance, yet in this play you do. The writer separates each
conversation with a bell sound, which stands for the conversation resetting to give them another
chance. There are many ways to look at this play whether it represents timing, pickup lines, or first
looks, all these qualities add up to start the perfect first impression and to a happy ending. First thing
that this story portrayed is timing. Timing is an important part in everything you do whether it is
work, dating, or just living life. Throughout this story the bell kept going off because neither the girl
nor guy could get the right timing. They would say the right things but not really at the right time, or
they would say the wrong things at the right time. This part of the meaning shows us that timing can
be everything, it can make or break any situation. People always have problems with their timing
whether it's too early or too late. In this story the dialog starts off short and they repeat there scene
frequently, then as the story progresses the lines get longer and the resets are shorter, this is showing
that they are actually getting the timing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first thing you say to a person is the most important part. It really is not what you say but how
you say it. Many people try to point out all the good things like when the guy mentioned something
about him going to Harvard. More like trying to get all the good things out at the beginning to get
someone interested. Although, it is not about the amazing things you have done but what you have
in common with the other person. At the end of the story they both found things that they had in
common and it was not the bragging things but the simple

An Analysis Of The Play 'Sure Things' By Davis Ives
Sure Things by Davis Ives Analysis
In 1988 David Ives created "Sure Things" a short play One–act comedy where he explores many
possibilities of a common social daily life situation; dating. With only two characters, Betty and Bill,
common names for common people and with fine humor and critic vision, using a peculiar and
functional language the author reveals in many ways how this every day activity can have a different
outcome, depending in the moment, chosen words, characters mood, personality and intention.
In spite of being One–Act short play "Sure Things" has all elements a plot or play should have. The
setting is a café, and the first scene describes the characters as "Betty, a woman in her late twenties,
is reading at a café table. An empty chair is opposite her. Bill, same age, enters." (Kennedy, Goia
1187). The vague descriptions of the setting and characters led the audience to focus their ... Show

"The book's title is a reference to a soliloquy in Shakespeare's Macbeth that talks about how life is a
shadow of the past" ("Sure Things"). In this play the scenes repeat itself over and over again
creating a shadow of the past. In the same way the reference of "Woody Allen's movie Bananas is a
metaphor for the ridiculous nature of the relationship between Bill and Betty and a backdrop for the
scene itself." ("Sure Things"). In the movie Fielding Mellish falls in love with Nancy who thinks
that he is not good enough for her. He is not part of her social and intellectual circle, but when he
becomes an important business man she falls in love with him. The same happened in the play "Sure
Things" where seems that the only way their relationship have any option to proceed was by
correcting anything that does not work for each other. Perhaps the name of the play means exactly
that, sure things are necessary in order to achieve a good

Sure Thing David Ives Analysis
Language is the way people communicate. A person's choice of words, tone, and even body
language all make up his or her language. Language is incredibly important, especially during a first
encounter. It is said that language limits thought and thought is dependent upon language. When two
people first meet, it is their language that helps both people to form their own opinions of each other
and can make or break the bond between these two people. There are many works of literature that
show the importance of language as a major literary theme. One of these works is Sure Thing by
David Ives. This play emphasizes the significance of language in a light–hearted, humorous account
of two strangers that meet in a local café and begin to talk to each other in the hopes of obtaining a
date. In Sure Thing, Ives uses many literary techniques to portray the value of language as a main
theme within his play, including minimalism, symbolism, and repetition. In Sure Thing, Ives'
minimalistic approach to the setting is crucial to the development of the characters and the play. Not
only are there only two characters, Bill and Betty, within the drama, but there is also hardly anything
else on the stage ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Throughout the play, there is a bell that rings every time Bill or Betty say something that would
make their conversation begin to falter. After the bell rings, Bill and Betty get the chance to recant
their earlier statements and say something else that might intrigue the other person more. The
ringing bell symbolizes a fresh start and a second chance to make a good impression. This ties into
Ives' theme of language being paramount because the bell rings when Bill or Betty use language that
is not beneficial to their end goal – getting to know each other and going out on a date. However,
because of the bell, they each get endless opportunities to change their language to successfully
meet their end

Sure Thing Compare And Contrast
Even though both production's plot portrays an awkward meeting of a man and a woman in a coffee
shop, exchanging various dialogues and a multitude of conflicts associated with dating, I do not
think the actors and directors had the same purpose for these two different productions. The film
adaptation of "Sure Thing" is driven more by the setting than the dialogue. The black and white
imagery gives the film a more dramatic tone. The use of the split screen of the actors symbolized the
disconnect of their relationship. As the actor's characters began to connect with each other, the
screen also comes together as one. The actor's voices are monotone and their characters showed
little emotion or body language towards each other. The "beep" sound

Not Sure I do not believe in much aside from a few simple morals such as knowing right from
wrong. There are no moments in my childhood worth mentioning and those that are I prefer to keep
to myself. However what I can and choose to share are common experiences faced by many and that
I too have experienced such as bullying, the divorce of two parents, having to constantly move from
place to place, and always starting school as the new kid. Yet through all of it such experiences had
no effect on shaping who I am today aside from a newly found sense of independence. Growing up I
never cared nor did I worry about what I believed in because it didn't matter at least not until
somewhat recently. In fact, I still don't know what caused me to begin

Personal Narrative: So Sure The World Was Ending
When I was So Sure the World Was Ending The first time I had even heard the idea was in 2008. My
dad was in the master bedroom casually watching what I took to be the History Channel. I
remember looking at the TV myself and seeing a man standing in a beautiful garden. He was talking
about how the area he was in was the closest to what heaven was supposed to look like according to
the Bible. My curiosity compelled me and I began to watch the show myself. I decided he was right.
The area was so beautiful and as he described each component of it, relating it back to the Bible, I
was even more convinced. I stopped listening to the man for a while, and tried to memorize every
aspect of the landscape. It seemed imperative that I remember the ... Show more content on

If the world was going to end (and surly it was), I needed to know exactly what signs to look for so I
could prepare. I did this because, though the Mayans had predicted the world would end in
December of 2012, my pastor informed the church that no man could predict the end and that it was
possible the end could come sooner rather than later. I sat nervously as he preached some of the
"Signs of the Times." Everything he told us seemed to have already happened. And by the time we
had reached the year 2011, there were so many natural disasters and assorted chaos that I confirmed
to myself that the world was ending either in 2011 or 2012. There had been an earthquake in Haiti
and a tsunami in Japan. Many new terrorists were forming new groups and, though I did not believe
this rumor at all, there was talk that Obama was the antichrist. I spent hours on YouTube watching
convincing evidence about the final days. I ran into the endless string of conspiracy theories about
the government and the entertainment industry and the 1% and the Illuminati and the Masons, and it
just drones on and on. I learned the symbolism and the supposed members. I figured that if I was
going to get a positive judgment I needed to be one of the "informed". I couldn't be tempted by the
devilish music that held subliminal messages to brainwash me. Because even gospel music was
corrupted, I was to listen to near no music at all. Even all the great classical writers were evil. I

Every person's life is filled with positive and poor decisions. Society always praises good choices
but rips apart those who make bad ones. In life, it is easier to hate someone for what they do rather
than forgive and look beyond their flaws. This mindset is toxic. Humans need to steer away from
hate and focus on love and forgiveness.
In the poem Sure by Arlene Tribbia a sibling yearns for their brother despite his lousy choices. The
sibling knows all the appalling choices he has made, yet they are able to look beyond his flaws and
love him. They seek to remember the times of laughter and happiness rather than dwell on his
mistakes. Sure shows we are capable of love and forgiveness toward people who do not always

Ignorance And When Success Is Sure Analysis
In life humans typically don't try again after failing at many things. Instead they generally give up
and not coming back to it. "All you need in this life is ignorance and confidence, and then success is
sure" (Twain). In order to be able to succeed, you have to fail at something. Ignorance can be tied
into failing because when you do something for the first time you probably don't know what you are
doing. When you do fail, you should try again and grow off of your mistakes which also ties into
confidence. Being confident can relate to persevering to continue trying harder. Once you have
failed at something and persevered to continue, you have found success. Twain states that in order to
get success as a outcome you have to have ignorance. People that try something new everyday are
usually failing at something and trying again the next time. No human is perfect in any shape or
form. Therefore they are guaranteed to fail, and that's where ignorance ties into not knowing how to
do something a first time. I can think of countless numbers of times that I have failed at something
and it eventually led back to lack of knowledge. Although I never gave up at any point because I
knew that I wouldn't accomplish anything.. If I did give up, it could have been temporarily until I ...

trying hard and staying on track leads to a good success because in the end I got a good grade for the

Leadership, Entrepreneurship And Strategy For Sure Makes A...
Synchronizing leadership, entrepreneurship and strategy for sure makes a great management. By the
way even if these skills might seem pretty achievable by academic and professional education,
things become more complicated when we talk about international business. In fact global
management involve many aspect that do not require a simple preparation in a specific business
field, but it rather requires a broad preparation on different fields, such as international laws,
commerce policies and people customs just to mention a few.
Just less than a century ago, management rules were very different from now, work was mainly
composed of manual labor task, this means that a traditional pyramid hierarchy with employees and
managers loyally obedient to their top managers, was a solid structure to build a good and healthy
business. But starting a few decades ago, as work begun to require less manual labor and more
knowledge work, things have changed dramatically bringing modern management to new standards
as depicted by Peter Drucker who pointed out the importance of entrepreneurship and innovation
into the management world. A further evolution occurred in the 1970s with Warren Bennis who
stated that more than just a manager, an effective leader was defined as someone with the ability to
influence and motivate others not only to perform work tasks but also to support the organization's
values and meet the organization's goals. This is to me the cornerstone of new management, the

Two or Three Things I Know for Sure
Two or Three Things I Know For Sure Allison illuminates the fact that we as women must
appreciate each other and our beauty before we can truly cherish other forms of beauty around us.
"Two or three things I know for sure, and one of them is that of we are not beautiful to each other,
we cannot know beauty in any form"(86). We are so conditioned to see female beauty as what men
see as beautiful, that we don 't even know what it means to us. If we can get to the point where
women feel beautiful even if they don 't fit the societal ideal, it will allow us to open our minds to all
other forms of beauty. Morgan asserts in her article, "Women and the Knife", "Rather than aspiring

Society now believes it is perfectly acceptable to tell women they must look flawless, and even to
advertise how to achieve this. The website also examines the different kinds of makeup they offer,
and each one supposedly offers not only to enhance your natural features, but more so to change or
hide them. For example, the lip liner can "...change the size and shape of the lips...and also
camouflage facial lines surrounding the lip as a result of aging". Aging in women has never been
seen as a beautiful process. Allison says of her aging sister, "I thought she was beautiful. I think she
still is" (79). While Allison is at her sister 's home, she also speaks with her niece. She tells her that,
"...she was so beautiful people said the sun shone brighter when she walked out in the day. They said
the moon took on glitter when she went out in the night"(85). She then runs her hand along both her
sister 's and her nieces face and jaw line, and tells her "That 's the mark of the beautiful Gibson
women, you both have it"(86). We must be able to be beautiful to each other. She doesn 't tell her
how the boys will love her, or how lucky her husband will be, rather what she sees as her beauty.
This is what we as women all need to take as our responsibility to do. Only then can we see each
others beauty for what it is, not what it could be or what society deems is should be. Only then

Repetition in David Lves Plays Words, Words, Words and...
David Ives really experiments with repetition throughout all of his plays. Two examples of these
plays would be Words, Words, Words and Sure Thing Form his collection of plays called All in the
Timing. There are many different examples of repetition in each play. Ives repeats one certain thing
and makes this repetition mean many different things. In Sure Thing there is the repetition of the
bell, which represent how we tend to make snap judgments on people, and how we all strive for
perfection. He also uses the repetition of the words sure thing to represent how nothing in life can
really be considered a sure thing. In contrast in Words, Words, Words Ives uses the repetition of the
Monkey's typing to represent how sometimes luck gets us to where we need to be. Ives also uses the
repetition of Milton exhibiting typical Monkey behavior to show how we can repetition as a form of
manipulation
The bell rings twenty–eight times in Sure Thing. Every time Bill says something that Betty does not
find desirable the bell will ring and Bill gets another chance to woo her. Ives uses the repetition of
the bell ringing to show how we as humans make snap judgments on people. As soon as we learn
one fact about a person we base everything they say on that one fact and that it is very hard to come
back from a bad first impression. Bill's ability to gage Betty's reaction allows him to manipulate her
to make himself seem more desirable. This results in him succeeding and them leaving

Sure Thing And Hills Like White Elephants
"The real art of conversation is not only to say the right thing in the right place but to leave the
wrong thing unsaid at any tempting moment." –Dorothy Nevill
Conversation is a part of our everyday human lives. Yet, it is something that some people really
struggle with. This theme is portrayed in both David Ives' one–act short play Sure Thing and the
short story Hills Like White Elephants by Ernest Hemingway. Sure Thing comes from Ives'
collection, All in the Timing, which includes many ten–minute plays dealing with irony, timing and
language (Green). In Sure Thing, both parties handle communication in different ways. The play is
packed with irony, humor, intense characterization, and satire from the very beginning. Hills Like
White Elephants ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Since the short story is written primarily in dialogue, it makes it very similar to reading a play. The
conversation is very generalized and not specific at all, it leaves a lot up to the reader to use critical
thinking skills to determine what the story is actually about. The story starts with the American man
and Jig having a beer and making awkward, forced conversation; Jig looks over the hills and sees
the clouds and says "They look like white elephants." This is an example of the author using
symbolism; a white elephant in communication usually refers to something big or problematic, i.e.
"addressing the elephant in the room." Jig is trying to avoid the conversation about the abortion, but
she ultimately knows that it is an unavoidable topic. The motif in this short story is unquestionably
the beer; they turn to the alcohol because they are trying to avoid their real life situation at hand.
They drink large beers to fill up time so that they have less time to talk about the unborn baby and
once the American brings up the topic Jig orders more beer. While reading the conversation it
becomes apparent that the American's tone is emotionless; after all, he refers to the abortion of their
unplanned baby as "It's an awfully simple operation. It's not really an operation at all." Jig tries

What Is Sure You Can Ask Me A Personal Questions
The poem "Sure You Can Ask Me A Personal Question" presents one side of an awkward
conversation between a Native American and another person. This conversation is made awkward
from both parties. First of all, the person asking the questions clearly lacks empathy and a common
sense. They have no knowledge or respect for the Native Americans. They are simply ignorant. This
is shown when the person asks the narrator questions concerning where the narrator is from. The
narrator is asked whether or not she is from India, Apache, Navajo or Sioux, to which she replies a
firm "no". After learning about the narrator's origins, the person goes to great lengths in proving to
the narrator that they have known several Native Americans on their own. They

The Issue Of Obamacare, Vaccinations, And Making Sure All...
When it comes to health care in the United States, the initial thought many people have are the many
growing controversies concerning Obamacare, vaccinations, and making sure all Americans have
access to affordable and quality health care. However, what many people fail to realize is a certain
aspect in the medical community that, since the early 80's with the infamous study by Berkman and
Frankel, is increasing at such a tremendous rate that the Columbia Medical Review has referred to it
as an "epidemic in the medical community." The statistics regarding the number of individuals who
die each year due to medical errors is rising; slowly becoming a major concern in the field. Doctors

Investigating problems on both the doctors and patients side during the interaction at any medical
appointment is key when interpreting statistics that relate to this matter. These aspects will be further
explored later in this paper. The general consensus from many articles and studies indicate that
miscommunication is a massive problem that impacts many individuals who die each year from
miscommunication. Furthermore, each article shows a different perspective on where this error
comes from and where, both doctor and patient, go wrong and what they can both do to improve the
communication between them. Another aspect that must also be incorporated into this argument is
that communication is not all verbal and that non–verbal communication can be just as effective or
ineffective when it comes to dealing with other medical personnel or patients. The 7% rule coined
by Albert Mehrabian in his book "Silent Messages" states that "93% of communication is non–
verbal, with 55% being body language and 38% being tone of voice; leaving only 7% of
communication being verbal." ("Silent Messages" Albert Mehrabian), and that ineffective or bad
non–verbal communication can be just as detrimental during an interaction as verbal
communication. Unfortunately, for doctors, the precision of the execution in this small 7% of
communication is crucial when explaining challenging

Analysis Of Sure Things By David Ives
Drama is written to be performed in front of an audience. Reading a play is different than reading a
novel or poetry. In a play, there are not stanzas or paragraphs there are just lines. Also within a play
there are written stage directions to help the reader to better understand the setting and actions of the
characters. When one reads a play, they may imagine the characters or setting differently than when
they watch a play. Also, when the same play is produced by different people the setting or characters
may differ from one another. This is due to how different producers interpret the play. When one
reads a play, they may interpret things differently than what the director interprets when producing a
play. When reading "Sure Things" by David Ives I envisioned an elaborate café as the setting. I
pictured multiple tables around so that there were other possible places for Bill to sit rather than just
with Betty. I also visualized more people within the café and a coffee bar with a barista. When
visualizing the characters, I imagined a very pretty young woman well put together wearing a suit
and glasses to play Betty. I pictured Betty as very professional and well educated and elegant. I
interpreted Bill as a young man whom was not as educated as Betty and not as well put together.
Also, when reading "Sure Things", the purpose of the bell was not very clear. At first, I could not
figure out what the bell was portraying and symbolizing as I read "Sure Things". It was not

Individualism In The Play 'Sure Thing'
Throughout time each and every single individual of the human kind have been taught the art of
individualism. Selling the idea of independence and self–sufficiency, civilization after civilization

and creating social taboos to oppress individuals as components of the greater scheme that is society.
The believe of individualism, the big banner that says it is fine to be different have become the
current most followed idea, the question is whether or not such individualism exist or it is nothing
more than a created fantasy use to shape the existence of a race. For instance, the civilize system we

Both plays give the reader a unique vision of the location they are taking place. The play "Trifles"
illustrates its settings in a small time kind of environment; the characters point out some aspects of
farmers' lifestyle. For instance, Mrs. Hale mentions, "There's a great deal of work to be done on a
farm. Farmers' wives have their hands full"(Glaspell, 604). Suggesting the busyness of days at this
scenario, and there was no time to get involved in their neighbors' businesses. Gives the impression
that small town people at the time were no really the social type, everyone was busy doing their
work. Specially women that had to take care the house chores, they did not have time to go out have
coffee with their friends and gossip about their entertained lives. While in "Sure Thing", the readers
see more of city lifestyle. Two stranger that meet at a Café, start talking and find out they been going
to the same Café for a while now and never ran into each other before; as Bill says, "City life. We
probably pass each other in the street every day. Right in front of this place, probably" (Ives, 2).
Furthermore, the fact that Betty is in the Café reading a book by herself on a Friday night shows an
independent woman, free to do as she pleased. Nevertheless, Bill founds it a bit strange " Sort of a
sad occupation for a Friday night, isn't it? Reading here all by yourself"(Ives, 3). It is

An Analysis Of 'Sure' By Arlene Tribbia
Part of human nature is maintaining pleasant and enjoyable relationships with others. Once a person
has formed an emotional connection to another, a bond that has formed over a long period of time,
the impression of that person is nearly obstinate. Though Arlene Tribbia's poem, "Sure," begins with
a description of a brother's misconduct, she ends her piece with a memory that conveys what the
character misses about him. The attachment that a person may have regarding others affects his or
her emotional perception towards them, and causes him or her to overlook imperfections and
disagreeable actions. The poem, "Sure," starts with a person, gender not specified, talking about his
or her sibling. Although the piece is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Because she begins recalling her childhood, the attachment that she feels towards her brother causes
her to dismiss her brother's disorderly conduct. So even when her brother was out committing
crimes, getting drunk, and more, she did not feel that it was important to brood over, because the
image does not fit with the perception that she has of him.
When she first begins the poem, the sense of sorrow is present. The author speaks of what her
brother has done wrong, but she does so with an attitude that shows she does not care about those
actions. She speaks like this until the near end, where she openly expresses her endearment for her
brother and sheds a more positive outlook onto him. The last stanza demonstrates that, as a person
who has made poor decisions, he was a caring brother until the end. It also shows how, regardless of
what others think, she will always view him in her own way.
Aside from the tone that Tribbia uses, she also leaves the character ungendered and the brother
unnamed. By doing so, she helps the reader understand that the memory is the detail that is most
important, and not the way the brother is identified. This further allows the reader to visualize the
brother in a way that they want to, which may cause a more distinctive feeling. And by leaving the
character ungendered, Tribbia enables the reader to put themselves in the

Second Chances to Make a Sure Thing
The symbolism of the bell signifying a fresh start, a true chance to have a clean slate and create your

Stanley is the epitome of machismo, interested in only the basic pleasures, which are parallel to
what a simple animal enjoys. Stella, Stanley's wife, is the mediator between Blanche and Stanley,
though she ultimately fails in preventing these two from verbal or, later, physical violence.
Essentially, Blanche instigates the "fight" by entering the apartment and trying to usurp Stanley's
reign, which is partly comprised of Stella's love and attention. Without even seeing Stanley, Stella
immediately sizes him up and subscribes to the idea that the Polish are" not so–high–brow" (23).
There is a dialogue between Stanley and Stella about Stanley, stating:
Stella: Stanley is Polish, you know.
Blanche: Oh, yes. They're something like Irish, aren't they?...Only not so–highbrow?...Is he so–
different?
Stella: Yes. A different species...He's on the road a good deal.
Blanche: Oh. Travels?
Stella: Yes.
Blanche: Good. I mean–isn't it? (Williams 23–25)
Blanche already throws a "low punch" at Stanley's credibility without him even knowing. She is
even more motivated by the fact that he travels sometimes, which could give her many opportunities
to sulk to Stella about her problems and slowly disintegrate Stanley's control of the apartment.
Throughout the play, she continues to harp on Stanley's qualities, for instance, pointing out that she
has not "noticed the stamp of genius even on Stanley's

Play Analysis – Sure Thing by David Ivis
The Setting of "Sure Thing" by David Ivis is important in terms of setting the mood as well as the
context for the play's main conflict. "Sure Thing" is set in a café where the the two main characters,
Bill and Betty, awkwardly encounter one another. During their encounter, a ring of a bell continues
to disrupt their connection. Despite the ringing bell, or because of the ringing bell, the two
characters are able to establish a connection. The fact that they are ultimately able to establish a

Truly, there is no protagonist or antagonist in this play insofar as either Bill or Betty being able to be
considered one or the other. The play begins with Bill walking up to Betty and asking if the chair
next to her is taken. She replies that the chair is taken. However, the bell immediately rings and Bill
restates the question. This time, Betty says that it is not taken, but that she is expecting someone.
Again, the bell rings, and Bill asks if the chair is taken again. This process continues, indicating a
change in circumstances each time the bell rings, until Bill is able to take a seat next to Betty. What
the bell does is it allows the circumstances to change. The bell also allows the conditions that might
negatively affect one entering a relationship with another to be changed to accommodate the
budding relationship. This process continues throughout the entire play until the main differences
between the two (differences that would have prevented a significant connection) are entirely erased
and reversed. After beginning one way, repairing the situation, and starting over, the two realize that
they are perfect companions, and agree to fall in love.
It is difficult to isolate the play's conflict to anything other than on a thematic level. Every time a
conflict has a potential of presenting itself, the fantasy element

Beauty And Sure Thing Essay
Two questions come to mind after reading the plays Sure Thing by David Ives and Beauty by Jane
Martin. Is anything a "sure thing" and isn't beauty in the eye of the beholder? These two playwrights
bring up interesting topics of conversation. Comedy can be defined in different categories just like
the two plays. I suggest that Sure Thing is farce and beauty is a satiric comedy. I think in order to
make a successful comedy you need to incorporate the use of irony. Beauty and Sure Thing are
proof of that "comedy is just tragedy without the sentimentality" because each character faces an
obstacle and finds the irony in the end of their situations.
Every person defines beauty in different ways, which is the problem that Bethany faces in the play

Each play has a conflict that tests the characters perspective of themselves and their social needs.
For example, in Sure Thing Bill wants to start a relationship with Betty but certain needs indicate
that one them was not good enough for the other at different points throughout the play. In the play
Beauty, both Carla and Bethany are struggling to find a relationship with someone that would like
them for them. Once those certain situations work out all the characters have a chance to proceed in
their relationships. In both plays, the characters are chasing after what they think is the ideal. I think
that Martin and Ives's wants us to see the uselessness in searching for something that we think we
need. We should be happy with ourselves. We rely on society to indictate what's okay for us and
eventually leads us to situations that we didn't want in the beginning. All in all I believe that a sure
thing can't be found, it is something that eventually happens. Bethany thinks that having beauty is
going to make her a sure thing but she loses that biggest attribute that most people engage with her
intelligence. Finding a sure thing and beauty in others may lead you down a path that you don't want
to take but in the end you have to find it in yourself

David Ives Sure Thing Analysis
David Ives' play "Sure Thing" offers a complex examination of how time and circumstance combine
to serve as catalysts for either conflict or harmony within human relationships. Ives uses the ringing
of a bell within his stage directions to signify the passing of time as it relates to the varying ways
that Bill and Betty perceive each other. Additionally, Ives uses Betty's changeable attitudes towards
The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner as a metaphor for her equally malleable feelings
towards Bill. These uses of symbolism and metaphor contribute to an overarching theme within the
narrative in which a combination of timing and sheer luck serve to become either the detriment or
the catalyst for various potential relationships. Ultimately, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Initially, when Bill asks her how she is enjoying her book, she responds that "it is great." However,
in the very next scene she remarks that"[Faulkner] is boring" (Ives 5–6). Bill proceeds to comment
that she may have previously disliked Faulkner because "[she] might not have been ready for him,"
noting that "you have to hit these things at the right moment or it's no good" (Ives 7). Betty's
unpredictable pattern of general like and dislike towards Faulkner is a clear metaphor for her
unstable pattern of either accepting or rejecting Bill's attempts at conversation. These varying
reactions are influenced by the individual timing and circumstances produced in each distinct scene.
In some instances, Bill barely gets the chance to sit at the same table as Betty; in others, they fall
deeply in love before the night is over. Like Bill says, if the timing is off in even the most
insignificant way, the potential relationships is "no good." In this way, the play is further expressing
the theme that even the strongest potential relationships may often rest solely on a blind
combination of luck, timing, and

Summary Of The Sure Thing By Ted Turner

  • 1. Summary Of The Sure Thing By Ted Turner "The fact that most new businesses fail is hardly a secret"(James Surowiecki). In this quote, Surowiecki is saying that all entrepreneurs know that when they start a business, it can either prosper or fail. Building a successful business takes time and money. However, it also takes a lot of commitment. One has to be focused on his or her goals, and they must do whatever it takes to accomplish them. The most important characteristic of an entrepreneur is determination because it can help a businessperson accomplish any goals they set and build a successful business. Accomplishing one's goals takes time, patience and most importantly determination. Conquering one's goals cannot be done without being committed to it and willing to do whatever it takes to accomplish the goal. In the excerpt "The Sure Thing" by Malcolm Gladwell, Ted Turner's determination is what turns him into a successful businessman. Turner is an intelligent man who knows his way around the business world. His ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... An intelligent bargainer is able to find themselves deals that make them money. Bargainers can also be able to trick other people into giving them what they want without the other person realizing what they are giving up. What this argument fails to consider is that determination can bring out the other characteristics within a businessperson. A determined businessperson will do whatever it takes to build a business for them. Through this process, they will become self–motivated, intelligent, and confident. These traits aid in building a successful business. Determination also makes an entrepreneur into a risk taker who is willing to risk their money in order to build a more successful empire. There are many other traits that create a successful entrepreneur, but determination is the key trait that brings out the other characteristics within a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Not Sure When I first entered high school, I had no intentions of playing football. My friends who played pop warner had always urged me to play but I always decided to play baseball. One day towards the end of 8th grade I made the decision to play football. I remember the first day of weights during the summer, I was so nervous I almost felt sick. I knew a select few of people but had no idea how much I was about to change my life. When everyone reported that first day, we started off by lining up and taking attendance. I recall as I was standing there, an older burley man walked up and began to walk slowly past each one of us. It almost seemed as he was examining us like we were the "fresh meat". As he walked by me, he looked me up and down, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We came into the game 10–0 and were playing in the semi–final game in order to advance to the CIF championship . At half time we were down by twenty–one points and our morale was visibly down. As we were sitting in the locker room, Coach Hare came in and began to walk around looking at each one of us. He then started telling us about his surf session from earlier that day. He told us how epic the break was at Swamis (local surf spot) and the women that were out there. He went on for 10 minutes describing his time surfing that day. I glanced around the room with a very confused look as well as everyone else. By the time he finished up everyone was laughing because that speech made no sense and had absolutely no relevance to our situation. Looking back at his speech, it could not have been a better time. He took out minds off the bad situation we were in, raised our morale and allowed us to drive on since giving us momentum. We ended up winning the game and the championship the next week. In that speech alone, Coach Hare demonstrated duty by motivating us and raising morale witch was his job as a coach. Throughout my whole high school football career, Coach Hare demonstrated all of the Army values with his coaching style. He put his plyers before himself in all situations whether we were struggling in school, football or our personal lives, he was ALWAYS there for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Testing Is A Sure Anticipation Of Failure Any IT solution that is implemented without proper method of testing in project is a sure anticipation of failure. Testing is an ongoing process both formally and informally. Testing happens in different stages of software development life cycle like in development, actual testing phase and in post–deployment phase. The Importance of Testing: Without a well–planned testing effort, the project might face a serious operational and executional behavior of the solution. With a poorly tested solution, the maintenance and support expenses will shoot upwards exponentially, and the reliability of the solution will be very tragic. Therefore, project managers must realize the importance of testing. There are 2 important types of testing: A/B Test: A/B test is also known as split testing or bucket testing. A/B testing is the method where two version of the webpages or app against each other to determine which version performs better. In A/B testing two or more variants of the pages are shown to user at random, and statistical analysis is used to determine which variation performs better. In A/B test webpage or the app screen is taken and modified to create the second version of the same page. This change can be simple or be a complete redesign of the page. Half of the traffic is shown original version of the page and half are showed modified version. As visitors are served either control or variation, their engagement with each experience is measured and collected in analytics ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. David Ives Sure Thing Analysis The play "Sure Thing" by David Ives is about two people who meet at a small café. They start talking to each other and each time someone says something wrong, or the conversation goes south, a bell rings and they start over. In the end, they end up liking each other a lot and have a longer stretch of uninterrupted dialogue. This play is a challenging piece to work with as a director since there isn't much to it. However, if one were to look at it from a film–production perspective, more could be done. To enhance this piece, working with camera angles and background music will be the best way to go. Since this piece is a lot of dialogue and very little movement, several different camera angles will be needed to make it interesting. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Of course, music doesn't need to be under the whole thing. But they are in a café and cafés come with noise, whether that be the machines, radio, or the other customers. Plus it is nighttime and people are coming in and out of the café, so there is bound to be sound from the traffic and nightlife filtering in. Music and background noise adds a really powerful aspect to any piece and sometimes the lack of music makes a scene even more dramatic. However, building up music for intense scenes can pull the audience in. For example, when Betty and Bill are really going at it and having to start over several times (Ives 1053), I am picturing the music picking up speed and getting more intense with each ring of the bell until it's built up to halt as soon as Betty says, "Listen, I was headed to the movies..."(Ives 1053). This would add a comedic value to the piece that I believe the audience would enjoy. David Ives left future directors with a lot of wiggle–room when he wrote "Sure Thing." There are many different directions a director could go in any aspect when taking on a piece like this. But, with any film, the two most important thing to think about are camera angles and background music. When those are done properly, everything else will fall into place. It's a sure ... • 9. Be Sure You Re Right Then Go Ahead Analysis Sarah Nilsen, in her journal article "'Be Sure You're Right, Then Go Ahead': The Davy Crockett Gun Craze", considered the way guns were promoted to the youth by television shows. The show she focuses her attention to is Walt Disney's Davy Crockett series. As the industry for western films began to slowly grow, the rate of juvenile delinquency became an issue that most parents wanted to fix. Parents began to question where this violent behavior came from. They started realizing their kid's interest in toys such as toy pistols. This raised questions whether the media was silently making guns an acceptable form of everyday life. The inspiration from this issue led Nilsen to research the topic. Her purpose in the article was to pick apart ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Nilsen did an excellent job making her topic clear. In the second paragraph she specifically states what the article is about. There is no grey area where you don't understand what point she is trying to make. She is precise and clear with her word choice. Her writing style is easy to read, which goes along with her audience. Nilsen's audience are people who want to know more about whether the media is influencing and blinding families to encouraging aggressive behavior in their kids. Some of this audience could even include parents. She wants to inform readers that Disney is influencing kids without their realization. This is why her word choice and audience go hand in hand. It is an easy read because some of these people are parents who just want to understand the issue, and perhaps do not particularly want to read a deep scientific article. Nilsen also had a decent quality of research to back up her work. She properly cited her work and had a two–page work cited section at the end. Nilsen's research was intriguing, because it is a topic that is still debated today. Her overall organization was decent, although it felt a little ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Short Story Sure Thing By David Ives The short story sure thing by David Ives, is a play centered on two characters and one setting. The story is about a girl, a guy, and the ability to make a good first impression. Although, there is a saying that you never get a second chance, yet in this play you do. The writer separates each conversation with a bell sound, which stands for the conversation resetting to give them another chance. There are many ways to look at this play whether it represents timing, pickup lines, or first looks, all these qualities add up to start the perfect first impression and to a happy ending. First thing that this story portrayed is timing. Timing is an important part in everything you do whether it is work, dating, or just living life. Throughout this story the bell kept going off because neither the girl nor guy could get the right timing. They would say the right things but not really at the right time, or they would say the wrong things at the right time. This part of the meaning shows us that timing can be everything, it can make or break any situation. People always have problems with their timing whether it's too early or too late. In this story the dialog starts off short and they repeat there scene frequently, then as the story progresses the lines get longer and the resets are shorter, this is showing that they are actually getting the timing ... • 15. An Analysis Of The Play 'Sure Things' By Davis Ives Sure Things by Davis Ives Analysis In 1988 David Ives created "Sure Things" a short play One–act comedy where he explores many possibilities of a common social daily life situation; dating. With only two characters, Betty and Bill, common names for common people and with fine humor and critic vision, using a peculiar and functional language the author reveals in many ways how this every day activity can have a different outcome, depending in the moment, chosen words, characters mood, personality and intention. • 17. Sure Thing David Ives Analysis Language is the way people communicate. A person's choice of words, tone, and even body language all make up his or her language. Language is incredibly important, especially during a first encounter. It is said that language limits thought and thought is dependent upon language. When two people first meet, it is their language that helps both people to form their own opinions of each other and can make or break the bond between these two people. There are many works of literature that show the importance of language as a major literary theme. One of these works is Sure Thing by David Ives. This play emphasizes the significance of language in a light–hearted, humorous account of two strangers that meet in a local café and begin to talk to each other in the hopes of obtaining a date. In Sure Thing, Ives uses many literary techniques to portray the value of language as a main theme within his play, including minimalism, symbolism, and repetition. In Sure Thing, Ives' minimalistic approach to the setting is crucial to the development of the characters and the play. Not only are there only two characters, Bill and Betty, within the drama, but there is also hardly anything else on the stage ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Throughout the play, there is a bell that rings every time Bill or Betty say something that would make their conversation begin to falter. After the bell rings, Bill and Betty get the chance to recant their earlier statements and say something else that might intrigue the other person more. The ringing bell symbolizes a fresh start and a second chance to make a good impression. This ties into Ives' theme of language being paramount because the bell rings when Bill or Betty use language that is not beneficial to their end goal – getting to know each other and going out on a date. Sure Thing Compare And Contrast Even though both production's plot portrays an awkward meeting of a man and a woman in a coffee shop, exchanging various dialogues and a multitude of conflicts associated with dating, I do not think the actors and directors had the same purpose for these two different productions. The film adaptation of "Sure Thing" is driven more by the setting than the dialogue. The black and white imagery gives the film a more dramatic tone. The use of the split screen of the actors symbolized the disconnect of their relationship. As the actor's characters began to connect with each other, the screen also comes together as one. The actor's voices are monotone and their characters showed little emotion or body language towards each other. The "beep" sound ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There are no moments in my childhood worth mentioning and those that are I prefer to keep to myself. However what I can and choose to share are common experiences faced by many and that I too have experienced such as bullying, the divorce of two parents, having to constantly move from place to place, and always starting school as the new kid. My dad was in the master bedroom casually watching what I took to be the History Channel. I remember looking at the TV myself and seeing a man standing in a beautiful garden. He was talking about how the area he was in was the closest to what heaven was supposed to look like according to the Bible. My curiosity compelled me and I began to watch the show myself. I decided he was right. The area was so beautiful and as he described each component of it, relating it back to the Bible, I was even more convinced. I did this because, though the Mayans had predicted the world would end in December of 2012, my pastor informed the church that no man could predict the end and that it was possible the end could come sooner rather than later. I sat nervously as he preached some of the "Signs of the Times." Everything he told us seemed to have already happened. And by the time we had reached the year 2011, there were so many natural disasters and assorted chaos that I confirmed to myself that the world was ending either in 2011 or 2012. There had been an earthquake in Haiti and a tsunami in Japan. Many new terrorists were forming new groups and, though I did not believe this rumor at all, there was talk that Obama was the antichrist. In life, it is easier to hate someone for what they do rather than forgive and look beyond their flaws. This mindset is toxic. Humans need to steer away from hate and focus on love and forgiveness. In the poem Sure by Arlene Tribbia a sibling yearns for their brother despite his lousy choices. • 27. Ignorance And When Success Is Sure Analysis In life humans typically don't try again after failing at many things. Instead they generally give up and not coming back to it. "All you need in this life is ignorance and confidence, and then success is sure" (Twain). In order to be able to succeed, you have to fail at something. Ignorance can be tied into failing because when you do something for the first time you probably don't know what you are doing. When you do fail, you should try again and grow off of your mistakes which also ties into confidence. Being confident can relate to persevering to continue trying harder. Once you have failed at something and persevered to continue, you have found success. Twain states that in order to get success as a outcome you have to have ignorance. People that try something new everyday are usually failing at something and trying again the next time. No human is perfect in any shape or form. Therefore they are guaranteed to fail, and that's where ignorance ties into not knowing how to do something a first time. By the way even if these skills might seem pretty achievable by academic and professional education, things become more complicated when we talk about international business. In fact global management involve many aspect that do not require a simple preparation in a specific business field, but it rather requires a broad preparation on different fields, such as international laws, commerce policies and people customs just to mention a few. Just less than a century ago, management rules were very different from now, work was mainly composed of manual labor task, this means that a traditional pyramid hierarchy with employees and managers loyally obedient to their top managers, was a solid structure to build a good and healthy business. But starting a few decades ago, as work begun to require less manual labor and more knowledge work, things have changed dramatically bringing modern management to new standards as depicted by Peter Drucker who pointed out the importance of entrepreneurship and innovation into the management world. A further evolution occurred in the 1970s with Warren Bennis who stated that more than just a manager, an effective leader was defined as someone with the ability to influence and motivate others not only to perform work tasks but also to support the organization's values and meet the organization's goals. Two or Three Things I Know for Sure Two or Three Things I Know For Sure Allison illuminates the fact that we as women must appreciate each other and our beauty before we can truly cherish other forms of beauty around us. "Two or three things I know for sure, and one of them is that of we are not beautiful to each other, we cannot know beauty in any form"(86). We are so conditioned to see female beauty as what men see as beautiful, that we don 't even know what it means to us. If we can get to the point where women feel beautiful even if they don 't fit the societal ideal, it will allow us to open our minds to all other forms of beauty. Two examples of these plays would be Words, Words, Words and Sure Thing Form his collection of plays called All in the Timing. There are many different examples of repetition in each play. Ives repeats one certain thing and makes this repetition mean many different things. In Sure Thing there is the repetition of the bell, which represent how we tend to make snap judgments on people, and how we all strive for perfection. He also uses the repetition of the words sure thing to represent how nothing in life can really be considered a sure thing. In contrast in Words, Words, Words Ives uses the repetition of the Monkey's typing to represent how sometimes luck gets us to where we need to be. Ives also uses the repetition of Milton exhibiting typical Monkey behavior to show how we can repetition as a form of manipulation The bell rings twenty–eight times in Sure Thing. As soon as we learn one fact about a person we base everything they say on that one fact and that it is very hard to come back from a bad first impression. Sure Thing And Hills Like White Elephants "The real art of conversation is not only to say the right thing in the right place but to leave the wrong thing unsaid at any tempting moment." –Dorothy Nevill Conversation is a part of our everyday human lives. Yet, it is something that some people really struggle with. This theme is portrayed in both David Ives' one–act short play Sure Thing and the short story Hills Like White Elephants by Ernest Hemingway. Sure Thing comes from Ives' collection, All in the Timing, which includes many ten–minute plays dealing with irony, timing and language (Green). In Sure Thing, both parties handle communication in different ways. The play is packed with irony, humor, intense characterization, and satire from the very beginning. Hills Like White Elephants ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Since the short story is written primarily in dialogue, it makes it very similar to reading a play. The conversation is very generalized and not specific at all, it leaves a lot up to the reader to use critical thinking skills to determine what the story is actually about. The story starts with the American man and Jig having a beer and making awkward, forced conversation; Jig looks over the hills and sees the clouds and says "They look like white elephants." This is an example of the author using symbolism; a white elephant in communication usually refers to something big or problematic, i.e. "addressing the elephant in the room." Jig is trying to avoid the conversation about the abortion, but she ultimately knows that it is an unavoidable topic. The motif in this short story is unquestionably the beer; they turn to the alcohol because they are trying to avoid their real life situation at hand. They drink large beers to fill up time so that they have less time to talk about the unborn baby and once the American brings up the topic Jig orders more beer. While reading the conversation it becomes apparent that the American's tone is emotionless; after all, he refers to the abortion of their unplanned baby as "It's an awfully simple operation. Furthermore, each article shows a different perspective on where this error comes from and where, both doctor and patient, go wrong and what they can both do to improve the communication between them. Another aspect that must also be incorporated into this argument is that communication is not all verbal and that non–verbal communication can be just as effective or ineffective when it comes to dealing with other medical personnel or patients. • 47. Analysis Of Sure Things By David Ives Drama is written to be performed in front of an audience. Reading a play is different than reading a novel or poetry. In a play, there are not stanzas or paragraphs there are just lines. Also within a play there are written stage directions to help the reader to better understand the setting and actions of the characters. When one reads a play, they may imagine the characters or setting differently than when they watch a play. Also, when the same play is produced by different people the setting or characters may differ from one another. This is due to how different producers interpret the play. When one reads a play, they may interpret things differently than what the director interprets when producing a play. When reading "Sure Things" by David Ives I envisioned an elaborate café as the setting. I pictured multiple tables around so that there were other possible places for Bill to sit rather than just with Betty. I also visualized more people within the café and a coffee bar with a barista. When visualizing the characters, I imagined a very pretty young woman well put together wearing a suit and glasses to play Betty. I pictured Betty as very professional and well educated and elegant. When she first begins the poem, the sense of sorrow is present. The author speaks of what her brother has done wrong, but she does so with an attitude that shows she does not care about those actions. She speaks like this until the near end, where she openly expresses her endearment for her brother and sheds a more positive outlook onto him. The last stanza demonstrates that, as a person who has made poor decisions, he was a caring brother until the end. It also shows how, regardless of what others think, she will always view him in her own way. Aside from the tone that Tribbia uses, she also leaves the character ungendered and the brother unnamed. By doing so, she helps the reader understand that the memory is the detail that is most important, and not the way the brother is identified. This further allows the reader to visualize the brother in a way that they want to, which may cause a more distinctive feeling. This allows me to know from the start of the morning what needs to be achieved by the end of my day. I will be able to check off steps as they are completed and know if I am on the right track to completing my day's tasks. 2. Delegate – not everything needs to be done by me and me alone. A good manager knows how to delegate and who to delegate to. By making good relationships and listening to your employees and learning their capabilities you are able to give them tasks they are able to get done. 3. • 57. Second Chances to Make a Sure Thing The symbolism of the bell signifying a fresh start, a true chance to have a clean slate and create your own destiny, was brilliant in my eyes. One of my favorite lines in the play was definitely when Bill said, "You have to hit these things at the right moment or it's no good" (1121). "Sure Thing" by David Ives The Play "Sure Thing" from David Ives examines the endless variations of boy meet girl and the ensuing pick up lines. The central theme throughout the play displays a few varieties of a possible conversation that end with a ringing bell that symbolizes a fresh start and a second chance to make a good impression. The swift conversations begin in a coffee house with the two main and only characters are Bill and Betty. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Stanley is the epitome of machismo, interested in only the basic pleasures, which are parallel to what a simple animal enjoys. Stella, Stanley's wife, is the mediator between Blanche and Stanley, though she ultimately fails in preventing these two from verbal or, later, physical violence. Essentially, Blanche instigates the "fight" by entering the apartment and trying to usurp Stanley's reign, which is partly comprised of Stella's love and attention. Without even seeing Stanley, Stella immediately sizes him up and subscribes to the idea that the Polish are" not so–high–brow" (23). There is a dialogue between Stanley and Stella about Stanley, stating: Stella: Stanley is Polish, you know. Blanche: Oh, yes. They're something like Irish, aren't they?...Only not so–highbrow?...Is he so– different? Stella: Yes. A different species...He's on the road a good deal. Blanche: Oh. Travels? Stella: Yes. Blanche: Good. I mean–isn't it? (Williams 23–25) Blanche already throws a "low punch" at Stanley's credibility without him even knowing. She is even more motivated by the fact that he travels sometimes, which could give her many opportunities to sulk to Stella about her problems and slowly disintegrate Stanley's control of the apartment. Throughout the play, she continues to harp on Stanley's qualities, for instance, pointing out that she has not "noticed the stamp of genius even on Stanley's ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 59. Are You Sure To Get Rid Of Books Essay Are You Sure We Got Rid of Books? The world is moving fast, and telecommunications are running as fast as possible. Can you imagine your life without your tablet or cell–phone? These devices have become huge parts of our lives. We are addicted to them, moreover, we are totally forgetting what our parents and grandparents used to get their knowledge. We've already forgotten how awesome of a feeling it is to open a book with a cup of coffee, to become a part of this plot, to live a story of our favorite characters. Is it too late to redeem ourselves? Could we have a chance to stop this? Are we going to be like a strong offensive line and protect ourselves from venomous electronic devices, which step by step kill our brains and bodies? Let's seriously think about it. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to statistics, almost 70% of Americans use electronic devices every day, including using social media, starring on TV, searching something on the internet, and of course, news. You can notice situations, when you try to wake up earlier not to eat breakfast first, but to refresh your Facebook page and find interesting news on BBC. But is it considered to be bad? Not necessarily. We are making lots of progress, but does progress mean we have to forget old things and ways? Does it really tell us that we have to burn our books, throw away newspapers and just use our laptops all the time? From my point of view, this statement is wrong, and I am going to protect my opinion about this. Let's think about the horrible facts about influence of us not using books: people have problems with health, eyes are damaged by screens and lights, useless pictures and videos on many web–pages take our attention and kill our time, social media completely makes us forget about the real world, and cyber bullying affects people's ... • 61. Play Analysis – Sure Thing by David Ivis Essay example Play Analysis – Sure Thing by David Ivis The Setting of "Sure Thing" by David Ivis is important in terms of setting the mood as well as the context for the play's main conflict. "Sure Thing" is set in a café where the the two main characters, Bill and Betty, awkwardly encounter one another. During their encounter, a ring of a bell continues to disrupt their connection. Despite the ringing bell, or because of the ringing bell, the two characters are able to establish a connection. The fact that they are ultimately able to establish a connection suggests many thing about relationships, such as that timing can play a major role in either beginning or not beginning a relationship. For instance, the bell (and the bell's timing) suggests that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Truly, there is no protagonist or antagonist in this play insofar as either Bill or Betty being able to be considered one or the other. The play begins with Bill walking up to Betty and asking if the chair next to her is taken. She replies that the chair is taken. However, the bell immediately rings and Bill restates the question. This time, Betty says that it is not taken, but that she is expecting someone. Again, the bell rings, and Bill asks if the chair is taken again. This process continues, indicating a change in circumstances each time the bell rings, until Bill is able to take a seat next to Betty. What the bell does is it allows the circumstances to change. The bell also allows the conditions that might negatively affect one entering a relationship with another to be changed to accommodate the budding relationship. This process continues throughout the entire play until the main differences between the two (differences that would have prevented a significant connection) are entirely erased and reversed. After beginning one way, repairing the situation, and starting over, the two realize that they are perfect companions, and agree to fall in love. It is difficult to isolate the play's conflict to anything other than on a thematic level. Every time a conflict has a potential of presenting itself, the fantasy element ... • 63. Beauty And Sure Thing Essay Two questions come to mind after reading the plays Sure Thing by David Ives and Beauty by Jane Martin. Is anything a "sure thing" and isn't beauty in the eye of the beholder? These two playwrights bring up interesting topics of conversation. Comedy can be defined in different categories just like the two plays. I suggest that Sure Thing is farce and beauty is a satiric comedy. I think in order to make a successful comedy you need to incorporate the use of irony. Beauty and Sure Thing are proof of that "comedy is just tragedy without the sentimentality" because each character faces an obstacle and finds the irony in the end of their situations. Every person defines beauty in different ways, which is the problem that Bethany faces in the play ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Each play has a conflict that tests the characters perspective of themselves and their social needs. For example, in Sure Thing Bill wants to start a relationship with Betty but certain needs indicate that one them was not good enough for the other at different points throughout the play. In the play Beauty, both Carla and Bethany are struggling to find a relationship with someone that would like them for them. Once those certain situations work out all the characters have a chance to proceed in their relationships. In both plays, the characters are chasing after what they think is the ideal. I think that Martin and Ives's wants us to see the uselessness in searching for something that we think we need. We should be happy with ourselves. We rely on society to indictate what's okay for us and eventually leads us to situations that we didn't want in the beginning. All in all I believe that a sure thing can't be found, it is something that eventually happens. Bethany thinks that having beauty is going to make her a sure thing but she loses that biggest attribute that most people engage with her intelligence. Finding a sure thing and beauty in others may lead you down a path that you don't want to take but in the end you have to find it in yourself ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 65. David Ives Sure Thing Analysis David Ives' play "Sure Thing" offers a complex examination of how time and circumstance combine to serve as catalysts for either conflict or harmony within human relationships. Ives uses the ringing of a bell within his stage directions to signify the passing of time as it relates to the varying ways that Bill and Betty perceive each other. Additionally, Ives uses Betty's changeable attitudes towards The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner as a metaphor for her equally malleable feelings towards Bill. These uses of symbolism and metaphor contribute to an overarching theme within the narrative in which a combination of timing and sheer luck serve to become either the detriment or the catalyst for various potential relationships. Ultimately, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Initially, when Bill asks her how she is enjoying her book, she responds that "it is great." However, in the very next scene she remarks that"[Faulkner] is boring" (Ives 5–6). Bill proceeds to comment that she may have previously disliked Faulkner because "[she] might not have been ready for him," noting that "you have to hit these things at the right moment or it's no good" (Ives 7). Betty's unpredictable pattern of general like and dislike towards Faulkner is a clear metaphor for her unstable pattern of either accepting or rejecting Bill's attempts at conversation. These varying reactions are influenced by the individual timing and circumstances produced in each distinct scene. In some instances, Bill barely gets the chance to sit at the same table as Betty; in others, they fall deeply in love before the night is over. Like Bill says, if the timing is off in even the most insignificant way, the potential relationships is "no good." In this way, the play is further expressing the theme that even the strongest potential relationships may often rest solely on a blind combination of luck, timing, and ... • 67. Sure Thing Essay Sure Thing In David Ives' short one–act comedy play "Sure Thing" he examines a number of variations in which a conversation between a guy and girl could take place. Theme, setting, plot, characters all of these things are essential to the understanding and captivation of the audience. With every exchange of conversation there is the ability to regain a fresh start by getting a second chance to make a good impression. The setting of this play is simple, a coffee shop. The setting of the scene is in a small café, so I placed just a regular brown table with two regular wooden chairs in the middle of the stage. I placed it in the middle so that everybody could see what is going on and because that is where everything takes place. And on top of the table I have a small cup of coffee in a purple cup, I chose purple because when I drink coffee at home I drink out of my purple mug. In the center of the table I have placed a pink vase with a red rose in it, pink because I connect pink with the color red and I chose red for the rose because most roses are red. One day after school, I went home and turned on the television to find a music video of his hit song "Sure Thing." I was mesmerized by the smoothness of his voice, the metaphoric lyrics of the song, and the nostalgic effects of the video itself. The entire video left me enchanted and wanting more. After the video went off, I did my research on who he was and the music that he had released. From that moment on, I fell in love with his music and been a fan of his ever since. Miguel's overall appearance is a delightful sight that leaves the heart in flutters. His unique hair texture and style has to be his best features. The trend–setting hairstyle, known as a pompadour, is his signature look. Although he sometimes wears it curled towards the front of his face, his neatly groomed hair is usually cut on the sides and back of his head, creating what might be called a fade.
