From a teacher’s perspective
 There are no “secrets”
 from the kids. They
 know exactly what the
 goals are and how they
 are doing toward
 reaching the goals.
     –Mrs. Workheiser

From students’ perspectives
We see how eich week we git beter.
-Kassidy

             And most of all:
      So that we can lrean.

Creating Expectations

 Establish with all students participating
Student ownership of the process and the
 outcome

What is a “Quality Kid”?
Students decide what should be expected
 of them.

What is a “Quality Teacher”?
Students decide what should be expected
 of the teacher.

                                                    4
3/17/2010

Creating Ground Rules
Students either write ideas on post-it or
can give ideas orally while teacher records
Teacher puts similar ideas into an affinity
 diagram
Can use nominal group technique to
narrow list to most important ideas

Creating Ground Rules
 Limit to 4-5 rules
Try not to make a “Don’t Do” list
Can have students sign, put a copy in their
 data folder

                                                      5

Mission Statement
Defines the purpose of your class
Directs the focus of your students
 Should be easy to recall
 Provides motivation to the class

Mission Statement
 Answers some of these questions:
   Who are we?
   What do we do?
   Why do we do it?
   How do we do it?
Take time to teach each concept
 Read and apply daily

                                             6

                    per week on reading
                    fluency probes as
                    evidenced by weekly
                    charting in student
                    data folders.

Individualized Spelling Test

Math SMART Goal
               We will improve our
               addition and
               subtraction skills. We
               will know we have
               done this by having
               an average of 20
               correct digits on
               January 20th.

Science Test SMART Goal
               5B will reach the goal
               of a 95% class
               average on their
               Science tests.

Homework SMART Goal
               We will improve our
               responsibility by
               returning our reading
               logs. We will know
               we have improved by
               having 24 students
               return their reading
               logs by April 28th.
