Below is a summary of my findings utilizing a reflective roof coating on an insulated refrigerated
trailer –
ObjectivePer Smithfield Food’s request we tested Eco-Transport Coating, a reflective roof coating
supplied by Eco-Protective Products, LLC of Marietta, GA.
The data used to make my conclusions and recommendations were collected from July 2013
through mid November 2013.
The test was implemented to determine if there were any advantages with applying a reflective
material on the roof of CR England’s reefer trailers.
The tests were conducted in normal operating conditions at the Smithfield Food’s Packing Plant
in Tar Heel, NC
Findings –
Although ambient temperature had little to no effect during testing, our test showed a positive
effect on the coating’s ability to reflect direct sun light and thermal radiation thus reducing
collective heat on the reefer’s roof.
The positive results seems to follow normal off gassing of the insulation and trailer moisture
absorption.
The positive effects should increase starting in the 3rd year of a trailer’s life and peak during the
8th year.
On our older trailers, 8th year of life, compressors saw an increase in run time efficiency from
0.65 to 0.73 hours per one gallon of diesel fuel, a 12.3% increase.
This resulted in a reduced fuel cost of $0.286 per hour of engine run time. This savings sums to a
reduction of $2.79 per day per trailer in operating costs.
2. The average fuel consumption was reduced by 0.78 gallons of fuel per day.
Reduced load power requirements by 12%.
Benchmarks –
Average run time for a yard trailer – 9.78 hours per day
Fuel cost per gallon on 11-20-13 - $3.5715
Average run time on one gallon of fuel, on yard – 0.65 hours
The return or positive effects of a reflective roof coating seems to come into play as the
insulation ages and moisture absorption increases which appears to become an issue in the 3rd
year of a trailer’s life. The coating seems to offset these affects and helps to maintain a level fuel
and load power requirement by reducing heat in the roof.
