2. Audience Research
Many companies use audience research to be able to find out who their target
audience are and why, once a company has defined their target audience this
then enables companies to be able to tailor their advertisements towards their
target audience, if the companies were to do this it creates many positive
outcomes such as creating awareness for their product, this element is key
especially when making teaser trailers because that small amount of time has the
opportunity to make the audience want to view your film and it has the ability to
increase interest for your film.
3. Audience Research
Rough cuts are a very useful way of getting opinions for you teaser trailer or other
products during the production stages because it is not so early in the stages of
development where the audience wouldn't be able to understand what genre the
film will be about and they may be able to pick up on a few narrative themes.
Looking at it from the other way it will not be too late on in the process where it
would be difficult to change anything that the audience have suggested.
4. Secondary Research
In order to gain an insight to who our target audience we used a website called ‘Pearl & Dean’, this
allowed us to look at other films statistics when it came to who the audience were that viewed their films.
To make good use of this website I looked at films that would be similar to ‘The Follower’ and this gave a
clear idea of who our audience were going to be
Annabelle
The Conjuring
5. Secondary Research
During my secondary research i also used a website called ‘Think Box’, this is different from the pearl and
dean website because Pearl and dean allows you to find your target audience and Think Box allows you
to see where it is your target audience spend most of their time on the internet.
6. Primary Research
Before we filmed anything for our teaser trailer or began designing the poster or magazine me and the
other members of my group decided to make a ‘Survey Monkey’ questionnaire in order to see what the
audience (other students with in our class) thought about the genre we were planning on forming our
products around and to find out where they view most of the teaser trailers they see etc.
7. The Rough Cut Comments
In order to get an idea of where we were at with both our poster and teaser trailer (the magazine process had not been
started yet) we presented the work we had done so far to our class and these were called rough cuts, we hadn't worked
much on the teaser trailer and had only put in clips were they roughly were supposed to be as we wanted to have all the
clips where they should be and to see if what we had filmed actually sent the narrative meanings we wanted across to the
audience.
Below is the poster and the teaser trailer rough cut.
8. Audience feedback on the rough cut of the teaser
trailer.
In our class there are 5 other groups that were all given a sheet to fill out which had generic questions
about teaser trailers on, the questions were:
1. Is the teaser trailer suggestive of any genre? If so state the genre and what signifies this.
2. From the teaser, what do you think the narrative themes of the films are?
3. Does the teaser suggest any more about the film's narrative? What do you think happens in the
film?
4. Is it a teaser trailer? Does it follow the conventions of a teaser? Explain how it does and where it
doesn’t
5. Does this make you want to see the rest of the film? Why/why not?
6. What were the teasers strengths? What do you like?
9. Audience feedback on the rough cut of the teaser
trailer.
The feedback we gathered allowed me to see from a range of views what needed
to be improved, me and the other two other members in my group went through
every answer that was made by the other groups on our teaser trailer together and
then decided whether we agreed with the comment that was made or if we
disagreed. We made a lift of the things that we felt we needed to change about
our teaser trailer and then all of the positive feedback we gained we made sure
that we kept the same.
Over the next few slides you will be able to see 4 out of 5 of the feedback sheets
and this is because i found the last feedback sheet illegible.

12. Audience feedback on the rough cut of the teaser
trailer.
The main notes that i took of what we needed to improve on were:
Improve the sounds- IPhone ringing sound in the middle of the trailer does not belong there. A few other
clips have background noise left in them which takes away from the atmosphere.
Clips - A few clips need to be changed or have animations added to them for example, when the masked
character is hiding behind the door it ruins the suspense as it is such a boring shot.
Changing the ending - The clip just before the current end one may work better as the hand covers the
camera and then this will have more impact on the audience than a slow reveal, and a few comments
were that it reveals too much so it would work better.
The montage scene at the end needs work, the clips need to be shortened to make it fast pace and there
also needs to be more effects to make it interesting.
Overall the feedback from the teaser trailer rough cut was extremely useful and we changed a lot to our
teaser trailer accordingly.
13. Audience feedback on the rough cut of the poster.
We did not have a set feedback sheet like we did for the teaser trailer so we asked
if the audience could write their opinions about the poster on the back of the
teaser trailer feedback sheets, the responses we got back did not give us too
much information and were very limited.

Although the feedback was not as in depth as we would have preferred we still
managed to make changes based on them. We enlarged the text to make it stand
out more, we decided to keep the title where it is on the poster even though we
were suggested to centre it, we kept it where it was because it did not look as
good in the centre as we hoped.
16. Audience Feedback on the Final Teaser Trailer, Poster
& Magazine Cover
We used YouTube to publish the final version of our teaser trailer and YouTube
has a comments section underneath the video in which the other students with in
our class commented about what they thought about our teaser trailer. It was too
late for us to change anything in our teaser trailer at this point but we found it
useful to see where the audience felt our strengths and weakness were.
We had a total of 16 comments on
the video and i will be discussing
the most in depth comments but if
you would like to view all of them I
have attached a link to the video
below.

& Magazine Cover
I do not understand what the person means when they say that we had not layered any music, they could
be saying some parts of the music are too loud and that means that they are not able to individually hear
the sounds because I edited in lots of sounds over each other (as you can see in the picture below) to
make it have more impact on the audience. I can understand the last part of the comment which is
relating to the start of the teaser trailer, I edited the music so it was quieter when the dialogue was going
on but it may not have made as much of a difference as I thought it did.
18. Audience Feedback on the Final Teaser Trailer,
Poster & Magazine Cover
This comment is very complimentary, there only criticism being that magazine cover is dark and this in
turn makes the image hard to see. We wanted to make it clear that it was a thriller-horror and we used
darker colours to try and convey that message. Looking over the magazine that we managed to create i
do find that the house is a little bit hard to distinguish but if there is a strong cross brand identity across
three of our products the audience should be able to spot that it is the house from the other two products
in the background.

The writer of this comment has picked up on the fact that our teaser trailer is in a linear sequence, they
said that a shot ended half way through speech and they are referring to when Chloe is speaking and as
the screen goes to black, i decided to add this in because there was a noticeable jump cut between the
two parts of her speech as we filmed it in two separate parts, we experimented with different effects to
cover it up but ultimately the best decision was to make it go to a black screen after the first sentence. The
sound cutting out was due to the projector not anything to do with our teaser trailer.
