Outline
• What is a Serial?
• Original Cataloging
• Working with copy
• When do I need a new record?
• Tips and Tricks
• On the horizon
Based on FRBR
What is a Serial?
• Still mostly the same as AACR2
• Issued in successive parts (can be irregular)
• Usually has numbering
• Has no predetermined conclusion
• Includes resources that exhibit characteristics of
serials but have a limited duration as well as
reproductions
General changes in RDA
• Focus is on content, then carrier
• Transcribe what you see
• Fewer abbreviations
Original cataloging
What’s up MARC?
New MARC fields
• 040 $e rda
• Leader/18 (Desc) – i
• 264 instead of 260
• 336 Content Type
• 337 Media Type
• 338 Carrier Type
101010
Basis for identification of the resource
• If issues or parts are sequentially numbered, use
the lowest numbered issue or part available
• If issues are unnumbered or not sequentially
numbered, use the issue or part with the earliest
date of issue
Preferred source of information
• RDA 2.2.2.2 (in descending order of preference)
▫ Title page
▫ Cover
▫ Caption
▫ Masthead
▫ Colophon
▫ Anywhere else formally presented on resource
Caption
A title given at the
beginning of first
page of the text
Colophon
• An inscription usually placed at the end of a
book and usually containing facts relative to its
production
• Most often seen in Asian language serials.
Source of description
• Always provide:
▫ 588 description based on note
▫ Source of title with 588 combined with
description based on note
▫ 588 Latest issue consulted note
14

Additions to the Authorized Access
Point for a Work
• LC-PCC PS 6.27.1.9 – Consider authorized
access point conflicts among all resources, not

▫ Authorized access points are identical: addition
is required
▫ Authorized access points are similar: cataloger’s
judgment

• Use the 776 field for linking between records
created because of changes in media and carrier
types:
▫ Print ceases and is continued online
▫ CD‐ROM serial ceases and is continued online
Relationships in note fields
• 550 (issuing body) - use to justify 7XX

• Same practices as before:

Working with Copy
"The first step in cataloging a serial is praying that
someone else has cataloged it."
Ed Jones, RDA and Serials Cataloging, p. 45
OCLC guidelines
• OCLC policy statement on RDA cataloging in
WorldCat: http://www.oclc.org/en-US/rda/new-
policy.html
• AACR2 records may be converted to RDA
• Never convert an RDA record to an AACR2
record
• Okay to add some RDA elements to AACR2
records
78
Avoid record wars
• Do NOT create a duplicate record using a
different cataloging code if a record already
exists
• Don’t remove valid AACR2/RDA elements when
enhancing records (rather than re-describing)
• If it’s not wrong, leave it alone.
When to upgrade to RDA
• CONSER guidelines (Word doc)
http://www.loc.gov/aba/pcc/conser/documents/W
orkingWithExistingRecords.doc
• Re-describe using RDA if the resulting description is
uninterpretable, if the serial cannot otherwise be
distinguished from another serial
• Need to base description on either issue cited in
DBO or an earlier issue
When to not upgrade to RDA
• If you don’t have the piece in hand
• It is your judgment on whether to upgrade a
non-RDA record to RDA
• You must re-describe if updating a non-RDA
record to RDA
Hybrid Records
• Allows for adding new MARC fields to non-RDA
records
• Adding relator terms to access points
• Spelling out of non-transcribed abbreviations
• Adding complete statement of responsibility
(with item in hand)
Hybrid Records -Adding 33X fields
• Leave correct GMD if already in record (for non-
RDA records)
• GMD never allowed in RDA records
• OCLC will no longer accept GMD in ANY
records after 3/31/2016
Hybrid Records – 260 vs. 264
• New records use only the 264
• For pre-RDA records, prefer to leave 260 fields
and add 264 fields as needed
▫ Change a 260 to a 264 only when have enough
information to provide a full history
When do I need a new record?
• RDA 21.2C – a change in the mode of issuance
and/or media type
• Major change in title proper
• Change in statement of responsibility affecting
serial identification
• Change in the edition statement that indicates a
change in either scope or coverage
New record needed when
• Mode of issuance changes
▫ Serial becomes an integrating resource
▫ Serial becomes a multipart monograph
• Mode of media type changes
▫ Print serial to online
Major and minor changes in titles
• RDA 2.3.2.13
• CCM Module 16
http://www.loc.gov/aba/pcc/conser/word/Mod
ule16.doc
• Only compare against the title proper/245 not
variant titles
• If a minor change, add your title as a
variant/246
Major title changes
• Addition, deletion, change, or reordering of first
5 words UNLESS meets criteria of a minor
change
• Addition, deletion, or change of any word
AFTER the first 5 words that indicates a change
in scope or subject matter
• Name change of the corporate body used in a
title
Major changes examples
• First 5 words
▫ ACE newsletter  ACE journal

Mining & chemical engineering review
▫ Philosophy research archives  Journal of
philosophical research
Major changes examples

in more than one language and/or script
▫ South African medical journal
▫ Suid Afrikaanse tydskrif vir geneeskunde
▫ 
▫ Suid Afrikaanse tydskrif vir geneeskunde
▫ South African medical journal
• However, if the title proper is dropped, that is a
MAJOR change
Minor changes –type f
• Words linking the title to the numbering are
added, deleted, or changed
▫ OSMRE annual report  OSMRE annual report
for the fiscal year ...
Minor changes –type g
• Two or more titles proper are used on a serial
according to a regular pattern
• Fluctuating titles – usually determined
retrospectively
• Different from intentional flip-flops – those are
usually a major change
Minor changes –type h
• Words are added or deleted from a list, or the
order of the words is changed, as long as there is
no significant change to the subject matter. The
words can be anywhere in the title, including the
first five words.

MAJOR change
