Who is Eligible for Services

the nearest OOD office (Dayton office is off of Edwin C Moses Exit on

âą After the applications is completed, an interview with an OOD
representative will be set up to determine eligibility

â Good Manners
âą Speak to the person directly
â Job Coach or Interpreter will listen into conversation and help when
needed
âą Donât assume someone needs help (ask first)

deaf
â Speak in normal voice and tone
âą May read lips- exaggerated movements
harder to decipher
âą Talking louder only helps if person
doesnât have hearing aid
â Talk directly to them; donât block
face (may be reading lips)

â Get their attention before talking to
them
â Use gestures and visual cues
â Write it down or use text messaging
â Learn some sign language

â Sit down when possible to talk with them
â Donât lean on wheelchairs
â Donât assume what they can or canât do
â Donât worry about expressions like ârunning alongâ or âgo for a walkâ

â Donât pet service dogs without permission
â Identify yourself when entering or leaving room
â Ask before giving assistance to navigate
âą Proper way to do this is to offer your arm for them
â Donât be worried about saying things like âsee you laterâ

â Emphasizes the individuality, equality and dignity
â Rather than defining people by their disability, focuses on the person
â Examples:

â Talk to the person directly
â Job developer may be helping them complete the application
â Job developer may be sitting in an interview
â Treat them just like you would anybody else

â Try not to talk to the job coach very much
â Make individual feel welcome
â Make small talk as you would any other employee
â Donât assume person canât do things
â Give criticism as normal

â If you think they might need help, ask if they do (donât just do it)
â Train the individual like you would normal employee
