A solution is a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances, with a solute that dissolves in a solvent. Water is a universal solvent that can dissolve many other substances like salt or sugar due to its polarity. The concentration of a solution describes how much solute is dissolved in the solvent, and can be saturated, unsaturated, or supersaturated depending on whether it contains the maximum, less than maximum, or more than maximum amount of solute dissolved. Not all solutes are miscible and able to dissolve in a given solvent.

5. More Water When water acts as the solvent the process is called hydration. When you are deHYDRATED that means you haven’t had enough WATER

6. Solvation If another substance acts as the solvent the process is called solvation, which means the solvent surrounds the solute and pulls it apart making it dissolve.

7. Concentration and Solubility A solution can be measured by its concentration. There are three basic measurements of solubility.

8. Saturated Solutions Saturated means the solution contains the maximum amount of solute that can be dissolved in a solution.

9. Supersaturated Solutions Supersaturated means the solution contains more than the maximum amount of solute that can be dissolved in the solution.

10. Unsaturated Solutions An unsaturated solution means it contains very little solute.
