What is a Serial?
• Still mostly the same as AACR2
• Issued in successive parts (can be irregular)
• Usually has numbering
• Has no predetermined conclusion
• Includes resources that exhibit characteristics of
serials but have a limited duration as well as
reproductions

• AACR2 records may be converted to RDA
• Never convert an RDA record to an AACR2
record
• Okay to add some RDA elements to AACR2

Avoid record wars
• Do NOT create a duplicate record using a
different cataloging code if a record already
exists
• Don’t remove valid AACR2/RDA elements when
enhancing records (rather than re-describing)
• If it’s not wrong, leave it alone.

When to upgrade to RDA

non-RDA record to RDA
• You must re-describe if updating a non-RDA
record to RDA

Hybrid Records
• Allows for adding new MARC fields to non-RDA
records
• Adding relator terms to access points
• Spelling out of non-transcribed abbreviations
• Adding complete statement of responsibility
(with item in hand)

Hybrid Records -Adding 33X fields
• Leave correct GMD if already in record (for non-
RDA records)
• GMD never allowed in RDA records
• OCLC will no longer accept GMD in ANY
records after 3/31/2016

Hybrid Records – 260 vs. 264
• New records use only the 264
• For pre-RDA records, prefer to leave 260 fields
and add 264 fields as needed
▫ Change a 260 to a 264 only when have enough
information to provide a full history

When do I need a new record?
• RDA 21.2C – a change in the mode of issuance
and/or media type
• Major change in title proper
• Change in statement of responsibility affecting
serial identification
• Change in the edition statement that indicates a
change in either scope or coverage

▫ Serial becomes an integrating resource
▫ Serial becomes a multipart monograph

according to a regular pattern
• Fluctuating titles – usually determined
retrospectively
• Different from intentional flip-flops – those are
usually a major change

Minor changes –type h
• Words are added or deleted from a list, or the
order of the words is changed, as long as there is
no significant change to the subject matter. The
words can be anywhere in the title, including the
first five words.

• Words that indicate the type of resource are

MAJOR change
